It wasn’t that long ago that headlights were a no-thought-required feature. All cars had them and no one really paid them much heed unless they failed or were shaped in a particularly ugly manner.
Halogen
Reliably generating light with the limited resources at a car’s disposal was a problem for early automotive engineers.
Tungsten filaments, similar to the kind found in household incandescent light bulbs, were finally settled on as the solution. From the mid-1960s until now these tungsten filaments have been encased in a bubble of halogen gas in order to improve performance and longevity.
For much of their history, tungsten and halogen lamps focused light on the road via a lens that doubled as the headlight’s protective housing; now the two jobs are separate.
High intensity discharge
In high intensity discharge (HID) headlights, such as those used across the Lexus IS range, a mixture of rare metals and gases are heated to produce a bright white glow. HIDs are around two to three times brighter than halogen lamps and their glare can be particularly annoying for other road users. As such, the Australian Design Rules require cars equipped with HIDs to also have a self-levelling mechanism and a headlight washer. The former ensures that the headlights are always aimed towards the ground. The latter minimises the build up of dirt and grime, both of which can divert more light into the eyes of on-coming drivers.
Despite their brighter output, HID lamps require less power to operate. They generally draw about 35 watts and are said to be good for around 2000 hours of use.
LED
Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have come a long way from the simple flashing lights on beige computer cases to being key components in modern cars, phones and televisions.
Whether you realise it or not, they provide most of the lighting used in today’s instrument panels, entertainment head units and car interiors. As well, arrays of these diodes are employed in fog lamps, indicators and brake lights. Car designers love LEDs because their small size allows them to be fashioned into ever thinner and more distinctive shapes.
Although LED headlights currently fall a little short of the brightness achieved by HIDs, they hit maximum brightness within a millionth of a second compared with the half second required by incandescent and halogen lights.
Laser
In the Audi R8 LMX, laser beam is used only as a supplement to the existing LED headlights, activating only when automatic high-beam is being used with the aim to double the range of light compared with LED high-beam - to a full 500 metres.
So, how does it work?
Where many light-emitting diodes (LED) are used within a regular headlight assembly, lasers work in a different fashion. In the R8 LMX there are only four laser diodes each with a diameter of 300 micrometres, or just 0.3 millimeters - talk about tiny! They are wrapped tightly in what Audi calls a “radiation-tight aluminium module.”
Rather than pointing out towards the road like a normal beam, however, they instead are directed in a V-shape to a single point on a mirror, each strand of laser producing a wavelength of 450 nanometers.

Hunter Bowman they are adaptive, so even though the laser are on in both the R8 & the i8, they can adapt accordingly to incoming traffic, unlike the douche that leaves their hibeams on all night... also Merc's new LED headlights in the new E class has the best adaptability in the industry, you should go look it up, they even have anti reflect when it's raining so the lights don't bounce off the wet pavement & blind traffic

I've got halogen in my car and they are awful when oncoming vehicles have HID or LED's, what's worse is when a 4x4 with said lights pulls up behind me in traffic and burns a lasting image on to the back of my eyeball leaving me temporarily blind, also some cars with LED brake lights are just as bad. Gonna have to get me some sunglasses for driving in heavy traffic at night.

$3500 for one when mine had a fault. Bmw asked me to keep the faulty lightsfor research. The clear plastic had very fine crosshatching where yhe eye lips were. Luckily they didn't charge me for repairs, lucky it was a rare fault they had never seen and c wanted to further research or rose i would be out of pocket. The fault wasnt noticable unless you went very close to investigate. I was lucky to have the lights in the first place cause my car was a show room model fully speced out //m 3. Show room cars are always the best to buy as they have rare features on them.

A bit confusing with the mention of distance. On low beams and with hi/low in 1 bulbs the range shouldn't really increase much. Rather for it to be better lit within the same range if aimed/re-aimed properly. High beams could extend the range likely more so with seperate bulbs.

Inflation isn't the problem, Australia being a relatively small population (only about 21 million) and an island means that everything cost a lot more here. Well, that's what we're told anyway, many company's take advantage of this and screw Aussies over with massively inflated prices just because it's expected that they can (Google 'The Australia Tax Rip off'). Still, the fact that it's an island and doesn't border any other countries means that we have no onshore wars, no gun violence and it's a truly beautiful place to live. The positives far out way the negatives in my book.

Not a fair comparison when optics are more important than color and lumens . Case in point a cheap focusable flashlight and it can focus more light further or how about my not cheap mountain bike light that shots 3x further and wider than most cars. See you can NOT use my Mountain bike light on a car due to blinding oncoming traffic , this can be overcome somewhat with a projector optic or smart lights that see oncoming traffic and adjust appropriately. My Reef Aquarium Coral grows Coral best under HiD Metal halide Lighting (same as Xenon) but it does come with unwanted extras like HEAT and Excessive Electrical Wattage but that's 400 watts * 3 not the DOT 35 watts * 2 on cars . With all this said it would have awesome to get same Car with factory projector Halogens and compare that to Aftermarket Higher Wattage Halogens , Xenon (various colors) conversions and LED Conversions using the same optics and I'm pretty sure the best would be the Xenon. I have a feeling my Off Road RZR with a LED light bar (long throw optics) can shine better than that Audi Laser if we are comparing apples to oranges.

um....why? you can adjust angle and power....how often does anyone turn on their highbeams without attracting attention or having somebody pissed off at them. highbeams have different angles and simple bounce back from further away with a higher intensity to make it cover that increased distance. nothing to do with technology...only difference is power consumption/heat produced/and wavelength of light you can make an incandescent bulb out shine a laser light but you wont like the heat.

You're not supposed to run highbeams in the fog mate. The light will just reflect back to you.

I prefer the "photon mega shot ultra power beams" .. same light force as the Borg uses to destroy enemy spacecraft in faraway galaxies. You won't find these bad boys on Ebay or Amazon. You have to know someone like Elon Musk who can travel into the future and get you a pair and have them delivered by drone to your driveway. Next century stuff.

Laser activated with High beam only??? How often do you get to drive with high beams activated in populated areas? Which mean the laser bit is only activated for maybe 10% of the time for an average night time drive!! Unless you live in a rural area or drive on obscure country roads most of the time, that is! Wont bother until they make it standard fitment! In maybe 20 years!
