Wow, a video that's actually accurate for once. Most of these shorts are just spreading misinformation. Yes, everything you said is important to consider when diagnosing someone with autism, such as duration of symptoms and how those symptoms impact someone's life. Different people on the spectrum can have vastly different support needs because shocker, they are human beings, and not everyone presents the same or has the capabilities as others. I completely agree with you. ❤

I have been asked what autism is and what it's like to have it. It's hard to describe because I don't know what it's like NOT to have it. All I can give you is some possibly relatable social and sensory struggles I go through on a daily basis. I don't get people denying my claim so much as questioning their life and whether they might be neurodivergent themselves. My typical response is if you're doing well don't worry about it but if you are struggling and think you may need help then seek it out. The diagnosis may change nothing but it may also help you find resources and techniques for dealing with some of the things you're struggling with. The thing that helped me the most was simply meeting other people on the spectrum back in college. It helped me get a better grasp on which of my traits were just me and what was probably related to my diagnosis. We don't really talk much anymore as a group but I hope they are all doing well.

It makes a lot of sense. For some people (especially late diagnosed) that understanding and validation could potentially be life saving. I know in many ways it was for me.

Why are you seeking validation from the internet? I don't think that could possibly be helpful.

i think people generally make content about their experiences to connect with others who relate/educate/etc

And where are the support networks for autistic people primarily based? Oh yes, online. There is a woeful lack of understanding around autism so anyone spreading accurate information and trying to break down the misconceptions is great. When I told my daughter's nursery she was being referred for an autism assessment I was immediately met with "oh but we think she's great" or "we don't think there's anything wrong". I didn't say she wasn't great or that anything was wrong with her just that she seems to think differently to most children her age and the docs, psychologists and psychiatrists agreed. I love these kind of vids, she isn't presenting herself as a victim, she is actively saying she isn't one but that her challenges are different and affect her differently than most people. That isn't seeking validation, that's just sharing experiences so others can hopefully either identify with them or learn from them. Validation came when she was diagnosed.
