www.Heart-Valve-Surgery.com - Calcified heart valves are a common form of heart disease that can lead to symptoms, risks, heart failure and life-threatening situations as cardiac function is compromised due to valvular defects (e.g. aortic stenosis).
In addition to unwanted cardiac conditions that result from calcified valves, patients are also concerned about the potential for calcium deposits to "break off" a diseased heart valves and cause a stroke.
To educate heart valve patients about calcified valves and stroke risk, we interviewed Dr. Marc Gerdisch, the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Gerdisch is a heart valve expert who has performed over 6,000 cardiac procedures and more than 4,000 heart valve repair and replacement operations.
Key questions asked-and-answered in this video include:
1. What is a calcified heart valve?
2. Why do valves calcify?
3. Which valves typically calcify?
4. What are the symptoms and risks of a calcified heart valve (other than stroke)?
5. Can a calcified heart valve cause a stroke? During TAVR?
6. What, if anything, can patients with a calcified valve do to prevent stroke risk?
To schedule an appointment with Dr. Marc Gerdisch, please call (317) 682-0089 or visit www.heart-valve-surgery.com/s....

What an incredible video. Am recently Dx w/ severe AS. Due to have OHS end of April. Am 69 yrs old. Was evaluated for TAVR, but my annulus is fairly small, so being on the younger side, my team of doctors decided best option would be OHS. The information in this video was very helpful. Thank you again.

Wow, thanks Adam, I requested this one, its really appreciated, especially since I am in Indiana so good chance I will have Dr. Gerdisch as my surgeon. Dr. Allen from Florida also answered this a bit when I asked and he mentioned that the calcium was kind of like surrounded by something, but if it breaks off as easy as Dr. Gerdisch explained, that seems like contradictory answers, though he did say its very rare to have it happen. I wonder what keeps it from doing that?

Very informative, thank you. Youve given me information so I can talk with my dr about this. I have minor sclerosis show up on an echo because I insisted things felt off. I have heard there are no symptoms at this early stage, but I definitely felt my heart was being different. Im glad I insisted.

Is there a way to prevent stroke other than the sentinel? They don't do that in Canada where my dad may be having this surgery.

Can they do TAVR on BAV in Boston Brighams and Women, I was told no. I told doctor I wanted my file to say I wanted natural valve, not mechanical but he advised against it. I saw my father on Coumadin for 20 years and bled souch or easily. Arms almost purple and always had to have level tested. I know there are some other newer meds. Just turned 59 and doctor said due to my age I likely would need it replaced so he advised against. I also have high cholesterol, issues inflammation, two TAA besides Bav. At 4.5 last check and have another MRA in may. My father's descending aorta ruptured.

Hi, Unfortunately, from what we know, tablets/medications/supplements can not remove calcium from a stenotic valve.
