The one Van Halen concert I went to had to be the single worst concert I have ever been too. DLR came down from the ceiling on the surfboard at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium and he was so drunk/high he fell off the surfboard on to the stage. When he fell, he busted the mic and tried to sing for a few minute before a stage hand ran up and forced him to switch mics. DLR slurred and mumbled through two songs before nearly everybody left.

@@silentrage5425 he did that at several shows, sadly. Out of the three times I saw VH with DLR he was only good once (1983 tour), did mostly babbling on the 1984 tour and absolutely horrible on the Fair Warning tour. I saw this tour in '84. It was their last tour with DLR. I can tell you the energy level at a Van Halen concert back then was off the charts! Bands didn't like opening for them because nobody wanted to see them. They wanted to see VH. I was actually lucky because I won my tickets on a radio contest. Guys after him tried to be like him and use his techniques, to this day. Listen to Clapton amd hendrix, honestly. Nowhere near the amount of energy speed or creativity. For their time maybe, the guys for last 40 years have been trying to do what Eddie Van Halen was doing for decades now. Its what modern guitar players mimic. I know there is quite an argument about which version of Van Halen was the best, with David Lee Roth or with Sammy Hagar. @@mattheweudy2396 ha ha. I had stopped buying their albums by the late 80’s so there was no divisive stuff for me. But Van Halen was a band I liked as a kid and teenager in early to mid 80’s at school. I liked my rock more edgey and raw and Van Halen were almost too clean and polished by then that maybe why I drifted away from them and were into other bands more. But this period of Van Halen was when I loved their sound the most.

This particular song was from the last album to feature David Lee Roth as the lead singer. After Roth left to pursue a solo career, he would be replaced by Sammy Hagar. Some of those with him singing feature "When It's Love" and "Why Can't This Be Love?". If you want some more with Diamond Dave, I would recommend "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love", "Running With the Devil" and "Jump", just to name a few. One interesting contribution that lead guitarist Eddie Van Halen made to someone else's project was to Michael Jackson's "Beat It", where he plays an epic guitar solo.

In 1978 a couple band-mates and I were on the way to a gig. The guy driving started talking about a tune he'd heard earlier that day...a cover of an old Kinks tune called 'You Really Got Me' with this wild-ass-sounding guitar player. Within minutes the tune comes on the radio - WRIF outta Detroit. My friend yells "THIS IS IT", THIS IS IT...LISTEN TO THIS SHIT" and pulls into a parking lot. We stared at each other barely believing what we were hearing. In those few minutes we witnessed what would become a seismic shift in the way rock and roll guitar players would approach their instruments forever. Looking back, it was a cool moment. The classic debate; "who is the single most influential guitar player of all time?" is one that still rages among friends and aficionados. Pick your player and make your case, but EVH is gonna be tough to beat. Sorry everyone for the long story...after watching Ms. Diane's reaction I felt compelled.

Great reaction, Van Halen gets their name from the brothers Eddie Van Halen - one of the most inventive and important guitarists in rock history, another video worth the watch is Van Halen Eruption Guitar Solo, and the drummer Alex. Other members were Michael Anthony-bass guitar and the first singer David Lee Roth and second Sammy Hagar. A fun fact is this song was part of a psychological warfare campaign against the former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega in December 1989 by the US Army. He had holed up in the Vatican Embassy in Panama during the US invasion of Panama. The army parked some humvees outside the embassy with loudspeakers and played it amongst other songs to convince him to surrender, which he did 10 days later.

Fun fact I: I've never heard anything VH did with Weenie-boy. Fun fact II: Supposedly, the first choice to replace Dave was Patty Smyth, from Scandal ("Warrior" and "Goodby to You") Fun Fact III: Supposedly early on there were questions about Dave's singing. "Day On The Green" was legendary. I only got to attend one of them, but it was the first "festival concert" I'd ever gone to. I still remember hearing on the radio while driving to work about Bill Graham dying... it was a shock, because his name had been associated with all the concerts that defined my youth. There will never again be a time like that era, but hopefully newer up-and-coming bands will fill the gap into the future... It's been a "long, cold winter" for good rock music, but it does seem to be coming back these days. 😋
