As I have been training on a new program I have been using my heart rate a lot more to track my heart rate and see how my sessions are progressing according to that instead of only using split as a frame of reference. It has really opened my eyes to what intensities are correct for me and hopefully it can help you too!

When I started running I used a HRM. I just set two alarms at 120 and 150 if I remember correctly. I would just run till I reached 150, then walk till it dropped down to 120. As I got fitter for running then it would take longer to get to 150 and less time to drop down, so I was running longer and walking less. Eventually I was in the zone and running the whole time. It also had the benefit that if I wasn't feeling 100% (hangover!) then it would naturally adjust to make it a less punishing session. That was around 30 years ago, and most of my training is now based on the same principles.

Kim Brennan Olympic Gold Medalist and top rated female rower of the decade commented after her Rio gold that after 2 previous Olympics she had embraced a true 80/20 rule. Kim found that her easy sessions E.g. UT2 where not easy enough and as a consequence her hard sessions were not hard enough. Her search for balance in her program rewarded her with a great career.

Cam - As I mentioned in my message via your website, I have been in some fairly dark places over the years (not rowing). “Heart Rate” saved the day. I therefore genuinely believe you are on the right path. Keep the momentum going.

I’ve been on a 12 week plan and the biggest mistake i made in first 6 weeks was trying to yam all 6 sessions a week plus 5 days of my usual weight training every morning. Been reading about heart rate training and for the last 6 weeks of my plan, I am planning to train smart and not hard, will include lots of less than 70% training both on bike and erg and only have 3ish sessions in AN zone. If there were any doubts in my head, this video popped up as a sign. Really agree with you mate on all aspects you’ve mentioned, I feel fully recovered and was able to best my previous workout of an interval type because my heart rate and recovery were tamed. Keep yamming and spreading knowledge, much respect for what you do and are able to share #yamsquad I’ll keep you posted on improvements definitely

I've found heart rate training to be a real game changer for what sounds like similar reasons to yours. Before I tracked my heart rate I tended to just try to go all out every workout. So I was always tired and sore because I wasn't getting enough recovery. HR training gives me a way to set my intensity at a legitimately easy pace on my recovery days so I can dramatically ramp up my total volume and still be rested enough to go hard on my high intensity days. You have to kind of check your ego at the door on the easy days and just trust the heart rate. Those easy days would otherwise have to be skipped entirely to get similar recovery.

Using a Garmin Heart rate chest monitor you can hook directly up to a PM5 monitor on the Concept2 erg. No need for a watch. You can see it in front of you. Also you can connect the erg to Ergdata app that completely keeps track of all your work outs on the Concept2 logbook if you want to sign up for that.

Agree HRM is 🔑 and for £35 plus say Strava or training peaks subs for HR zonal analysis was the best way to spend £60 for my fitness program. Having used HR zones for cycling with a Garmin edge 520 for years, it has taught me so much beyond enhancement, like my own perceived effort can be very unreliable, or, like now, when my body is fighting early stage infection prior to symptoms fully presenting themselves, I know to back off. Great vid Cam 👌

@@bendtheoar839 for me, as I had no power meter on my bicycle, it reported my live HR, in the 5 HR zones, over my Strava route segments/pieces/efforts/intervals and also in whole activities as HR zone percentages and gave me a very crude measure of power in watts. It helped me, over time tune the decisions I was making prior to and during similar sessions, for better outcomes.

Just a recommendation, but you can connect your heart rate strap with an concept 2 erg to make it easier to see your heart rate. I believe PM4s and PM5s both have the ability to connect via Bluetooth.
@MrBoggins1234
@MrBoggins1234 4 жыл бұрын
To avoid potential HRM connection issues, we have a C2 PM4 and it's ANT+ only ( not Bluetooth) and rower needs the latest PM4 firmware v332 installed (for the long radio IDs) . PM5 has Bluetooth also. Shouldn't be an issue connecting HR straps but might be. Forewarned and all that :)

You can't actually connect mine(polar hrm) to the screen, hence why I don't. It's coded to the watch. Also, the monitors don't give accurate HR averages. I'll chat about it in a video soon!

Well I have a Wahoo TICKR Run and it connects to my PM5 AND the iCardio app (both). When I compare the data on the PM5 workout and the iCardio app, it’s the same readings. You start by connecting the iCardio with your chest strap, you let the application run in the background, then you connect the PM5 to the iPhone via Ergdata and lastly the TICKR Run to the PM5. It works flawlessly. :-)
@CameronBuchan

Yes wahoo bands you can, I don't have one. Like I said, it's coded to the watch! How I understand the reading to read off the erg, it displays the HR at each split change. I'm not actually sure if calculates the average as a whole or average over what registers at the split change
@marcmartineau7858
@marcmartineau7858 4 жыл бұрын
If you look at the logbook data on the COncept 2 website, and you look at a workout with the HR data, the HR value displayed at each split is the value the HR monitor gave at that particular time ; not an average of the whole split. I did check that up on my logbook. ;-)

That story sounds so familiar: it's not so much about pushing yourself, we are kind of primed to do that, it's more about being smart about not pushing yourself too hard, or not all the time. Pushing yourself just right is the key, but it requires patience and discipline. It's hard! Do you also watch your HR at wake up time to tell if you are recovered properly?
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Yes that is one method to watch for recovery!

today we were doing 30mins and then 2*15 and I am the only guy who has an HR monitor, and i was told to stay under 160bpm and I ended up going at 90 watts in my last 15, people who pull worse tests than me were getting 120, fuck that was hard not to push myself
@frankastier7184
@frankastier7184 4 жыл бұрын
@@punygolf5791 Yes! Pushing yourself is easier than sticking to the plan. I have the same problem. I'm supposed to only do a very easy "keep the body moving" workout today, and it's driving me crazy, I want to do more! I think endorphins also keep you "high" and wanting to exercise more.

I have a erg piece you should try, Death by 250m You have to do 20x250 meter pieces, you have to beat your 2k pr on all pieces and spm must be 34 or higher. So if you end up at the 19th piece and you fail to beat your pr or miss the spm then it’s over, you get off and do your punishment. Of course there is a punishment if you fail, if you fail, you have to do a 20k I would really love to see you do this😃

@CameronBuchan

It's a little different for everyone. The erg rewards a longer stroke and the higher you bring the handle the longer it will be. Hence you'll see people bring it very high. For the ideal technique though, no not really

The Tickr is the way forward if it's just for ERG use. Two clicks and you're connected to the rower and ready to go. Regarding heart rate, I treat it as a useful data point; but let it drift a little on longer stuff.
@frankastier7184
@frankastier7184 4 жыл бұрын
For me, HR easily drifts with heat. Typically it stays low till I start being really warm and sweaty, then it starts climbing, then I have to reduce the intensity if I want to stay in UT2, or - I have to cool down the place or use a fan. Fan really helps.
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. So simple! Cardiac drift is acceptable but not too much, as with everything. If you start at 140 and drift to say 160 then that's too hard. But letting it drift to 145 and maybe 150 at the end is ok

Interesting topic!! Recently Matt Tarrant has been interviewed By RowChat (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZrygmLyosKvOiYU.html) and in the 46-47 minute he talks about HR and Watts (he said he - maybe incorrectly- doesn´t look at HR too much). Do you realize any variability in your watts zones in view of lactate tests (GB or leander) and your current HR zones?
