Do you have the heat embossing know-how you need? I’ve got your complete guide to success in this tutorial. We’ll talk embossing tools, embossing powders and everything in between.
You can emboss a piece of cardstock using an embossing folder. You can also heat emboss using an embossing heat gun. While the word "embossing" is often interchangeable between these two techniques, they are quite different.
Today's how-to video will take you through the steps of using colored embossing powders as well as how to heat emboss in all 49 Stampin' Up! colors (including Memento ink)! I'm sharing tips on fixing common mistakes, too!

Lisa, Cathy Zielske also gave a tip for embossing to keep from burning your fingers. It works well. Use a wooden clothes pin. The wood will not conduct the heat. Thank you for the great tips. I love embossing! It makes the cards look so sharp!

Thanks Lisa! I do love embossing, especially love white on black cardstock. You're right, it is very striking! I also really enjoy using the clear on whatever color of ink I am using on my cards.

3 things that were missed from what I learned...1. Clean the area before using your Versamark or whatever ink you are going stamp with some kind of embossing pad powder made for this purpose (or make your own from corn starch or similar powder). I assume SU sells the little pads. Or buy 1 from Gina K, etc if you don't want to make your own. They last a very long time. AND 2. Pre-heat up your heat tool/gun for about 20-30 seconds before you use it. If it's already hot when you go to apply heat, it will melt the embossing powder much faster. Just don't burn your fingers like you mentioned. I use tweezers to hold what I'm embossing. AND 3. If you are embossing vellum, heat from the back to minimize warping. (For me personally I start everything from the back & then for regular paper go to the front. I find that doing it this way is very fast & I don't have to apply as much heat for as long so the paper never warps & the embossing powder melts even faster.) Happy crafting & stamping.

Enjoy your videos. From my experience using an embossing buddy or baby powder to remove unwanted oils from the paper before applying the VersaMark works best. You are left with a crisper image and you don't need the paint brush to remove unwanted strays of embossing powder.

Lisa, thanks for the terrific tips. When I was young, my dad had a printing studio in our garage. He always let me do the "thermography" on all the cards he printed on our old (1856) "snapper" press. He told me I was the Head of the Thermography Department at his print company, Alta Press West. I LOVE using embossing powders as they are the exact same thing I used as a child..... And today, I actually learned a couple of tricks I'd never thought of before! So thanks for that! Happy Holidays!

Do you use the embossing buddy or some other powder to keep the embossing crystals from sticking to the card stock areas where you don’t want it? Hope I’m making sense.

I love this. I have some questions for you 😂 1st, I saw one of your shorts where you used diluted glue to emboss a splatter. Will it be possible to paint a custom image with glue and heat embossing this? 2nd would heat embossing work on other surfaces like material or leather?

Yes as it means you should get great results every time. If you don’t use it then you may have powder stuck on areas you don’t want it and it will spoil your card. Good luck x
