Dimebag Darrell of Pantera was a truly extraordinary guitarist. And his legacy, even today, 18 years after he was forced to leave this world, makes him absolutely irreplaceable for the world of Metal.
So in the light of the latest Pantera tribute shows, in which I just wanted to point out that in my opinion both Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante are doing an amazing job, let's take a look at some of the isolated guitar parts for Pantera and just remind ourselves how insane of a guitar player Dimebag Darrell actually was... Spoiler: WOW!
We will take a look at such songs:
Pantera - F*$king Hostile
Pantera - Walk (x2)
Pantera - I'm Broken
Pantera - Rise
Pantera - 5 Minutes Alone
Pantera - Mouth For War
And which is your favourite Dimebag Darrell guitar solo? Please let us know in the comments!
00:00 - Intro
00:32 - Let's hear it!
03:03 - What we DON'T hear
04:02 - Zakk's rendition

@@robertbignar9129 Yeah the TGSTK Era was one of the darkest period in Pantera's existence with Phil's back problems, heroine addiction and him distancing himself from the rest of the band (The vocals and the rest of instruments were recorded in two different studios) and that's why the album came out so dark and depressing. DO REX DO REX DO REX!!!! Zac and Charlie are KILLING IT! I want to go see this show so bad. Pantera was regularly doing week long stays at a local metal club we had here in my town in the 80s. This was not only the "Glam era" but the covers era, too. Just imagine Pantera playing Van Halen, Jump. 😳 Well, they did and it was amazing. When they came to town. That club would be packed all week that they were there. And it was a huge club. Built from a warehouse. All of the local metal musicians would go to check them out. Everyone was a fan. Even back then, Dime, well he was Diamond then, was a mind blowing guitarist. And they all were the nicest guys. Phil gave me the best touring advice when I asked him his opinion. And it helped me make the right decision.

No one can replace Dime, but I think Zakk is the only one qualified for the job of filling in, and he's killing it so far! It's actually really cool to hear the bits where he embellishes a bit, trading the signature Dime squeals for the signature Zakk pinch harmonics. I think that's a testament to how great both of these guys are, in that no one can match Dimes sound and style, but it still sounds like Pantera when Zakk is playing, even though it also still sounds like Zakk, if that makes sense, lol. Kinda makes you wonder what a new Pantera album would sound like with Zakk and Charlie behind the wheel...

They're doing fucking excellent! Phil sounds like phenomenal (of course, why would he not, even in the 96' 'Official Live' era when he was suffering with pain and addiction. Rex Brown is the only original (a true CFH alongside Phil). Charlie and Zakk have both dedicated their trade for this opportunity (and they're the f*c*i*g best at it)come to the UK in the not so distant future! Vinnie and Dime are CFH! (Rest In Peace) Onto the topic of Dimebag, he is my all time favourite guitarist, I have a CFH tattoo with R.I.P 1966-2004. Been listening since yr 7, picked up guitar 18 years ago ( since 2004) the year that bastard took Dimebag) and I've took a lot of influence from Dimebag in my playing style, but all my guitars have tune-omatic so I can't get the whammy dives/squeals. I know this is late, but I see Dimebag, I click! One of the rarities that unfortunately didn't last and had his time left taken, way too soon. I wish Dime was here so I could personally thank him, I nearly gave up guitar a few times in my life, it was my Pantera albums that got me flared up and playing again, just listening to those Chainsaw Randall's and that insanely untouchable riffing and insanely godlike blues-esque shredding. R.IP Darrell Lance 'Dimebag' Abbott - August 20th, 1966 - December 8th, 2004 RIP Vincent 'Vinnie' Paul Abbott - March 11th, 1964 - June 22nd, 2018.

You can hear in "Demon by driven" that there are many guitars, when the drum and bass join the main riff, then you can hear at least 2 more guitars. Incredibly good rhythm and solo guitarist. He had crazy ideas for 2 or more guitars, both for rhythm and solo. Pantera literally saved Metal in the early 90s. There was a poster in that issue of Guitar World, Dime was still Diamond Darrell back then. R.I.P. Dime and Vinnie..

