I’m told time and time again, it won’t work. You can’t put lithium in the engine bay of your 4WD. Well another 6 months has passed and this time I’ve been testing the iTechWorld 120X PRO lithium battery, has it worked?
Want to help support XPLORINGOZ and become part of our community? Consider joining us here to get access to extra content:
/ @xploringoz
Lithium batteries are part of the future and the 4WD’ing and touring market is slowly adapting and transforming this technology into the ‘norm’. This being said, there’s an unwritten rule that these batteries can’t be mounted in a hot and exposed location like the engine bay.
iTechWorld seem to disagree with this and back their products with a warranty to support this application, but does that mean it still works?
In this episode I show you how I’ve used what I think is the most used, abused and tested 120X PRO in existence. I show you around the unit and its physical condition and of course we conduct that famous capacity test. Has it lost usable power after 6 months?
Please keep in mind that I’m not on the iTechWorld payroll. I’m under no obligation to conduct these long term review on these batteries and I’m not being paid, sponsored or receiving any commissions from any sales. These thoughts are mine and mine along.
I hope that this episode has provided you with some useful information to help you make an informed decision as to whether this battery is for you and your vehicle’s setup.

Thanks Nathan, appreciate your down to earth very informative reviews on these Itech units. I can also put to rest any concerns re Itech warranty. Brother ordered 2 Itech 120X, run them parallel. Had a issue just shy of 12 months, so brought his van to me. He's figured out 1 battery isn't charging, so I attempt to jump it off of 1420CA Pro. with no joy. Ring Itech, they locate his order, ask for it to be returned via their $35 flat fee return program with Auspost. Battery arrives, accessed, BMS has failed, hence new BMS installed, battery returned, brother reinstalled it very satisfied by itechs warranty assistance. Oh, due to the battery having a hard fault, that $35 freight was refunded into my bank account. You simply can't fault that service, so I can attest Itech stand by their product. I'm very impressed by my Itech gear, irrespective of others views, and that warranty service, well that just justifies my belief in Itech gear.

Good to see its still doing well underbonnet. I've done over 20 Lithium installations (not underbonnet) in the past 4 years for friends and family - we used many different brands according to what was personal preference, size, availability, pricepoint, and application - like Renogy, DCS, Atem, DCMont, Kings, Thunder, Atlas, VoltX, etc and some are regularly running coffee machines and air fryers. They are all going well and the batteries cost anything from $350 upwards. I've come to the conclusion that to spend $2000+ on a Lithium battery is a waste of money, so I agree with your point that there is no reason to spend top dollar.
@cyclemoto8744

I agree with the the fact that it is uncessary to spend 1500 or more on a 100ah lithium battery however I am yet to see a convincing long term review on a sub $700 battery. As with most products or services, I believe there's an optimal price point which isn't at the bottom or the top of the range. Cheers

Thanks for you input mate, that sounds spot on. Although the cells may vary I believe it's a law of diminishing returns when spending that much money. It's just about finding the right compromise and in my case a company that supports the mounting location 👍

I have used this battery for about 6 months under the bonnet of my 200 series travelling around 10,000km. It has been 'wrapped'. I have found it has operated flawlessly. The only issue is the top of the battery warped and bulged slightly. The casing has not cracked. Itechworld tell me that this is to be expected and is related to the ABS material used. ABS tends to warp slightly under heat, and this is a normal characteristic. It's worth noting that other battery casings not made from ABS might break under similar heat conditions, potentially exposing the internals. Further, inside the iTechworld lithium battery, there's an additional case that safeguards the battery. The warping is confined to the outer case and won't impact the battery's operation or performance. I have not read any other user commenting on a bulging top.

I've had one of these in my Hilux for about four years. Initially I had it under the bonnet as I was told it was rated for there. After nearly a year it suddenly stopped charging. Took it back in for a warranty claim which they initially refused saying there was water ingress which caused the damage. Whilst I do some 4WD off road and have occasionally crossed water, nothing would come close to putting water that high up. A bit of to and fro and they decided that if it was installed under the bonnet and water damaged it they should fix it for me. New circuit board and it's back in. I have since re-wired the secondary electrical system for a completely unrelated problem (too much voltage drop to the rear anderson plug) so it's now in the canopy. I can honestly say this is ten times better than any AGM. You can draw it down to completely flat and it just charges up again. After years of use I'm still getting three or four days on the fridge. Greatly recommended but I'm wary about recommending it for under bonnet use.

