Nicko McBrain is not only one of the most beloved drummers in the world of Heavy Metal but he also is a true heart and soul of Iron Maiden.
So in honor of Nicko's birthday which is today
let's take a look at some of the isolated drum parts performed by Nicko McBrain in the video which hopefully will become the first in the series of several, for now looking specifically at some of the Iron Maiden songs from The Golden Era of the 1980s.
We will take a look at such songs from the albums Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son:
Iron Maiden - The Trooper
Iron Maiden - Flight of Icarus
Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Iron Maiden - 2 Minutes to Midnight
Iron Maiden - Caught Somewhere in Time
Iron Maiden - Alexander the Great
Iron Maiden - The Clairvoyant
Iron Maiden - Can I Play With Madness
00:00 - Intro
00:31 - Let's hear it
03:44 - No need to know the song
04:51 - But he changed...
05:37 - Happy Birthday, Nicko

Legend says Steve asked Nicko to invent a drum solo as the intro of the song, he then spent half a day creating a 25 second drum solo. Steve then said he meant short and snappy, Nicko was like "oh", and the result is audible on the record.

Once I was assigned to participate to a tribute for Iron Maiden. I picked the song 'Powerslave' cos' it is one of the songs which I remember my self air-drumming to it. Before starting meeting with the boys to rehearse the songs, I found a the isolated drumtrack of the Powerslave in KZfaq. Then I realized that what I used to hear on the album version was half of what NMB actually plays. It was like having Bohman, Paice and Downey in one person but being a part of each riff. Bearing in mind that Nicko was playing in a most uncomfortable drum set-up (sitting too low, all toms and cymbals elevated above head height and with almost 30° tilted inwards snare, I came to the conclusion that this drummer is more than incredible. He is a legend. Of course, I've spend twice the time rehearsing the song since what I knew was half of what he was actually playing, having hard time to maintain that groove with all ghost notes, steady and fast foot work and hi hat opening on up-beats. NMB should be awarded to the top ranks and not due to Iron Maiden's success.

Maiden were last supposed to tour Australia a few years back and we had our tickets purchased but the band had to pull out due to covid which had just hit the world at that time. I'm a guitarist and Nicko's work is what made me love drums, and I'm dreaming of learning to play one day (too little time and money though xD). His playing just always had the melody. Btw. Always good to remember his work with Pat Travers Band. And I think it's a real challenge to make drums sound so musical and fluid while keeping the rhythm perfectly. Plus think about all of the small things he incorporates aside for setting the pace and mood. I mean, there was a piece of wood during ROTAM which simulated the creaking of the deck, the Japanese drums on Senjutsu, the gong played with a bow to make you hear the R101 crash in EOTC... And I think Adrian once said that Nicko is an amazing funk drummer, which he unfortunately cannot show in Maiden. Hope he lives long and continues to love what he's doing.

I love listening to his performances on all the live albums as well. His parts are so well composed and performed with such panache that it even the most complicated parts sound simple. It’s like it takes no effort. I think listening to a song like Hallowed Be Thy Name is a great example of how he took Clive’s parts and recreated them to his own style. Each part is much more nuanced and meticulously crafted which ultimately fits the song better. I can’t say enough about the amazing sense of rhythm he brings to their sound. By far one of my favorite drummers in any genre. Happy birthday Nicko!!!

I agree with almost everything you said in this video. And I say "almost everything" because, honestly, I don't agree with the idea that you can instantly detect any Iron Maiden song just by listening to Nicko's drums. That NEVER happened to me with Nicko (and I'm not referring to the curler in the intro of Where Eagles Dare, please), but it did (and happens) to me with Clive Burr. Sometimes, I think that the time Nicko has been in the band makes people get used to his sound and believe that he is the best drummer the band ever had, something that I always doubt. When Clive was there, no one asked to be changed. His sound was powerful, aggressive, fast, it was versatile and innovative, in addition to being rhythmic to the core. It was the most unnecessary change in the band's history, but Nicko replaced him very well, which is why the change went unnoticed. That is to say, for me they are on the same level, although Nicko cannot play almost any song from the Clive era in a satisfactory way for me. Some songs seem completely different with the amount of unnecessary changes in rhythm and meter that he made to them, such as The Prisoner, 22 Acacia Avenue, Sanctuary, etc. Otherwise, for me he is a beast of a drummer and everything he recorded in the studio with Maiden is solid and I love it. Greetings and happy birthday to Nicko!

Yeah it's really impressive. I can fit the guitar to the song easily which means it must make it much easier for Maiden to play along with the drums. Melody is one of the things that has disappeared from so many modern songs. One thing I like about Maiden is that no matter the subject matter and how dark it is, there is always something upbeat in there that suggests the possibility of hope and/or redemption.