Dime was awesome. Got to see them during the Far Beyond Driven tour. Would love to see a Rex Brown episode as well. He really held it down while Dime did all the lead stuff. Had amazing tone that really stood out on the Pantera albums.

You only have to hear Rex isolated on 'Cemetery Gates' to have a sudden realisation that Rex is a legend amongst legends.

Dime still awesome guitar player. Right now I learn "Floods" solo, one of my favorite. It's hard to name a favorite solo, he doesn't have bad solos, even in the first 5 "demo" albums, for example solo from "We will meet again" is awesome.

Dimebag was so great! I’m still in shock that he was so brutally murdered on stage. I met Vinnie in Vegas where I worked and he was such a cool person. I’ll bet Dimebag was just like him? I saw them open for Black Sabbath. They were so amazingly great! Hearing Pantera gives me mixed feelings of joy and profound sadness. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Not many mention one of my favorite songs as far as PANTERA and Dimebag’s guitar playing throughout the song - especially the main riff and the breakdown, which is “Where You Come From.” The song was among two bonus tracks from their 101 Proof live album.

I couldn't believe 1 guitar could sound like that the first time my friend told about this band called Pantera. I honestly couldn't believe much of what was coming in through my ears. To this day, no guitar player has been as rhythmic and jammy as Dimebag!

Never missed a note by DEMONS BE DRIVEN the sleep solos always hit me in my soul the way he expressed him self also his subtle ues of the floyd were hand vibrato just wouldn't due that guitar was literally crying on your shoulder and let's not forget REX on the BASS carrying dime through the whole solo with his awesome Bass lines talk about two souls becoming one and crying together to express that whole vibe from a musical perspective between two musicians was like two lighting bolts striking the ground at the same time not to mention at the time it was just different it was a perfect balance between thrash metal and hard rock at the same time even the way Dime solos were played was different from everyone else's solos I think you should isolate the two on this track to show how well the two worked together musically that bass line was awesome. lord how we miss him we seemed like brothers talked for hours last month about what we want to be I sit now with his hand in mine but I know he can't feel, NO ONE KNOWS WHATS DONE IS DONE IT'S AS IF HE WERE DEAD. GOD I miss him so much I felt the person he was with out ever physically meeting him through the cemetery gates solo I met the real Dime his personality heart and soul may he and Vinnie Paul Rest in peace they are sorely missed by the world 🌎 🙏

Def. some parts I missed in the mix that sound amazing isolated. Also made me think that Dime was also a bit of a Schenker fan in the way he uses some of his licks and the double stop bends. A player who had it all though. He had groove and riffs and incredible leads.

to me what is really sad is te fact that Rex Brown is soooo underrated, not only for his technical abilities but as you mention it for the symbiosis between him and Dime, and thats the whole thing with Pantera that so many people dont get, Pantera is for me one of the very best band of metal because of that symbiosis between all the members, they are all excellent and no one draw too much space in the music, you can definetly hear Dime's killer riffs, Rex behind and completing the riff ( and holy hell he is good, following Dime on these crazy riffs is not an easy task) Vince blasting the shit off these drums, and lets not not forget the incredible voice of Phil. and thats Pantera, 4 talented peoples, doing their shit together and in a perfect balance, as all things should be PS: sorry for broken english, not my first language

Ending of Floods made me think of coming home from a night out and playing guitar under a corrugated patio cover on the side of a barn, at a picnic table while the rain comes down and makes sweeping patterns across the lake, and I don’t even play guitar!

There is one thing that is truly irreplaceable: STYLE. Dimebag had style for miles. The way he was moving is hands, his thumb in the center of the back of the neck while soloing. This is what makes timeless guitarists IMO. Just like Marty Friedman and his super peculiar picking hand position.

They kept it super simple after his chain, just maybe a tiny bit more EQ de-noising (he had a noise gate in his chain anyway, but I own one of those units and it isn't like exactly like this in the mixer). Absolute love how dry he is in the mix (although I think the isolation could be doing something) and immediately how much low-end information is filled out as soon as Rex and Vinnie come in. You really hear the Van Halen worship when you hear how they mix.