Thanks for sharing an update. Recently added the 120XPRO to my LC200 and the double effective capacity for only twice the cost is a no brainer. Still running an older AGM BCDC and no issues charging. Also adding the starlink to my setup means AGM would be highly underwhelming in its ability to cope with this power hungry device. I was sick of early AGM failures from the case cracking of multiple brands. Weight and corrugations don’t mix. If I get 5 warranted years out of the itech I’ll be stoked. The boat and caravan will be next for upgrades to lithium!

04:45 Current doesn't charge and simultaneously discharge the battery. If you have 30A from the Redarc DCDC and 15A draw from loads only 15A of charge current is absorbed by the battery. (Kirchhoff's law.) Great review by the way. I've been stressing the original iTech 120 battery for a couple of years now.

The factory dmax battery crapped itself in no time, just recently put a new lead acid in after 4 years of life from my 2nd replacement battery. Theres nearly 700 bucks of battery already, the price of this lithium. I think i will get one of these next time.

I’ve narrowed it down to these and another brand. Just wondering what your thoughts are on putting 2 of the itech 125 pros in the van or maybe putting in a 200ah. I must say, in my opinion, that your tests have greatly improved my opinion of iTech. I've been using Pure Energy Litthum batteries for 3 years which are better value and are backed with a reputable after sales service from Battery World. I've had one failure due to the BMS and the battery was replaced with a store credi (not pro rata!). The only concern I now have with iTech isn't the quality of their batteries, but their after sales service which is somewhat questionable based on user feedback. Thank you for your content. Cheers

Nathan, once again, great work. Some time back you did a video on the itechworld cranking lithium and I remember that you removed it because your two under bonnet batteries were levelling themselves with one another. Have you ended up putting that back in and sorting that issue? I also had an itech under bonnet cranking battery It suffered the same issue of being drained by the auxiliary battery I did install the victron voltage regulator under the bonnet to prevent this constant drain Unfortunately the victron units are not rated at high temps 50degrees plus I ended up getting a Century lead acid cranking battery as I’ve had flat batteries in the bush b4 and never again I put the lithium starter battery in a battery box and is now my camp power source and spare starter battery

Good review of a battery that hasn’t failed you (yet?). What is possibly a more important question tho, would be “how does I Tech World treat you if you have a new 120 pro battery 2 weeks old & your remote on the Gibb River Road, 2 weeks into your Aussie lap and the battery fails? What sort of warranty backup can you expect from I Tech World in that scenario. Because that’s the exact video we have just watched from WA Wanderers KZfaq Channel who find themselves in that exact scenario. And their experience has been thus far - far from satisfactory / exemplary. So your remote & depending on your lithium storage power to run the fridge freezer in your caravan from your solar inputs and car alternator & the heart of your storage system craps itself, its stinking hot, your going to have to give up all your planned remote excursions to all the bucket list must see gorges etc & high tail it to somewhere with a 240v supply like a caravan park - where there’s services like mobile phone to be able to deal with I tech world & you have 240v shore power to run your fridge freezer and air con. You will need a big enough town to have a freight depot, because I tech world want you to ship the defective $1000 battery back to them for testing before they will accept any warranty claim liability & ship you a new replacement battery under warranty. So likely a minimum of a months caravan park rent & the end of a bucket list trip across the Gibb etc, all waiting on whether I Tech World are going to “step up to the plate” and cop it on the chin & send a new replacement battery. It’s my opinion, that is NOT the type of business that I want to put my trust for after sales service and warranty in. If I tech world weren’t a bunch of @ss hats, and cared anything about their reputation amongst the 4x4 off road and travelling crowd, they would have stuck a new battery in a helicopter and dropped it off the next morning and taken their defective battery home for testing to find out why it failed. Yes the chopper ride would eat $20k in avgas fuel alone, but you know what? What’s your company’s reputation worth? I wouldn’t trust I tech world as far as I could kick them after the treatment I’ve seen them dish out to WA Wanderers over defective product. Their response is a breach of the ACCC regulated Australian Consumer Law Guarantee - that products have to be “reasonably durable”. I tech world would be my last choice of a supplier of any products at all - despite them trying to buy off influencers like yourselves & Sarah & Keelan Travels etc. I’m just not buying all this “cash for comments” type promotions any more. My 2c
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 6 ай бұрын
Wow, ok. Well certainly a little more 2c worth here, but I’ve got a few points for everyone who reads this to consider. 1. There are some very strong opinions from your end in regards to their warranty claim, particularly since it would appear that you haven’t actually experienced this yourself. You need to keep in mind that every product has vulnerabilities and can fail and given that iTechWorld sell thousands upon thousands of these units, there are going to be failures. 2. Why do you think I went lithium in the first place? Because the ’so called legendary’ AGM battery failed prior to this…. Twice! 3. You have inferred that I’m somewhat paid or incentivised for these reviews? I purchased my first lithium battery like everyone else at full price. I knock back affiliate marketing to remove my incentive for positive reviews (I mean, I was pretty clear in the video). I don’t get paid, nor am I required to conduct these follow up reviews. 4. I’ve never heard of WA Wanderers and can’t find the video you are talking about, but let’s keep a couple of things in mind. Firstly, we don’t know the full story. Sure we know what they are saying, but are you 100% certain there isn’t some other dialogue going on in the background and secondly, YTer’s like the drama. They get more views like this. The bigger and more dramatic a failure is, the more this is emphasised in their videos. 5. Have you been to the Kimberley, or the Gibb River Road? It isn’t remote by any means? You can drive the entire unsealed high speed road in a single sitting. You have Kununurra to the east and Broome to the west, both of which operate regular mail programs. I should know, I lived in the east Kimberley for several years. Regardless of whether it failed here or in the middle of the CSR, as mentioned earlier, anything can fail and my AGM did, so what if that happened? Should I start roasting my AGM supplier? 6. Lastly, I can’t and don’t comment on customer service. I am treated somewhat differently because of my videos and this wouldn’t be fair to comment. I have heard both good and bad reviews on their customer service, however without personal experience, it’s not fair to relay second hand info. I can evidently see that you are well and truely against iTechWorld batteries, maybe lithium in general, however I sincerely hope that this isn’t because of a single YT’ers opinion on the matter. Are iTechWorld batteries perfect, absolutely not. Do they offer great value for money for those seeking lithium, absolutely. I am due for a long term 12 month review in February ’24 for this unit and I’ll have some comments to make, however I can hand of heart say that these are genuine results. (PS. I have had some minor issues, all of which will be aired in Feb). I hope you find the solution you are looking for in your setup and don’t stress too much about other peoples situations. Not all of us are out here (YT’ers) are looking for a quick payday. Have a great New Year mate 👍

