If you look at World Soccer's 50 most exciting teenage footballers 2007, At number 5, Giovanni Dos Santos was ranked higher than players like Gareth Bale, Sergio Aguero, Karim Benzema, Di Maria, Toni Kroos, Mesut Ozil, and Alexis Sanchez.
And to make it even more legit - Giovani Dos Santos was a personal favorite of manager Frank Rijkaard who saw his potential and a younger brother and apprentice to the guy who many thought his game was similar to most - Ronaldinho.
But despite all that, today, he’s largely forgotten. So just what happened? Well, Let’s look at the downfall of Giovani Dos Santos.

Talent usually beats hard work, even if talent refuses to work hard. There have been tons of successful players with terrible work ethic (Romario one of them), but untalented players have never been able to play football at a high level. Even an untrained Ronaldinho or fat Ronaldo/Adriano were better than most other attackers in their league.

Being Brazilian and seeing all of the Brazilian players on 0:44 All of them pretty much flopped in Europe (or didn't even hit primetime). Pato and Renato Augusto, to be fair, had their moments in the sun (especially Pato) but injuries derailed their career trajectories. Shoutout to #21 Guilherme who, after floundering in Ukraine and Russia, came back to Brazil and became a hero on Atlético Mineiro (Cruzeiro's main rival) for saving them from elimination in the semis of Libertadores by scoring in minute 95 and then a year later scoring 2 in the quarter-finals of the national cup to come back from a 3-0 deficit.

Both of the Dos Santos brothers, Carlos Vela, and Chicharito have all had pretty successful careers in the grand scheme of things. Just because they never went on to play in the champions league consistently or win league titles, doesn’t mean that they didn’t live up to the hype. They were all fundamental in putting Mexico on the map as a top talent-producing nation in Latin America, and still are considered as the best footballers out of Mexico.

I remember when I was a kid and playing FIFA '09, a Champions League against the Spurs in manager mode. The game ended 2-3 with me playing with Barça as the Victor. But a certain young player had from Spurs had caught my eyes along with Gareth Bale, it was Giovanni Dos Santos.

Giovani Dos Santos is an odd player because he was a complete failure in his club career, but was very successful in his international career with more iconic moments than one would've thought of. Thank you for making these videos on Mexican players, your video on Guillermo Ochoa was very good.

He scored a great goal in the World Cup 2014 against the Netherlands where they almost won. The narration of that goal was iconic from the Mexican commentator who screams: “You finally showed up sweet Jesus, finally Gio you showed up. So many times I’ve asked for you to show up and I only asked for you to give me one moment and you finally showed up. Please forgive me for criticizing you all these years.”

@HomeHairTransplant
@HomeHairTransplant 10 ай бұрын
From what I saw was the issue wasn't so much the partying and lack of discipline (most players appear to have some sort of pressure coping device whether it be drinking, smoking, night life), but more so the same issue many top up and coming players have when trying to consolidate their place in the football world, taking too many touches on the ball during their possessions. It worked well when playing in the youth ranks or when playing on a stacked team like Rijkaard's Barcelona, but when playing against opposition physically on the same level, Dos Santos was mostly shutdown on the club level. When he would go to his national team he fared pretty well with teammates who were able to give him more space to operate and due to purported lower quality of CONCACAF. Even Ronaldinho with all his football wizardry would pass it or shoot it on the first touch occasionally.
