Healing Arborvitae tree, from brown to green again (hopefully)

Healing an Emerald Green Arborvitae. We planted 8 of them. Three turned brown and died and another had one foot in the grave. Our process, which wasn’t fully planned out, seems to be working on this one. We have an in-ground sprinkler system that gets one side but the other side wasn’t getting much water, so we added a drip system to the other side and started using HB-101 the last two months or so from a spray bottle about every 7-10 days. I also removed as much of the small, dead branches that I could, which took about 30-40 minutes.
Check back for an update in about a month...or three.

I planted two about 2 months ago and watered them every other day, and they were fine. Now (November) they starting to turn yellow inside and the bottom. Do they still need watering in the cold season, and how much? I don't know if I overwater or underwater them, the soil feels a little wet, but not soggy or mushy.

As I’m far from being an expert, I’d consult with an arborist or research online if you’re able. There seems to be varying degrees of info. I still never could find a solid answer on leaving the burlap on or removing entirely. I chose to remove entirely for this row. I do know that for ours we needed to water more than we initially did so added a drip system to soak the roots along with sprinkler system. Being in the Pacific NW, we don’t water in the winter. Your area my differ. I hope you’re able to resolve the issue.

That’s 100% normal. They will turn brown a fair bit in the autumn and then fall off. Your cedar will look maybe 50% less full going into the winter but then after some good watering in Spring it’ll be solid green and full of new growth.

I think that when you overwater then, the root ball begins to drown. Yelling or browning means you are overwatering. Let them be without water for a few days at a time maybe go a full week.

So, I overwatered after planting two of these and they have started to turn brown on the bottom. You're saying it's okay to trim all the dead "branches" out? I'm terrified! The good thing is it's fall and they will start going into dormancy. Thank you.

I know that worked for us. Took my time to trim all the brown branches out plus consistent watering and HB-101 use.

I planted 11 of these last 2017 and so far they've only grown a foot in height and the leaves are thin that you can see the stem on most of them. They get full sun . Any idea how to make them grow faster? I'm here in Illinois. thanks in advance!

Hey there. I’m far from an expert on growing Arborvitaes but I do know what is working for us so far; we added a drip irrigation system, we trim any of the brown branches/stems (you really have to take your time on that one) and spray with HB-101 as per their instructions. We didn’t do that and lost two plants that we replaced before adding the drip system. There is also debate on whether to leave burlap on or remove it entirely from the root ball when planting. I prefer to remove, myself in order to promote the plant’s roots to go where they’d like naturally without impeding them. You’ll see many arguments for or against depending on where you search. Hope that helps a little.