However, I believe that the DCS dual battery combo makes more sense and is better value. Reasons... more overall capacity, high discharge capability for engine cranking and winching, comes with inbuilt solar regulator and isolator, no need for your expensive dc to dc chargers. It's a true drop in. I just need to find $2.5k 😂

For sure, these do appear to be great options, however as you mentioned, they are significantly more expensive, so I guess it depends on what kind of use you plan on getting out of them. Although I understand these need chargers, they make it perfect for many of us out there with systems setup with more traditional auxiliary AGM/Gel etc batteries. 👍

I’ve had issues with DCS batteries one had a cell that failed another the blue tooth doesn’t work It was an expensive exercise I’ve also noticed KZfaqrs with DCS batteries When they upgrade their 4 wheel drives some time later And install lithium it’s never a DCS

@@michaelhermans4753 Yeah I guess every product can have its issues. More importantly, how did DCS resolve your problem, how was their customer service? I very rarely take notice of youtubers and their product reviews, most of them have very limited knowledge, especially when it comes to electrical. They're also bias towards the products they're reviewing, even though they'll go blue in the face trying to convince you that they're not sponsored ect ect.

Yea down to earth review on behalf of ITECH world. Just got an email off ITECH with you all over the ad. You are not impartial as you claimed in other KZfaq presentations on ITECH batteries. Terry from JAFFA was right these series of battery presentations are for ITECH World. Why not be upfront and say so, no problems. Credibility is so important Nathan.

Disappointed to hear you say that and personally I think there is a lack of education in the 'social media influencer' business these days. Whether you believe me or not, that's up to you but apart from receiving the unit, I'm not influenced one way or the other in terms of my data or opinion. I don't get emails from iTech, so I don't know what the material was, but I'm assuming it was one of my videos? If so, it's on the internet, they can refer and link to any video on the platform they want, nothing I can do about it and I didn't even realise they did it. I get these comments on every video, all the time. I don't know how else to say it, I don't know what other 'challenges' I can issue like I have previously. If my iTech fails tomorrow, then you can guess my next video, but it seems to fall on deaf ears time and time again 😞 In the end I've given up trying to convince and educate people on my stance. Now I just put up my videos as they stand, with the data and experiences I have encountered. Take it or leave it, its your call...

