In this video we discuss a common device that you may need to have when the heart beat is slowing down. The pacemaker is a battery and chip device that is typically positioned in the upper part of the chest wall and is able to stimulate the heart's contraction. Professor Barlis reviews what this device is and some key information that will help provide you with greater insights into how they work.

Hi everyone , It has been a month since i had mine put in.I felt the difference almost immediately,no more shortness of breath.The funny thing is, i was at the gym the day before not feeling anything terrible.The next day I was in the doctors office and a few hours later I was in ICU waiting to get one ,and did not realize how bad my heart rate was. However I feel great and just started going back to the gym and taking it slow. Stay positive and love the ones around you !!!

Wow, good on you, my heart. Unfortunately, it is too damaged to do anything like gym exercise. Lots of scarring has been found on a recently MRI scan and I have severe arthritis in my hips but am currently waiting to have a difibulator fitted my cardiologist on Monday gone said she recommended I will be fitted with a difibulator waiting time now

Lying in bed having just had a pacemaker fitted. Before that I had a Reveal Heart monitor inserted. The Reveal showed my heart was slowing and stopping sometimes. Got a call from my cardio this morning asking me to come in for the pacemaker operation today. So pleased that the Reveal highlighted the problem and it was dealt with so quickly. Not a very pleasant operation, especially the pummelling to get the device as deep into the muscle as possible. Hopefully no more blackouts now.

I had a pacemaker for afib. Three months later had massive heart attack caused from stress. No blockage or valve problems. Had to be shocked twice from vtach. Bood pressure 239/ 189.. my dr said i was very close to dying. Took 3 yrs off my pacemaker. I have had my second one put in. Heart trouble caused deep depression.Still have it some. Thank God for pace makers and wonderful doctors. Take warning. Stress will kill you. That was 8 yrs ago. I am 77. Still work at Walmart part time

Thank you for making this video, excellent detail and explanation. Have had mine for 1 week now, i agree with others, it hurt like he** when they were pushing the device into the area. Of course I'm 110 lbs without alot of meat in that area.😮, was told would take a month or so to get back up to speed. Also i was the epidomy of healthy, walk 15k steps a day, eat a very healthy diet, dont drink or smoke so it was quite the shock that this happened. I had been told one year earlier that i had a left branch bundle, when i expressed my concern, if i could live that way, i was told "yes, your healthy and both sides never go out!" Boy were they wrong, i had a type 2 stage 2 mobitz block. Hang in there fellow pacemaker souls. Best to you all😊.

I hear you! I had one put in a little over week ago, and I agree. I felt like I was awake/conscious for most of it, and still feel pretty beat up, but also noticed the difference immediately when I was in recovery. My wife and a neighbor friend commented that my color was so much better. Really surprised me, LOL! The Aquacel bandage over the incision is heavy and "pulls" down when I'm vertical, causing some stinging skin discomfort. The nurse unintentionally pulled some skin off in a few areas when removing the tapes, which was excruciating. Per her suggestion, I've been using Neosporin on the wounds to keep them from getting infected. So far so good, seem to be healing fine..

BEST explanation of pacemakers I've watched. This explanation gave me more information and helped me be less worried about what may happen in and after getting a pacemaker. I had carotid artery surgery 3 months ago for a small tear in the inner lining of the carotid (not a blockage) and the vagus nerve that regulates heartbeats was impacted causing sporadic low heart rate.

I have had a pacemaker with defibulator dince 2012... ot has saved my life more than once. At first the setting where off and the defibulator went off premature. However over the past 13 years it has saved Mt life four times. Getting shocked is more like being sucker pinched in the cheat. Dose not hurt..just scares the crap out of you. Over all after a few months you will forget it's there and life is normal. No issues going through airport security etc.. it won't blow up by xrays, microwaves etc. Getting close to strong magnets is a bad idea. A magnet is how the doctor shots it off.. but once your away from a strong magnet it will turn back on by it's self. If you doctor recommendations one then grow up, listen to hom/her and think about your loves ones concern. I just wish the technology would include a GPS hub or a button for instant errection..😅

@@chevyblue10 The pacemaker is doing it's job of keeping his heart rate at 60 bpm. He is walking most days and is gaining stamina slowly. He had to have emergency gall bladder removal surgery this past August which has set him back considerably. Being careful right after surgery will reap rewards in overall health. Do what your doctor tells you to do or not to do. Let the doctor set the timeline for activities. I hardly think about the pacemaker.

I got pacemaker in 2015 because my heart rhythm was 30 to 35 instead of 60 to 65. In 2020 battery failed so rhythm was down to 24 to 30. Put in icu for night, got new pacemaker. Now my chest pain is permanent so a new pacemaker from Abbot will replace Boston Scientific pacemaker which got 2 wires on left of heart. New will add 3rd wire to right side of heart. However it will not be compatible for MRI in case of a stroke which paralyzes.

My wife, diabetic was becoming unconscious about 20 years ago for a fraction of second. She was referred to Cardiologist at NIMS Hospital and he advised for placement of Pacemaker. While examining her heart condition the Doctor also observed two arteries are blocked and immediately placed two spring loaded stents simultaneously after placement of Pacemaker under the skin. Every six months, the company of Pacemaker who supplied will check with Electronic devices about its performance and the left over life of it. Now it has three and of years life. This message I am sharing in support of Eminent Cardioligst's advice through this Vedieo for the benefits of readers.

