@@PaPa-cd2zi I can tell you right now, that the senator and the local state reps will not do anything whatsoever besides possibly direct their complaint to the same wildlife people that mandate the fawn be killed. I'm going thru this same crap over here in Texas right now. I've had to finally file a Federal lawsuit in the Beaumont TX Federal court, as Texas has been stone-walling my State District lawsuit refusing to respond to subpoenas, Discovery, Requests for Production and Notices of Deposition (they literally just didn't bother to show up for Depositions here)! I'm not wealthy this is very hard and very expensive to fight them, and I shouldn't have to fight them in fact but like I said the laws were written by people who only see the animals as targets to blow-away with their AR-15's and sniper scopes for "sport" (aka Fun!) and thus they don't want people to see the animals as anything else.... so people like us, our beliefs are a threat to their fun and they don't like that so they don't like us! smh!

Born and raised in Maine, I never imagined a state that doesn't rehabilitate wildlife, especially deer. Our state does a fantastic job of managing the deer population, including rescuing and rehabilitating injured wild animals. Wishing you the best of luck, and I hope you can change this law or at least bring attention to the matter! 🍁

I m retired from the KCS railroad, while inspecting tracks I found a owl with a broken wing, his eyes were gold and as big as a silver dollar, his wingspan was at least 6 feet. I called Missouri Department of wildlife and they told me do not capture the owl I could get arrested. I hung up and called the Kansas City zoo, they said bring him in. And I did. Hey ya’ll - conservation biologist here. I’ve worked in quite a few wildlife facing roles over the years from being a former Oklahoma state park manager to a fed Fish & Wildlife employee operating in South Dakota. I first want to THANK YOU for your super thoughtful conversation and understanding the wardens were just doing their job. In my experience, fish & wildlife officers never experience the same support other law enforcement receive and so I thank you wholeheartedly. We get into this field BECAUSE we care about animals and I can promise you this whole situation was likely one of the worst days they’ve had on the job. Secondly, I’m so sorry to hear what happened. I’ve seen my fair share of injured fawns, I’ve tried to rescue & transport a few to rehabbers myself. Unfortunately none of them made it for various reasons. Third, thank you for touching on “the best place for a wild animal is in the wild.” Ive seen some terrible things happen to animals that were fed by well meaning park visitors (starvation via malnutrition, developing aggressive behavior by associating humans with food, etc). All that being said, some of the most frustrating laws, from a biologist’s point of view, are those that come from political origins. Let the science dictate policy, and we will uphold and protect it. I do not know the history behind this specific Louisiana state law, I’ve lived in many states & they all allowed whitetail rehabbers, but Jim, I think you hit the nail on the head of one big possibility - trying to discourage deer as pets and discourage people from taking them from the wild. Fawns are one of the most frequently disrupted species taken from the wild by a well meaning person when mom was actually very close. This would be my best guess as the most likely reason. Many wildlife laws that seem counterintuitive exist because people tried to exploit the wildlife/find a loophole in the past. The super disheartening part about creating laws that don’t allow loopholes, is that there’s no flexibility for discernment or extenuating circumstances, but it is also because of this extensiveness of the law that has allowed the United States to have so many great conservation successes over the last 100+ years. There’s always two sides to the coin. For what’s it’s worth - either a) the wardens may have “turned a blind eye” and not destroyed it (again, we are softies) or b) Lydia can rest easy knowing the quick “goodbye” the wardens gave the lil guy was FAR better than the dog attack. On a personal note, I CANNOT stand loose untrained dogs. Loose dogs kill a surprisingly high number of deer each year. ❤ all my love to your family.

