I love how you use the compression of the sponge to show how much or little force you use as you’re sanding. That visual makes a more powerful statement than simply saying “Im using very little pressure”. Great job.

Bro, Ive been doing headlight restorations through my detail business for 25+ years. Your method cuts my time by OVER 50%..... I used to do 500 to 2500 grit in steps..500, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 hand sanding, then coating or polish (depending on customer preference and budget) Thank you for your vids, you da man bud! That Trizac 3000 pad!!!! Thank you so much, that pad is the $hizzz!!!
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro 7 ай бұрын
Yeah I used to jump from 800 to 1000 to 2500 to normal 3000 then buff out with a regular drill... Took twice as long.. the 3000 trizact is magic and they know it that's why it's so expensive..lol It cuts all those discs in need for them down and doesn't even better job... Hi-Tech.. appreciated I'm glad you like the method it's fast and efficient extremely healthy for the headlight and nothing I've ever done has them over performing they literally work at 110% at night.... Every customer loves it..💯🤓

I am encouraged by your method as dry sanding looks to be more able to "gauge" the material your removing. I wet sand and have done a fair amount of headlights in my local area, however consistency is always a challenge. I will work on learning your method as I want to get the best results for my clients.

I have to try this, I am a mechanic but always loved detailing cars, I have the best buffers , compounds, and a seperate pad for each compound, I did a black 1964 GTO with original paint, no one else would touch it, a 120,000 dollar car it looked like a mirror, but when I buff and wax newer cars they look great then a month later the headlights are foggy, I did try sanding them starting with 320 and progressively getting to 2,000 and using a gloss clear ceramic engine enamel, this did work pretty well they look good for a few years but with all the water sanding and drying time it takes 3 hours, so glad I found this, now I can do it faster and better

Yes..DA would not produce enough speed and heat to gain this kind of clarity...DA's are designed to protect against this.... As always very informative video, I like the explanation on taping heavy around the light and the dust explanation on the p500 and p800. I used 1 of the 3m restoration kits from 2020 i still have to do my 2003 Silverado and 2011 Nissan Rogue i did in 2020. They was not protected and the Rouge was very bad but my Silverado wasn't. They both came out really good but I didn't clearcoat the Rouge cause i didnt have the Meguires clearcoat when finished what can i do to clearcoat it since it's been a couple of weeks apart from doing both of them. I use the Milwaukee M12 drills and did buy the Ac Delco Polisher snd CG polishing compound but not the sanding discs dont know if I want try to do as a business. Have you ever thought of adding each step in chapters so you can find a certain step easier insted of searching for it if you need to watch it again.

Hi, thanks for the how to video. I do have a couple questions if you don’t mind: 1) how do you go about sanding headlights with a tight wedge in the bumper that makes it impossible to reach with 3” round pad on drill? 2) what are your thoughts on Meguiars Plastx lens polish? 3) what are your thoughts on Cerakote lens coating wipes vs. The Meg’s spray coating? Thanks!
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro 7 ай бұрын
You should watch a couple of my videos cuz a lot of the questions you ask our numerous videos.... It's rare that you come into a location that you cannot hit with the 3-inch disc or 3 inch end piece.. and if you did it'd be very small and you would just do it by hand... Maguire's plastic x is one of the lowest levels of plastic polish for headlights out there.. it just doesn't do as much as the other ones it's a very old product... I'm a huge fan of cerakote.... With that being said their wipes are ceramic coating and I feel the ceramic coating has no need or place on headlights it's too thin and it decorates over time very fast but the number one reason for me not agreeing with it is that it is a wipe anything that is a wipe is going to be extremely inefficient and adulterated compared to something with a spray.. it's sitting in a bag with the material with a cloth which has a bunch of fibers and all kind of stuff going on and human touch at it leaves streaks even if you don't see them at first when eroding they come out.. any kind of wipe is going to be inferior to spray... I would only use a wipe in an emergency and I almost would rather wait to the emergency passes to just use a spray... You'll never get this kind of quality with wipe...

Wow so, between the final two steps of polishing with the chemical guys product and the final step of the Meguiar's headlight spray coat you're only using a microfibre towel? I understand of course the polishes you use have benefits with the oils, I'm just surprised that the Meguiar's goes straight on I would have been worried about the oils and stuff, but I guess it's so smooth at that point that the microfiber gets it pretty clean. I would've thought you'd need to use isopropyl or something before the headlight coat. ty as always for your vids man so knowledgeable 🙏🏼👍🏼

Lot of people think this and it just messes up the health of the headlight also the clarity as alcohol still leaves residue behind especially when introduced into something else so it dings your clarity also it dries your headlight out of those beneficial oils which are a thousand percent good for your headlights... I run mine on the high setting the fast setting and I feather the trigger depending on placement and difficulty of light... Meaning I'm brought a flat spots I got it all the way down, on corners and tight spots like better the trigger slower... With that being said I would do what's comfortable for you if you need to slow down or use the slower setting that should be fine keep in mind that I've literally done at this point probably over 2,000 headlights I stop counting over a year ago at 1,000.. so I have my pressure control and everything else down especially wisdom... I was stick to some broad lights and turn it up all the way and see how it feels...

