Health and Medical Terminology in British Sign Language (BSL)

Learn health and medical vocabulary in British Sign Language.
The location of some signs can also give information about the location, for example "cut". Wherever the cut is on the body, perform the sign at that location.
With the sign for "pain", add facial expressions to indicate severity. A grimace at the same time as signing "pain" would indicate a lot of pain. These non-manual features (NMF) of BSL add to the meaning significantly.

Thank you for this. I work in a hospital and im sure the ward staff will find this interesting. Other signs like, house keeper or catering would be handy. There's so many different staff going in and out the rooms

Thank you for making such clear and helpful videos! I’m trying to learn a little bit of sign language because a deaf patient has come to our ward for treatment and I want to be able to communicate better with them (medical student) - I’m hoping when I go in tomorrow I’ll be able to use some of these ☺️

Watched this to pick up some disability-related vocabulary. Going to be attending a BSL course this year as part of my disability activism / arts work. Your presentation is really clear, though just as some folk need subtitles to help, I'd like a voice saying the word so that I can focus on looking at the signs, not reading the labels. Definitely the clearest learn-to-sign videos I've come across!

Thank you ,my autistic soon know some makaton signs, but has difficulty expressing his pain or sickness,which is very important,I will practice hard and hopefully he will be able to show me, I am reading his mind but it is not enough ,

Hi Dan, Love the channel, the way you explain the sign, hand movements, and, NMFs is great! I'm a Paramedic and just completed my Level 1. Do you know if there is a sign for 'Paramedic'? I'm happy to fingerspell, but it's a long word and wonder if you could combine 'ambulance' and 'nurse', or 'P' and 'Medical'... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hiya, I was just wondering what part of the UK you come from. I remember hearing somewhere that signs are slightly different in some parts of the country so I wanted to check. Hope that’s okay! Great videos by the way- I’m using them to brush up!

Hi, thanks for watching! We're based in the East Midlands, but do try and present signs which are commonly used from all over the UK. However, with regional differences you may encounter slightly different signs depending on your location. You may encounter some signs are used interchangeably, for example "medical" in this video is also used for "doctor" in some parts of the country. Thanks again for watching! ✋

I believe they are the same as how are you the sign was used to ask 'are you healthy?' in the past and has modernised to be seen as a greeting in later years. I found the history behind a lot of the signs very interesting so hope this is helpful.

Is there a difference to 'how are you' and 'health', both look the same. Is this another example where mouthing the words are important?

Does it matter which hand we use to sign? Meaning... is there a difference between left handed and right handed people signing?

Good question! Try to use your dominant hand for all one handed signs and the prominent movement in two handed signs. It's really important not to switch between your left and right hand, as it can get confusing. The analogy of a pen and paper helps some people, so your dominant hand is the pen and your non-dominant hand is the paper.

I'm here to say that the term "Asperger's syndrome" is no longer an official diagnosis and those who may previously have been diagnosed with Asperger's are now diagnosed with Autism/Autism Spectrum Disorder We on the spectrum can present in a variety of different ways and all have different support needs, but we're all autistic and we're all important