In some states it is legal to hunt deer with dogs and in some a so called dog running season exists. Generally, the seasons are regulated and the use of the dogs are limited. From what I see, the use of dogs to hunt deer is legal in Louisiana, but I'm sure it is limited by regulations. But the problem is dogs trained to run deer don't know whether a season allows it or not!! They don't look at calendars or know that it is or isn't legal. Generally healthy deer can outrun a single dog, although fawns are much more vulnerable. If you let dogs run loose, they will chase most wildlife. and most times the wildlife evades getting caught, however when newly born animals are vulnerable. Natural predators like coyotes and wolves, can take quite a few young deer, but often to feed their own young. Arguably, that nature at work. But domestic dogs rarely kill for food, but packs of wild dogs do. If you let domestic dog run loose, you are interfering with nature as much as someone rescuing a fawn in trouble. Usually, when laws a written, there is a preamble justification for the law.. That is pretty standard practice for most legislative bodies, I'm willing to bet that there was some justification for this law and it was probably about making some sort of exploitation of the wild deer illegal. But sometimes the law itself is arbitrary. I doubt that the law here was about preventing people from helping this deer with good intentions. But the reality is that there are people who will exploit laws that have "wiggle room" within them. That then drives arbitrary laws. I suggest that you thoroughly research this law and see if you can find the justification. That in turn is what you can use to "make your case". Public opinion and public pressure can change arbitrary laws. I think the idea of becoming a licensed rehabilitator is a good idea and one that fits the way you two look at such things, Other states do this kind of thing and it is probably worth research neighboring states who do have such provisions. In the end, Fish and Wildlife divisions are about preserving and protecting this natural resource. That should always be the driving force, but one needs to realize that management of the wildlife includes things like hunting and protection of predators It's about seeking a balance that does not create nuisance animal populations that may starve to death. Nobody really wants that either! In the big scheme of things, saving Dasher to be euthanized doesn't make much difference for the species. But it is about preserving ad protecting this resource from being exploited. I think that's how you have to approach your efforts to allow what you two did, Rehab populations provide some good management things like testing for health ad disease issue as well as things like tagging to track migration trends This can provide valuable information for those charged with managing the wildlife. So it can become much more than saving one deer. I think that's also a good way to approach this making it about much more than saving one deer. Good luck.

I don't know about Louisiana, but in Texas the TP&WD has a "policy" that their Game Wardens do not have to follow the Constitution or the Bill of Rights, and can thus enter your private property and even break into your home at will to conduct un-Constitutional Searches and Seizures without any court warrant issued. I am suing Texas in the Federal Court out of Beaumont TX on this matter right now in fact, and a similar lawsuit in Tennessee was successful and set precedent that state personnel cannot follow a policy that allows their DNR people to trespass on private property without a court warrant any longer (and Tennessee lost on appeal of that decision, too!).

They cloak their "sport" in terms of "Conservation" (by killing for fun, they think they are saving the animals?) and providing food for people's families (not that anybody starves to death or misses a single meal because they can't kill a deer mind you!). btw: Were the German NAZI's concentration camp guards just caught between a rock and a hard place too? Once you bottle feed and raise a fawn, it's no longer a "wild animal" it becomes a domestic animal and a family member (what some might refer to as a "pet"). That is what these laws are meant to prevent, they don't want people seeing these animals as anything but targets to shoot for fun, if people start seeing them as furry family members then suddenly the hunting and killing of the animals for "sport" might become unpalatable to the general public and laws might get changed and cut into their "fun" and that makes US the bad people for wanting to try and save a baby animal such as this fawn! They killed the fawn as a lesson, to hurt the Cajun's who clearly cared for and wanted to save it... for no other reason did that baby deer have to die! It was a lesson to them and others not to touch any wild baby animals for any reason unless you just blew it away with your AR-15 and high powered sniper scope (that, they approve of as long as you bought a permit from the state to "take" the animal)! My heart hurts for you guys in this situation. I can hear the passion in your voices. You are NOT overreacting. Sounds like to me that there is an opportunity to rewrite the law to provide for exception cases such as what happened in this case. There are cases just like this that make sense for an exception to the law. You guys are great folks. You did the right thing in this case even though it had dire circumstances for this fawn. Thank you for sharing this story. Keep doing what you do. This story will capture the hearts and minds of so many others. Change will come because of this, I promise!

You are not over-reacting one bit... you are under-reacting if anything! You should be furious and should be calling out names of the people who killed the fawn that you only wanted to save! You, are a good person Lydia... they are evil men though, following evil laws just like the NAZI Concentration camp guards did back in the 1930's for 1 example! "Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing!" Tell me that those officers were just doing their job again.... 😐

I don't think so I do not live in America and I know here in Ireland they are culling deer in some areas of our island, but there is no law that says you cannot help a defenseless animal. A few years back a baby red fox was knocked down by a car on our road, all his legs were broken, he could not walk or feed. I did what everyone else would do, I nursed it and after 4 weeks he was running around and after 8 weeks we got up one morning and he had decided it was time to go back to the wild. We were delighted but sad at the same time. Every time I see one around our house now I wonder is that the little guy we helped. I am with ye on this.