I had a pacemaker the 1st of january and ended up staying at the hospital for 9 wks and another 2 wks at another hospital in a swing bed, it waa either that or a nursing home. During these 9 wks i was sent home 3 times only to be rushed back to the hospital. A week after pacemaker another surgeon came in cleaned arteries and put stents in, when i was finallt released a month later they went in and did Afib, now they want to put a watchman device. Im still struggling with my blood pressure and heart rate drops to 35 or jumps to 140. I have a monitor but doctor doesnt seem concerned, i can't function nitros dont help. Plenty of times i prbly should have gone back but i dont want to spend another 9 wks in the hospital because they couldn't figure it out!!!

Cheers for the information chap! 👍 but one thing these videos always seem to omit/never detail is the significant sensitivity of pacemakers to magnetic fields, why this is, and what could be done if a person who often finds themselves in environments with very strong electromagnetic fields needed a pacemaker fitted. ⚡ My understanding is the magnetic vulnerability comes from the way the pacemaker is interfaced with external equipment (i.e: Data uploads use a magnetic coupling?) so surely there are ways to work around that, such as an external interface port? 🔌 Thanks! 😇

One week today since I had my pacemaker transplanted. I’m doing well, no issues so far. Pulse rate immediately went from the 40 s to consistent 60-62. I am still wondering how the wires could be dislodged if I raise my device side arm straight over my head. Have to not do that for 4-6 weeks. Ugh!! How do the wires become solid in place after the 4-6 weeks? Thanks

According to my smart watch my pulse will occasionally drop under 50 when I'm in bed or if I fall asleep when sitting. My cardiologist tells me medicare won't pay for a pacemaker unless he can document a pulse under 50 several times. What really bothers me is that when I am exercising hard I rarely get my pulse above 100.

@HeartMatters
@HeartMatters 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent question Dave, let's arrange an episode on this topic as it is an important one and although a type of pacemaker, CRT is a little more advanced and used for different scenarios, often when the strength of the heart muscle is reduced. All the % means is how often is the heart itself relying on the pacemaker to help with its function. We will discuss in an upcoming video and thank you for making this suggestion.

Doctor, I’m a high school anatomy teacher. I would like to use info about pacemakers in my class. Can you tell me what part of the heart are the leads put into? I know the chambers, but is it the endocardium or myocardium? Is it on the septum or other walls of the heart? How is the 3rd lead put into the left ventricle when needed? Does it come through the aorta? I am not a pacemaker candidate so I won’t take anything as medical advice. Just for education purposes. Thank you if you can answer.

My consultant has suggested that I have a pacemaker. My problem is that my heart beats very fast and it happens on a daily basis, he said my ecg showed 300 times a minute. This video says that pacemakers are for stopping hearts going slowly. I wish mine went slower. It seems a pacemaker would be the opposite of what I need. Does anyone have any advice?

Can a pacemaker decrease ejection fraction? Thank you in advance.

thank you for the comment, there is a condition known as pacemaker induced cardiomyopathy where a pacemaker can essentially make the heart a little more lazy and therefore weaken heart function. This can often be monitored and picked up on early with follow up of the pacemaker.

Ok then how do you continue to keep fit and exercise with a pacemaker . I’ve had my device in now for 3 months and To be frank. I hate it !! So I have a ICD/pacemaker and I was told it was the safest option for me. I had 1 and 2 cases of VT first when I was racing my bike and a week later they said I had a abnormal heart rhythm which left me in AF 2 After a cardiologist said I was in full sinus rhythm again and then I out training on my bike and I had VT again So they said because I had a athletic heart and low resting heart rate the pacemaker would help . Well my life has so change I” been fit active all my life and now at the age of 50 I have a device!! It’s shit now my body wants to keep fit and exercise I ride my bike and still with my device the heartrate will still go back near my old resting heartrate 40-42 beats then I’m back in AF !!! I would like to here your views !!! Thanks

Good information, but I wish you had discussed pacemakers without leads.

What is difference between a pacemaker and a defibrillator
@HeartMatters
@HeartMatters 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you David, a pacemaker purely helps the heart when it is going too slow and prevents this from happening. A defibrillator is a more advanced device that in addition to having the role of a pacemaker also can deliver an internal shock inside the heart to bring the heart beat back if the heart were to stop and go into an abnormal heart rhythm.

My father had a pacemaker implanted due to complete heart block. He fainted 4 times before the pacemaker was implanted. 6 months after pacemaker surgery he experienced some dizziness as he experienced before the syncope but he did not faint. Within a few minutes he was back to normal. Does that mean the pacemaker is working well?

It would always be worth getting his cardiophysiology team to check the pacemaker. At 6 months it is unlikely to be a fault in the device or the leads, but a check wouldn't do any harm. Just like any electronic device, sometimes faults develop...but modern pacemakers are extremely resilient. It could be that one of the leads has moved, but again this is rare after the first couple of months. In the meantime I would advise him to stay well hydrated; the best pacemaker in the world won't be effective if he doesn't have enough fluid volume. Also try to see if there's a correlation between what he was doing and the dizziness; it could be more blood pressure related than cardiac rhythm issues. Neither of these would do any harm, but only a check would diagnose problems with the device.
