I had waisted fruits because I have been afraid if that is the plant, eventhough something in my heart told me to let it grow in the back of my backyard. This year after cutting it from one side to let my other plants some sunlight, I am determent to try the fruit.

@@nickliovich they will send a shoot outside of the box but mostly they stay within. It is a large box, 1 foot tall and about 16 feet long to accommodate 4 elderberry bushes.

YUM We don't eat refined sugar. Just honey or natural fruit juice, or syrup. Do you have to use something to thicken it? Organic cornstarch, or is there any other option?

I throw on the winter duck straw from the coop each spring, that's it.

Late May/early June the white flowers blossom here in Bulgaria. I make several bottles of elderflower syrup to use as a drinks mixer. Not tried the berries but imagine they have a similar flavour to blackcurrants which we grow and make jam with.

It is fine to eat a few apple seeds, I don’t disagree. However, not all plants are appropriate for consumption after the fall and sun entered into the world. You don’t ingest marijuana for this reason.

Please please please, give me that study, not youtube video, but study, real study by university or something else.

I’ve never tried it in pots so I cannot say for sure. They do get very big.

They work well in pots but they need to have enough room. After a year or 2 they will need to be planted in the ground or you can do what we do. We do a heavy trim and then propagate the larger cuttings and make more,

I have wanted elderberries for a few years, but just couldn't justify the costs when so many trees and plants we have bought died in our awful soil. Well, God saw fit to give me 30 bushes this year via birds. Lol. Evidently birds ate the wild ones we have growing along the highway and pooped out the seeds under our oak tree, because we had all these plants sprouting up this year. I told my hubby to leave them alone so we could see what they were (I love volunteer plants). When they grew and flowered I did a search and they are indeed elderberry. 30 of them so far. I'm gonna leave alone and let them continue to grow and multiply. We have a LARGE extended family so having a ton of elderberries for syrup will be wonderful. They are also in an area where we don't have anything but a swing and they provide more shade for my chickens in this horrible hot weather.

Another good place to get your cuttings is from River Hills Harvest in Missouri. Also dried elderberries, elderberry syrup, elderberry jam and more. The owner, Terry Durham, is the biggest elderberry grower in the States, possibly even the world.

Not that I know of. They don't bother mine. We have a decent amount of deer but not as many as y'all.

Not sure I have any tips. I just put two in the ground and I have to trim them back because they have almost become invasive.

In December/January here in NC, my elderberry plants go dormant. I cut them down to the ground, leaving just 3 or 4 inches of the plant sticking up from the ground. In April/May, they start growing back and by the end of May to early June, the plants reach 10 or more feet tall. I do this primarily to get as large a harvest of berries as possible, and as close to the same time to make the harvest more efficient. I've been growing elderberry plants on my small farm for about 3 or 4 years now. I started with 350 plants from cuttings - I've now got roughly 700 plants in place in about a 3/4 acre field. I grow 4 cultivars of American Elderberry (Adams 2, Bob Gordan, Ranch and Pocahontas), and established the 2nd set of 350 plants with cuttings from the first set. As I pruned the plants, I made cuttings from the stems and stuck them directly into the ground in the new field. As long as the ground isn't frozen solid, you can plant elderberry cuttings. After I established my 2nd field, I sold the excess cuttings on Etsy. Your cuttings need to have 2 sets of nodes (buds where you would expect to see new side branches sprout from). Two nodes go beneath the surface of the ground, and two go above. You want to plant your cuttings about 3 or 4 inches deep. For the first year, you must make sure that you don't let the plants dry out. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. If you have 1-1/2 inches of rain weekly, you don't need to water the plants. Elderberry plants like mildly acidic soil, but they are not as picky about it as blueberries are. A soil test will tell you what you need to add to your soil. You can specify that you are growing blackberries, as that is a common selection on county extension soil tests and elderberry plants do well in the same soil conditions as blackberries. For the first year, you need to keep the weed pressure down by using either mulch or weed fabric to control the weeds. Once the elderberry plants develop an established root system, they will out compete the weeds. The first year, my plants got to be about 2 or 3 feet tall. The second year they reached 10+ feet tall and produced a substantial amount of berries. If your plants aren't thriving, start with getting a soil test done. Once you have adjusted the soil based on the test, you can try pruning the plant to the ground when it goes dormant (usually Dec/Jan timeframe). Take care and God Bless.

@@theElderberryFarmer Thank you for your detailed response. I will do the soil test as soon as I can. I did buy two more saplings locally, and one of my 2 remaining Elders finally got flowers after 3 years of nothing. Both saplings died, but my one is still producing blooms, some of which are reddening now. I didn't know that I needed more than one species for pollination (thought I had it covered with all the pollinators that are welcomed here).

They like a well draining neutral soil.

The cage has not hampered the growth of the plant.

Not sure about per head, but I make elderberry syrup with 1c water to 1oz dried (~1/4c fresh) berries

They do not have to be the same type but if you are making a syrup or eating them, they need to be from the Sambucas family for the best health benefits.

I am unfamiliar with the wild elderberries. We have cultivated elderberries that are of the Sambucus nigra strains.

That would not be my reason to dismiss his program. I watched the video but just do not have time to do anything extra for my channel at this time. I am swamped with family and other obligations.
