The photos thing was actually a very subtle Moffat-y twist, which I loved. I nearly missed it, too. The Doctor went back in time and took all those photos of Bill's mom, because she didn't have any. It was a lovely little gift, and Moffat didn't hit you over the head with it.

so Nardole is bald right? Paul McGann and William Hartnell wore wigs! so Nardole is the next doctor OMG!!!

I like how Bill is inquisitive and prods the Doctor. She's aware of sci-fi cliches and questions the logic of the show. That's how you make a character relatable to fans. Not Osgood who wears pieces of the Doctor's past outfits and doesn't have much personality otherwise.

The ending was tacked on because Moffat wanted to add continuity for the trailer. The trailer was made separately from this episode, with no original connection, and Moffat stuck it on to the end because, to paraphrase, 'True fans of doctor who, like myself, wanted to see where the trailer fits into the timeline'.

I really thought I would hate Nardole.. but there is a charm in having an adept but downright silly alien as a second companion in the TARDIS. I also thought Bill ticked all the right boxes.. Clara will go down as one of the worst companions ever.

Water-creature-Heather was just standing there in a non-threatening way because she wasn't really a threat.

I was surprised at how much I liked this episode, but then after Clara, the bar was really low. In fact, I was so surprised at how much it didn't suck, I found myself curious what "that cranky guy, Stu" thought.

I think I liked it a little less than you as the plot and pacing were a complete mess. Still not a bad episode and I really like Bill so overall sadly its the best opener we've had in years despite being something like a 6/10. Now that we've opened on something decent lets hope we'll get some damn good episodes later on.
