www.Heart-Valve-Surgery.com - There is no doubt about it. Heart valve disease can be debilitating and life-threatening. Thankfully, there are several different surgical and transcatheter procedures to treat valvular disorders including aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation.
Heart valve operations are designed to extend the life and quality-of-life of patients needing help. However, patients have important questions about life expectancy and heart valve surgery. To learn more, we interviewed Dr. Joanna Chikwe, Chair of Cardiac Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.
Key questions asked-and-answered during our interview with Dr. Chikwe include:
1. What is heart valve disease?
2. What are the symptoms and risks of heart valve disease?
3. Can heart valve disease be fatal?
4. How can your team prevent death due to valve disease? How do you treat heart valve disease?
5. Are patients permanently “fixed” after a successful heart valve procedure? Why or why not?
6. How might life expectancy vary by (i) type of heart valve disease, (ii) type of valve procedure, and (iii) type of valve replacement?
7. What other factors might contribute to life expectancy including related cardiac disorders (atrial fibrillation, aneurysms, and coronary artery disease)?
8. What are potential surgical complications (afib, pacemaker) that may impact life expectancy?
9. If required, what should patients know about heart valve re-operations?
8. Are there any misconceptions about life expectancy and heart valve surgery? If so, what are those misconceptions?
9. What, if anything, can patients do to enhance their life expectancy after heart valve surgery?

I had a double valve replacement (Aortic and mitral) in 2017. I was not brave enough to watch all these videos before my surgery. I went through the most, being soo far from my family. Spent 3 months in hospital with barely having visitors. Went through mental health toll💔 Did so bad in university 😢 Fast forward 6 years later, I'm doing so good i have my 2 years old daughter 👶 👩‍🍼 and doing my honours in university 😊 i can't wait to start working and spoil myself enjoying my 2nd well deserved life with my little family 👨‍👩‍👧

@@cherylschumaker1366 I know you were referring to the OP, but seeing my old post has me wanting to update. I had my surgery last Monday. Was sent home on Saturday and have been healing up at a rate that has surprised everyone. My condition was much more advanced than thought and by surgery time my ejection fraction was barely 10%. Then I had issues breathing and was on a respirator for over 24 hours after the surgery. My prognosis was grim until a sudden turnabout on Wednesday. I can only imagine how hard the OP had it. That experience, though traumatic, should always serve as a proud source of strength. Thanks for making me smile again OP.

Hello neighbor! I just spent 22 days in June in St. Luke’s, 16 of those days in the Cardiac Intensive Care, code blue one time, difficult open heart surgery for 2 aortic valves removed and a sutured in new valve, the surgeon told me later that “we thought we had lost you 2 times”. The 2 aortic valves removed were my natural valve that went bad on me in 2017 at which time I had a TAVR. And then ….I had to have a pacemaker 6 days later. And they must have bought me enough versed to keep me from remembering everything. 😇 I am 72 and I sure am not bouncing back to normal like you have. The incident that caused my code was a malfunction in my swan ganz catheter and I started hemorrhaging into my airway. This is a very rare occurrence but the mortality rate is 78%. They truly saved my life. Was rushed back to the OR to fix it. But I want to join you in singing th praises of St.Luke’s. EVERYONE was so professional and caring. I would encourage any of my friends and family to get into the St. Luke’s system. Great hospital, great physicians, great NP’s , great care staff, oh I could go on and but I better shut up now, I get to rambling. 🎉🎉💔 2:57

I had 3 mitral and aortic valves replacement. When I was 17 I had mechanical valves. I would not recommend young people to get mechanical valves because it will affect your pregnancy. You are totally dependent on the Coumadin medication (rat poison) and my INR can never be at a right level. I didn’t have much of a life. Can’t travel because I have to get my medication adjusted. The mechanical valves last for 12 years. As I was working out, I developed a stroke. My second valves replacement I had my two valves replaced with animal valves. I felt like a free bird, no medications needed. I travel as much as I want. It last me 15 years. I start getting shortness of breath and knew it was time to replace my valve. I picked up Covid in December and that made it worst. I develop pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs). I was on a blood thinner so I chose to get the J&J Covid vaccine with no side effects. So my plan was to get the TVAR procedure for my 3rd surgery but unfortunately both valves need to be replaced and currently they only have the TVAR for aortic replacement not mitral. You can only have the TVAR done once. I went through another open heart surgery recently, got tissue valves again. I am now 45yo and still alive. 12 years ago TVAR didn’t exist. 10 years from now there will be greater technology to replace valves. It has been quite a journey but don’t be scared. The cardiac surgeons are really good and this is now a common procedure. There is comfort when you put your faith in God. I have a will written out and all, but it is not my time. Go into surgery with a positive attitude and look forward to what you will be able to do after surgery. The recovery process can be long and painful but you will heal and life will move on. God bless!