I would go into the bio check the stats on the Ryobi then check the stats on your drill you don't want too much torque and you don't want too much RPM.. there should be around the stats of the reality within reason.... You cannot use the drill for polishing and obtain this level of quality... It's just not going to happen because it's not fast enough... You can do a decent rendition but it won't be this perfect Tim like this you're looking more like out of five or six... Also it would affect your clarity and the transparency..(how good your lights would work) New video... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aqyJhKpl17nbm6s.htmlsi=SsQGBZADstxQenEa

I work on paint with 3m pads at a pro level and have been using them for going on 10+ years now. I will use then until they no longer remove the previous sanding marks. Say you have a 1500# scratch in a 1 inch radius. I work my 3k over that in a 2 inch radius. If I do 3-4 passes with a medium firm pressure and it's no longer leaving a new ring and removing the original scratch I know it's no longer functional and I'm wasting time at that point. Hey, nice video! I noticed in your video description that 3M has discontinued their "Lens & Hard Plastic Cleaner" (39017). Have you found an alternative that works equally well? I compared the MSDS for that to the one for their Rubbing Compound, and the list of ingredients is identical. (The percentages are given as a range, and some of the chemical names aren't exact, so maybe there could still be some slight differences.)

Yeah with those data sheets they're only going to tell you so much by law or else anybody me you the guy up the street can just go ahead and reproduce what they're making and sell it so they have to be able to have trade secrets so what's your actually seeing is just what's mandated for them to show you what's in there and they're not even showing you the correct ratios of things one can have say 1% and the other one can have 50% of the same thing and those numbers mean a huge difference in products especially chemicals... But those two products are cousin products... Made at the same place with the same ingredients with different ratios and some extra stuff added that's not on there to create a unique product that nobody else has that's all those things work.... But I assure you even though with the naked eye they are not identical by far the actual hard lids product as far superior for headlights check these videos out...kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mL5hnciEl5-pmWQ.htmlsi=zeA87HkSXjw9roVa kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9iHf8p6msuuiIk.htmlsi=NVPwSZI-IFEu3FHF kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e7d_ps5qtM6rqnk.htmlsi=n0ya9EhbjXCOPnmI

What about using the green tape then a heavier tape on top of it ? That green tape is crazy expensive and there has to be a better way to protect the paint then using up so much of that green tape
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro 7 ай бұрын
Yes you can actually do that place tape on top of that tape should make no difference what tape you use as long as that is the substrate bonding to the vehicle... I'm actually experimenting with that right now off camera..🤓 Because of these hard ass lights I keep doing having to do excessive sanding and want something a lot stronger that cannot possibly be put on the paint.. Good thinking..👍🏽

@@theheadlightrestorationpro I actually bought Scotch Pink Delicate tape then I’ve been using 2 layers of regular blue painters tape from walmart but even all that no matter how careful I am I’m still going off the headlight and hitting the paint. I also thought of using the pink tape then 1 layer of duck tape as long as it doesn’t get on the paint and duck tape is kinda cheap. I just email a company called T-Rex tape it’s suppose to be unbelievably thick. I’m also thinking about switching over to the ryobi 3/8 drill the torque is so low that not even the Ryobi website says how much it has
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro 7 ай бұрын
@grandmastert01 yeah the 3/8 is very weak...and yes I've been experimenting with the addition tape on top for those heavy grinding jobs and have been trying duck tape...( Gorilla)...still very experimental ... But yes no matter what process you use even hand and wet sanding you will hit the outer edges ...

@@theheadlightrestorationpro … I’m finding myself having to take the interface pad and the 3m disk off the drill a lot to get into all the different angles that a lot of these headlights have but where I get myself into trouble is when I don’t and use the drill that’s when the drill catches and hits the paint but for the most part in using the drill

I disagree that this is the pro's method. The UV coating you applied guarantees 1 year of protection. Sanding with lower grit and using 2K clear coat gives way better protection that lasts much much longer.

It happens from permanent damage from people not getting their headlights restored in a timely... Like letting their headlights be bad for 4 years then getting headlight... The sun permanently damages the molecules of the polycarbonate.. that and an accumulation of people rubbing shit on their...🤣😂😂 Trying home remedies and things like...

1$ store tape... where its' 1$ /roll. :-) Beyond that... Your 'example' car is so messed that taping is mostly Pointless. Please STOP TALKING ! Note that Sanding removes the thickness of the plastic. There are only a Limited number of 'sandings' possible before the lens is ruined.