What a heartbreaking outcome! It should not be against the law to help and rescue animals that have no chance otherwise. I am incredibly sorry that this happened to you! You are definitely not overreacting and I think that this law should be STRONGLY apposed. This law needs to change. I would understand needing a permit for wildlife rescuing, but if they don't allow others to help these poor babies, then they need to rehabilitate them, and not kill them...

It will take Federal lawsuits to effect changes in these draconian states however. These laws were written by men who have only 1 interest: Hunting and killing animals for "sport" (aka Fun!). That's it, nothing more do they want these animals to ever be other than targets! Dasher was killed as a lesson to Lydia and anyone else who would dare to see him as anything other than a target to shoot at, LEAVE THE ANIMALS TO THE HUNTERS! "Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing!"

It’s awesome that you did what you could to save that little fawn… it’s incredibly sad that someone felt the need to call the law on you both for saving a life. And then felt that intervening to end that little beautiful life is justice. What they did is going against their concept of letting the fawn alone in the wild. I could see if they put the fawn back in the wild but instead they took control. You are definitely not overreacting. You intervened to save a life and they intervened to end a life. I’m sorry for you both having to go through that. I’m incredibly grateful for your heart and your actions.

Its evil that such a law exists, in any state! Why do hunters with high powered rifles and sniper scopes have more rights to kill and take the heads as trophies to mount on their walls than we do with a bottle of formula and a heart and willingness to feed care for and raise these animals? "Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing!"

You are a model for what is good and right and give me hope that there are some in the younger generation that will provide a good and sustainable future. What you did with Dasher was very commendable and loving towards a helpless creature. The fact that the State does not provide for rescue of that sweet little being is disturbing. There is a special place in Heavan for you both for what you attempted to do. I fully support any lobbying you can do to change this ill-conceived law. God bless you both!!

Are you aware that Tennessee DNR personnel were trespassing and spying on private property owners at will? And that Tennessee was sued over the practice, and lost? Tennessee then appealed, and lost again! Now Tennessee DNR personnel must get a court ordered search warrant in order to enter private property and conduct searches, just like any other law enforcement personnel... and they don't like it one bit! I'm in Texas, which has a similar policy exempting Game Wardens from the 4th Amendment... they can trespass on your private land, break into your house and search anywhere they want to without a court ordered search warrant they don't even have to tell you what it is they are looking for or what they suspect you of having done! It's insane, and I have been a victim of it myself ... Texas Game Warden Mike Boone broke into my private property forcing my driveway gate open while I was at work in Houston, he entered my property and we don't know what he was there for or how long he was there or what he did while he was in my yard or if he even entered my home, but my next door neighbor was watching him as he opened my driveway gate from inside my property and then drive his truck into my property and was txt messaging me as it was happening! I have Federal Lawsuit filed now, as TP&WD refuses to acknowledge that they broke into my property or tell me why or what they did while they were in my property and this has to STOP! I didn't spend another night at my house after I got back and confirmed that my gate had in fact been tampered with from within, I gathered up what I could and left immediately and never stayed there again and ended up selling the house to an ugly homes investor as a result of this and I remain in hiding right now moving from friends house to friends house because I do not feel at all safe anymore because of this incident! It suxs. 😞 "Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing!"

I am a resident of Georgia; live in a semi rural part of my county. For 25 years, I have fed from 6 to 12 deer every day in my yard. Even got to see twins being born in the back yard one day. If I am late putting the corn out for their supper, they stand looking at the house until I get it done. Once I found a fawn caught in vines at a branch on my property. I took the fawn to the vet to make sure it was okay. The vet told me of a lady in the next county who was registered with the Game and Fish Department to rehabilitate deer. I took the deer to her where she fed it along with three other fawns that had been brought to her. During the day, she would take the fawn across her yard to a fenced in area at her lake and leave them for the day; retrieve them in the late afternoon to be fed and kept safe for the night. She did this every day. Her statement was that one day when she went to get them for the night, they would have jumped the fence and returned to the wild. This is humanity. I hope and pray you can get your law changed. The three of you would make a perfect rehab family for fawns. You did the correct thing by saving the fawn from the dogs. So sorry it didn't work out for Dasher. Love your videos. Good luck.
