There is a lot of corn coming southwest into the Texas Panhandle each day by the 100 car unit trains, over 500 truck loads per unit. Wonder if your corn is moving to TX. About 30 years ago this became the beef feeding capital now dairy has been moving in. There is a pork plant at Guymond that processes 7500 Chinese owned pigs a day. The counties along the NM TX line already produce more milk than the state of NY. Last week I found out they will build three more 10,000 milk cow barns Between Dumas and Dalhart. The milk will have pipe lines to supply the nearby new Faria cheese factory. The COOP I deliver to is SkyLand Grain That has 165 million bu storage. "Ag is changing" is an under statement.

A common grain car for the railroad is approximately 80tons. I’ve had many grain trains as an engineer. Usually around 120 or so cars, at least 2 engines. Nowadays we have one in the middle and one on rear. Something about fuel conservation, idk!

Back in the day when I worked for Pepsi as a loader .... we were racing to unload the transport (triple trailer) in a hurry so we could get back to loading the delivery trucks, we'd drive from the big yard through the breezeway to the back yard and into the BIG STORAGE BLDG. ... I set the pallet on the 3rd row high and decided to drive backwards at full speed out the big door ... through the breezeway to get another pallet off the transport ONLY TO FIND OUT that when going backwards on a forklift at full speed, the forks don't go down very fast but you know what happens very fast.... your fork mast rips into the breezeway roof about 6 feet worth and you can actually fly a forklift onto a pallet of grape soda .... they loved me that day... I learned a lesson that day .... let the forks down before booking through the compound .... thanks Chet/Eric/Brody/Doug

Your videos help me recall memories from my past. It concerns the antifreeze on the floor that you accused your dog of cranking his leg. Well, as a retired teacher of Horticulture, I had a small business in the Spring of power raking lawns. It made for a busy season. My cousin, whose father was a partner in the company that sold to CNH, was helping me out. It was good for him to learn that working up a sweat is good for you. He was driving a new Oldsmobile Cutlass. He called me over to see if he had brake fluid on one of his alloy wheels. I looked at it, dipped my finger in the fluid, and then I did the smell test. It was dog urine. Some dog had cranked his leg on the alloy wheel. My cousin always reminds me that I was his first "boss". By the way, when the company sold, that part of the family no longer had to "toil" like the rest of us. Your beloved dog reminded me of some neighborhood pet using the wheel of that Cutlass. 😂

One train car is about 33 tons empty and can hold 110 ton of corn for a grand total of 143 max per car. Most trains are 100 to 110 cars. I work for Union Pacific in California and we have 8 grain facilities that get trains. Most at least 1 a week. So that is a TON of corn for chicken and cattle feed

Thanks for the trip with the grain, no one has ever done that or had all the information you relayed. I did check - train car typically can carry 3,333 bushels, truck trailer typically can carry 950 bushels, so train car can carry 3.5 x a truck trailer.
@jarred267
@jarred267 Жыл бұрын
3300 bushel would be an over weight car. Max car weight on the rail road by law is 226,000. A super jumbo hopper has a tare of about 60,000#. At 56#/bushel thats 2965 bushel max capacity. Thats also figuring an exactly perfect test weight at exactly 15.5% moisture. Going off Timpte's books a 50ft tri axle super hopper 72" wall with heaped corn is 1750 cubic ft @ 45# per cube. 78,750# max load on the trailer. Which makes since with his 95,000# scale in weight. So 2 and a bit trailers per train car max. Larsons run bigger trailers than most farms though, due to the local weight limits.
@lynwessel2471
@lynwessel2471 Жыл бұрын
@@jarred267 Jumbo hopper cars haul 3800 bu. of corn, standard are 3300. Truck gross 95700 - tare 29420= 66280 net ÷ 56 = 1184 bu. Minnesota winter overweight permits are 88,000 for standard grain semi and 99,000 for tri-ax tractor and trailer.( Not allowed on interstate highway.) If caught over weight you're fined for every pound down to summer weight.

I pulled many of these loaded unit trains in my RR career. Avg rail car length is 60', weigh in 128 to 135 tons each, depending on the size the car. The newer "J's" hi-caps, are 58' and hold 136 ton but cannot be loaded over 130 tons on some branch lines due to different factors, rail size, tie conditions, bridges etc. We combo'd two unit trains (one time) for a total of 210 loads, 27300 tons, 4 AC 4400's @ 17600 HP, distributed power. Across the flatlands of ND this train ran like a dream.

I worked on the track department for BNSF. Unitrains weather grain, coal, or Freight, are usually around 110 cars or a mile long to fit in the sidings. Any that have an incline of more than a certain percent, there'll be three or four units on the front and two pushers on the back , to alleviate the knuckle and drawbar breakage on the train. Plus a lot of the older Bridges, weight-wise cannot handle all the units at one time.!!!
