You should really try elderberry-soup. It's a thing we used to do a lot here in Denmark during the cold months. It's basically juice mixed with water and thickened with maize/corn-flour just like you'd thicken a gravy. Serve immediately with dried (crumbled) bread (in Denmark the bread is called tvebakker...and the soup "hyldebærsuppe".... It's amazing.

An ancient favorite in my homeland Hungary 🇭🇺 It has been a part of our culture for over a thousand years! Give a kid the choice between Coke or elderberry juice, they'll grab the elderberry 9 times out of 10! I recommend translating the Hungarian recipe and giving it a try. The Hungarian name for elderberry juice is "bodzaszörp". This will make a concentrate that you add 6 or 7X water (or soda water) to and has a shelf life of several years! BTW, it's the white flowers you use, not the berries. Enjoy!!

I have a little piece of wilderness at the bottom of my garden. There was just one elderberry tree when I moved in. I cut everything around it. 2 years later theres another three in the back 1 one in the front garden. They are called the Goddess plant. I personally dont like to prune them at all. The flowers: I make elderflower cordial sometimes with rhubarb. It keeps my grand babies hayfever at bay. The berries need to be cooked always. Useful for all the things mentioned including if you suffer from low iron/anemia. I dry my berries and store them in the freezer. Steep them in a teapot in hot water and drink hot, or you can cool it add ice and honey with some crushed mint leaves for a lovely drink

A few months ago, I ordered some Elderberry cuttings from the River Hills Harvest in Missouri. They've been growing Elderberries there for over 30 years. I've been using their products for almost a year and am very impressed with their quality. There's so much nutrition in the Elderberry that sometimes it's been called Nature's Medicine Chest. It's interesting that people in America are finally learning about plants the Europeans have been using for centuries.

But, you never mentioned Elderberry wine....it is the bomb! We make 6 to 10 gallons every year with the common canadensis variety (ditch weed). I give it away to friends, especially during flu season, and they demand more, after it is all gone. The taste is earthy fruit, as if Mother Nature sucked minerals directly from the dirt to the fruit. We are trying Bob Gordon and Johns varieties this year for larger berries. Does anyone have an experienced review on these? Thanks for the primer video!

I have wanted elderberries for a few years, but just couldn't justify the costs when so many trees and plants we have bought died in our awful soil. Well, God saw fit to give me 30 bushes this year via birds. Lol. Evidently birds ate the wild ones we have growing along the highway and pooped out the seeds under our oak tree, because we had all these plants sprouting up this year. I told my hubby to leave them alone so we could see what they were (I love volunteer plants). When they grew and flowered I did a search and they are indeed elderberry. 30 of them so far. I'm gonna leave alone and let them continue to grow and multiply. We have a LARGE extended family so having a ton of elderberries for syrup will be wonderful. They are also in an area where we don't have anything but a swing and they provide more shade for my chickens in this horrible hot weather.

Do deer eat the heck out of elderberry’s? I have so much deer around my place that it’s nearly impossible to grow anything unless inside a 6’ tall fence. Anything under 6’ they’ll jump over easily and destroy. I harvest roughly 9-12 deer per season and still don’t make a dent. In December/January here in NC, my elderberry plants go dormant. I cut them down to the ground, leaving just 3 or 4 inches of the plant sticking up from the ground. In April/May, they start growing back and by the end of May to early June, the plants reach 10 or more feet tall. I do this primarily to get as large a harvest of berries as possible, and as close to the same time to make the harvest more efficient. I've been growing elderberry plants on my small farm for about 3 or 4 years now. I started with 350 plants from cuttings - I've now got roughly 700 plants in place in about a 3/4 acre field. I grow 4 cultivars of American Elderberry (Adams 2, Bob Gordan, Ranch and Pocahontas), and established the 2nd set of 350 plants with cuttings from the first set. As I pruned the plants, I made cuttings from the stems and stuck them directly into the ground in the new field. As long as the ground isn't frozen solid, you can plant elderberry cuttings. After I established my 2nd field, I sold the excess cuttings on Etsy. Your cuttings need to have 2 sets of nodes (buds where you would expect to see new side branches sprout from). Two nodes go beneath the surface of the ground, and two go above. You want to plant your cuttings about 3 or 4 inches deep. For the first year, you must make sure that you don't let the plants dry out. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. If you have 1-1/2 inches of rain weekly, you don't need to water the plants. Elderberry plants like mildly acidic soil, but they are not as picky about it as blueberries are. A soil test will tell you what you need to add to your soil. You can specify that you are growing blackberries, as that is a common selection on county extension soil tests and elderberry plants do well in the same soil conditions as blackberries. For the first year, you need to keep the weed pressure down by using either mulch or weed fabric to control the weeds. Once the elderberry plants develop an established root system, they will out compete the weeds. The first year, my plants got to be about 2 or 3 feet tall. The second year they reached 10+ feet tall and produced a substantial amount of berries. If your plants aren't thriving, start with getting a soil test done. Once you have adjusted the soil based on the test, you can try pruning the plant to the ground when it goes dormant (usually Dec/Jan timeframe). Take care and God Bless.

@@theElderberryFarmer Thank you for your detailed response. I will do the soil test as soon as I can. I did buy two more saplings locally, and one of my 2 remaining Elders finally got flowers after 3 years of nothing. Both saplings died, but my one is still producing blooms, some of which are reddening now. I didn't know that I needed more than one species for pollination (thought I had it covered with all the pollinators that are welcomed here).

Hello I purchased a cold pressed elderberry juice from the store counter. Within 15 MIN OF drinking it I got bad diarrhea. An hour later I started vomiting. I went to the e.r thinking I got an infection never once might of thought it was the elderberry cold pressed. The doctors did blood work and CT scan and found nothing. How long will these effects last?

They do not have to be the same type but if you are making a syrup or eating them, they need to be from the Sambucas family for the best health benefits.

scientific sources for all this medical advice? .... I was gifted some elderberry seedlings going to put them in the ground soon. Planting is fun, but unless at a farm scale, it's very heard to make a net energy or resource gain from small plantings. It's a good skill to have though.

Are the elderberry plants; leaves stems, berries, etc.poisonous to dogs or cats? We have 2 sometimes 3 dogs on our property, and one cat. I would like to have a couple elderberry bushes but don't want to risk, getting our pets, or their "cousins" (our son's dog) sick.

It was information you provided because I was unfamiliar with what you were talking about. I thanked you for the information. How dare you call me arrogant for not responding exactly how you wanted me to. You do not know me. Typing a few words on a screen, not getting your desired response, and then leveling an accusation against someone is not the proper way to communicate with people.

Ah, I understand. No problem. It is very hard to understand the written word unless it is a long detailed explanation. I have watched Justin Rhodes before and have seen videos from others who have volunteered for him. Yes, I do think his personality is not the greatest. That would not be my reason to dismiss his program. I watched the video but just do not have time to do anything extra for my channel at this time. I am swamped with family and other obligations. I am about to hit 100k next week hopefully and that is just a big blessing. I am happy to have what I have. Cheers.