The melody valve is regurgitating more then normal they want to go in and remove the melody valve as much as possible because it's only 8mm big to relieve pressure from heart RV. Put bigger stent or replace valve if they can't cut the stent out I have been treated for endocarditis about 4 years ago nun was found growing but pick line to heart at home for 6 weeks it glad antibiotic worked I been open about 6 times already really nervous with all the stuff going on in today's world don't know if there in the best interest for me or for there program agenda any in put any one

She said my bypass was textbook, and was very routine for her. This may sound crazy but I was never nervous about having this surgery. She is a wonderful person and doctor. I say it in that order because she saw me as a person not a patient. If you need heart surgery and can get to her she is the best chance you will have, I am so sorry she left Long Island. First, do your surgeons have mid-level such as a PA or nurse practitioner who you can ask questions? If not, any chance you can get a second opinion and get information. Going into surgery without feeling comfortable and having your questions answered, is pretty much 1960s versus 2021. Having your questions answered, will improve your comfort level and your recovery.

Awesome hospital, Cedar Sinai! I underwent a 3rd open heart surgery on Feb2021 of a mechanical valve performed by a one of the best heart surgeon Dr. Ramzy at Cedar-Sinai Hospital, LA. He surely took great care of me. I had my two other open heart surgeries in 2010 and 2019 at Good Samaritan Hospital, LA. In 2019, the heart physician at Good Samaritan Hospital who implanted a heart valve replacement in me, and it was the WRONG SIZE. I am still upset about the matter which caused more damage and TAVR, I will not trust that type of procedure, it caused me more problem. Avoid that TAVR procedure, it is a lazy way of fixing a valve. Dr. Ramzy did a great performance, was very caring and took care of me until my return back to Guam this year 2021. God Bless him! I will be visiting him on May2022.

I had a mechanical valve when I was 20. I was asymptomatic (in terms of pain) when the doctor told me to take surgery as it was enlarging my aorta and heart. He said to me -"you are not gonna make it to your 25th birthday with the present condition". I was born with a leaky valve, and from childhood, I knew this day would come but never imagined it would be at age 20. It was a hard decision to come up with, but now I am 24. For most of the part, I don't listen to the clicks, and when I hear them, it scares the shit out of me. I have noticed it gets loud during stressful days and clicking constantly increases anxiety. I would still recommend a mechanical valve over an organic valve the medication related to the valve become a habit in weeks. I knew I was on the younger side and would probably need another surgery in the future, and I would choose mechanical again over organic. One surgeon did recommend TAVR. I am in good shape and am weighing open heart again during this vital part of my life vs. later. If I got TAVR now it could last 7 years, but I would be at same cross roads. Love to hear from someone in same boat on how they decided. I will soon have surgery to repair/replace an "leaky" (aortic regurgitation) aortic valve. Recent discussions with my surgeon have resulted in three options, repair the valve, a biovalve (pig) or mechanical valve. Both my surgeon and myself prefer repair, but that may not be feasible. The next is the pig valve with the mechanical valve being a last resort. I am 71 (72 in August) and if the pig valve is implanted, does it's "lifetime" depend on how active/inactive I am after surgery? I work out and used to lift weights, but all that will be tempered due to my upcoming surgery. Thanks for any info you might be able to provide.

@@Noodlebo In my case it was due to several factors. I have a tricuspid aortic valve and one flap was prolapsed, which means it did not re-close allowing the the unoxygenated blood to back-up in the lower aortic chamber, thus not allowing enough of the fully oxygenated blood to get to where it needed to go, i.e., my lungs. Consequently, without good blood flow back into the lungs, the rest of your body, which then causes a whole new site of issues. If you google it, you'll likely get a much better and clearer description than I've provided here.

Great question and point. Yes, typically aortic valves that are stenotic are not repaired. On the other hand, aortic valves that are regurgitant (leaky) may be repairable.

Hi, Thanks for your question. We have not heard of another situation where a patient - with a mechanical mitral valve -needs to have three replacements in one year. This may happen. We have just not heard of a specific patient case to refer to.
