ORIGINALLY CREATED: 2019
2015's METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN uses as one of its two major areas of operation, the Angola/Zaire border region in Central Africa. In this video, as part four of my analysis of the importance of setting to MGSV at large, we take a deep dive into the history of mercenaries in the region, mainly focusing on the 20th Century and the context of South African apartheid, in order to examine how the region, with its unique blend of cultures and long history, its borders largely the fictive figment of Western minds, fits into MGSV's wider themes.

It's a way to protect white supremacy, since tackling the history of different African countries with any depth or nuance, especially contemporary history, would humanize the people there and make students question their country's involvement with imperialism. Even a lot of people ostensibly on the left have this patronizing idea that everyone in Africa was kind of just chilling until Europeans rolled up, which showcases a lack of knowledge or willingness to learn about the cultures there.

@BigDaddyWes
@BigDaddyWes 2 жыл бұрын
Well, it's heavily fictionalized, but the background was always rooted in real world conflicts/history. It serves as commentary of real world events by using them as the context to frame and inspire such great story telling. MGS is one of the best examples of historical fiction ever. It's created it's own world that's at times hard to distinguish from our reality, which is very much on brand for the particular stories of the MGS universe as well as how history itself is shaped by those who write the books.

I would love to hear more of your elaboration on the ideas and ‘chiral’ reflections of reality within. Personally, I find your long form theoretical, historical, and philosophical essays tying the games to our reality very interesting and enjoyable. lol no, Its pretty much exactly what you would hear in school, leaving out how most of Africa was colonized by ethnically homogenous bantu prior to Europeans ever showing up. Rhodesia was a sovereign nation, now the wealth of Africa gets sucked up by an apparatus of offshore banks controlled by a group of people who would have less genetics in common with Europeans than a number of Africans. And in modern day white mercenaries are still hired, often by Africans *themselves* but hey, somehow things are better now that the guys interested statecraft arent in charge anymore and people are slaughtered to fuel materialism by nihilists instead of "racists" that wanted to live in Africa for some strange reason

What is interesting to note on SA's support of Rhodesia is that Rhodesia was less oppressive than SA in some ways but more in others. For example, tribes in Rhodesia had autonomous tribal governance, and blacks could not only join the Rhodesian Army but even become officers (such as in the Selous Scouts). However, they had no voting rights because they were deemed unready for it. Apparently Ian Smith wanted to make sure they were mostly educated and literate before granting voting rights, but this created an environment that made the black population feel infantilised as second-class citizens, driving some of them towards ZANU and ZAPU, who were backed by the Chinese and Soviet Union respectively. ZANU under Robert Mugabe would eventually win the presidential election (generally by threatening genocide against those who didn't vote for him). Overall, I think that your take lacks nuance. Also, what was going on with all the seemingly out-of-nowhere cuts?

Calling the Rhodesian Bush war a race war is a disservice. Rhodesia had an integrated military with white and black troops. The Bush war was an anti-communism war and when the communist took over they destroyed the country. Also the Congo crisis was a response two black Congolese killing white Congolese for merely being white and The uprising was brought to an end by not only mercenary‘s but US UN and Belgian paratroopers, so implying that mercenary‘s slaughtered Africans is an even bigger disservice

Whether it was right or not to exploit native africans is a debate that can be left for racists, it wasnt, but i have trouble calling the rhodesian war a racist one. Both sides commited crimes but i dont think the rhodesians fought as long as they did for racism, but from a fear they had of brutal militia groups pillaging civilians like had happened when potrugal abandoned Angola. Its not so simple as "white coloniser decendants bad, black liberation forces good"

In the same way that the U.S & the U.K made their perspective changes, gradually. Everyone I know from now Zimbabwe & Zambia(former Northern & Southern Rhodesia. Very nice video, you clearly did a lot of historical research, and provided great context. However, I think you are seriously misunderstanding and misrepresenting Conrad's book Heart of Darkness. Conrad was criticizing the European exploitation of African people and African resources and calling into question the European assumptions and values that led to cruelty in the Congo. The title Heart of Darkness doesn't refer to Africa, but to the corruption and brutality caused by untrammeled power and inequality. Another of his books, Lord Jim, is also a strong critique of European imperialism and exploitation.

Look up the Vela Incident. An unexplained massive explosion in 1979 halfway between South Africa and Antarctica. It is widely believed, but was never proven, to be an illegal South African nuclear test done with aid and materials from Israel.

FC2 doesn't get nearly enough credit for its critique of neocolonialism. Understanding this helps highlight the strange irony of Far Cry 3's story & setting, almost a sarcastic reply to the unpopularity of FC2's honest depiction of colonial influence on Africa.
@PlebNC
@PlebNC 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheSoulHarvester Meanwhile FC6 feels like a clown car of disconnected parts that in isolation sound good as a whole never achieves any goal and ultimately actively avoids commenting on the ethics and impacts of guerilla civil warfare. The closest they get is commenting on how killing the dictator will just factionise the nation and start a civil war but it gets hand-waved immediately.

@@PlebNC Much harder to sell a pro-Communist narrative to Americans than an anti-American one. FC6 pulls its punches way more than 5 did.
@PlebNC
@PlebNC 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheSoulHarvester The funny thing is in FC6 the revolution is US backed as Juan Cortez is acting as a liason for the US and is why the guerillas are so well armed. So there was groundwork for a story that would be pro-America despite the communist themes and the ethics of superpowers using regional groups as proxy fighters to secure power or resources. But yeah it pulls its punches alot. I thought FC5 wasn't too bad aside from that it's BS that the US military wouldn't just storm the region if the region's phones got cut off and cultists took over, especially as the region had functioning nuke silos.
@TheSoulHarvester
@TheSoulHarvester 2 жыл бұрын
@@PlebNC That IS the pulled punch. There is no revolution, the entire ideal is bs, it's all just the US fighting a proxy war against itself for no reason. Communism isn't even present; the revolutionaries are fighting for some vague notion of "freedom" against a dictator. Can't play a game where you fight a revolutionary guerrilla war against a US-backed dictator to institute communism. Wouldn't be allowed to sell it.

Excellent video! The way Hideo Kojima injects fantasy into real history and geopolitics is one of my favorite aspects of MGS. Some comments: The whole continent was / is a shitfest. What China is currently doing there will probably prove to be awful too, time will tell. Regarding Mobutu, I'd argue he was probably better than Mugabe. IMO, Rhodesia was less of a racist state than South Africa, and by a fair bit.