Not a nay sayer, just curious its contents to know why these will hold up, understanding the mosfet configuration and if they are using super caps is the only way to know if their “battery tech” is running within specs of the chemistry. From what I’m reading the specs seem pretty “off the shelf” for a standard BMS with the short circuit protection delay set high.
@leblancexplores

And battery configuration, they’re running 275A out of chemistry designed for 2C max discharge for a typical set of cells, are they paralleling the cells?

Nathan are you confident enough in the lithiums to use it as a starter or wincher - I have no issue with using lithium and have this as an auxiliary (in a canopy of my ranger) but with a 300 on order I’m just looking at alternatives as a starter battery - another great review by the way and I don’t doubt your integrity in what is being said - it’s a bit to scientific to be sponsor biased in any event - regards Dave B

Thanks Dave, appreciate it 👍 So yes, I'm still currently using and abusing the iTechWorld 1420CA PRO starter battery (slightly different lithium chemistry). This has been installed for over a year now and working well, including many winch applications. If you are looking at this, I would probably just look at the pros/cons of using Lithium Ion as opposed to LifePO4 chemistry first 👍

Thanks for the great review. But this capacity is not my experience. Just had 3x iTech 120x batteries in my van - installed by pro technician. He reports max combined capacity is less than 290 amps. Installed solely with iTech gear 40a DCDC, DCBC and BM. I plan to take this up with iTech when I collect the van.

Mine constantly shut the BMS down in the Simpson when the vehicle is at low speed and engine under load, creating heat build up under bonnet- you haven’t shown this test yourself🤷🏻

Yeah, that’s a bit disappointing. I mean, we’ve done plenty of slow going rough terrain 4WD’ing, including the OTL at ambient temps of 30 + degrees. I’ll share this clip with you, although I will mention that this was with the older 120X unit. I really couldn’t of got the engine bay much warmer than this! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/leChY8eL1cebnHU.htmlsi=J-4VfG2IZosxvFUq

If your shunt is still connected incorrectly (aux battery connected as start battery) your usage figures are incorrect.

The figures aren't incorrect. I've tested every circuit in my vehicle and every single one of them calculates into the total usage per figures. All, except for the ARB air compressor. I appreciate your concern though.

I found a new way to drown, my 120X again :( Water got in around the negative terminal bolt boss. They only have some very sparingly used sealant around the pentation on the inside. Water slowly dripped down cables to BMS slowly filling the case. Cells are still excellent. So another BMS, and even more Sikaflex. Just. don't leave it outside in the rain. Like me. Under the bonnet, only getting the odd water splash it will last for ever.

Hi Nathan I read the reply about the 'WA Wanderers' having a problem & I can understand their frustration. It is absolutely right to call out poor after service, but only where it's warrented & the manufacturers are allowed to return serv. I like you couldnt find anything by them. Aftrer a bit of rummaging around & a little bit of luck I found this for you, by 'West Aussie wanderers'. I know next to SFA about Lithium batteries but it might mean something to you. Hope it helps see what you think. Keep up the good work mate, you always come across as a straight up bloke this end, fantastic chanel. For sure, I agree with you there. I charge the battery through a Redarc BCDC 1240D charger (under bonnet). I have done over 30000km with this battery from Victoria, up the East Coast, Cape York, Savannah Way, NT parks and now on the Gibb River Road as I travel the country full time Temperatures varying from 1 degree overnight to high 30's in the top end, with humidity. I did longer term testing with my previous 120X unit and this performed well given the scenarios over a longer period of time. Obviously as time passes, my testing and reporting will continue 👍

I bought 2 x 120 lithium batteries from this company or so i thought and had them programmed into my victron system but something was never quite right and i didnt find out till i ordered another one and then they told me i had to set them 20 amphours back as the previos batteries were 100 amp hour not 120ah sohad system running supposedly on 240 ah when in fact it was only 200ah no wonder i was under powered to what my needs were. They turn a deaf ear when i brought this up to them ,but it wont be the last they hear from me!!!!😡

Can we confirm which model these batteries were? If they were the original 120X units it clearly stated in the specs that they were 100Ah batteries? If it was the 120X PRO units, then yes I see your problem. If the name 120X was misleading, then can I ask how all the other AGM manufactures get away with the same branding without complaint? eg. FullRiver AGM advertise as a 105Ah capacity, but only get about 75Ah?
