Heat Pressing Dahlia Flowers | Eco Printing | Eco Steaming | Nature Dyed Paper

This demonstrates using a heat press on pink dahlia flowers and leaves. They make a great pattern and turn out nice and colorful. I used watercolor paper - I think 140#, that has been dipped in alum water kzfaq.info?o=U&vide... and left to dry first.

I absolutely LOVE all of your videos. Particularly this one. I have done some printing on silk and cotton this weekend, by boiling and steaming, and I looking at trying the ironing method. I must say Dahlia`s is my next experiment. Curious, what do you use all these Beautiful papers for? Apart from journals? Have you ever tried copper sulphate\acetate as a mordant? Im looking forward to lots of experimenting with different fibres and botanicals.. Looking forward to your next video, as Im working my way through them. Thank you for explaining things that work and dont work so well. I always listen with intrigue! you are most inspiring! Sandy x

Hi, appreciate the nice comments. I have only used alum for the mordant and have been happy with that so trying to keep it simple:-) I use them for journals, wall decor, greeting cards and backgrounds for pressed flowers. I have also occasionally sold some paper packs on my Etsy shop. Thanks for watching, Em

Beautiful job. How long does the color last on the paper or how do you protect it?

Hi Maria, like pressed flowers it depends upon the botanical. Many will last years while others will fade faster. When put in a journal they will last much longer, since sunlight and UV rays is the real problem. I do spray with a UV resistant spray first. I like the 2X brand by Rust-Oleum in clear:-)

Has to do with how the pigments interact with the substrates. remember that the color of an object is what wavelength of light it reflects. the flower petals have a cellular structure unlike that of paper, so light refracts differently.

I have had some dahlias heads make through traditional pressing but it is hit or miss. Have not tried pressing them with the microwave yet. Also could try drying them in silica gel. Not sure what else to try. The individual petals will dry really nice in a regular press. LOL, yes those are arm warmers.

Thank you for your quick reply! I am a newbie to all of this so what would traditional pressing be? And no idea what microwave pressing or silica gel drying . The dahlias are my mom's that she planted every year and she passed in April so I am eager to do this soon. I really appreciate your help you do beautiful work !! I think I need arm warmers too lol

Just pick off the dahlia petals. Leave them to air dry in place with good air circulation like a sieve. Jush them up every few days to staop them rotting. When dry they will hold their colour for years. You can use them for dyeing or printing at any point after them. Keep them in a sealed jar and label it.

I am in my very late 70's and have nothing left , pretty much, but time to play. I even try to make my work into some kind of play. I have acrage and you just cannot kill that stuff of. If you don't have time I understand.

Hi, sorry for my delayed response. I purchased the heat press from Pro World 10 +\- years ago. Now days there are a lot of heat presses available for a much better price than back then. An internet search will provide a number of sources. Just be sure to read the reviews. So far I am happy with mine, however haven't used it too much yet. But when I do, it gets lots of abuse as you can see in the videos on eco steaming. This has a 15" x 15" bed size. It is a Fancier brand, but I don't see where Pro World has that brand anymore.

Hi, yes. While I alum the paper as a separate process most of the time (and I have videos in the eco printing playlist that goes into detail), I do wet the paper before I add the botanicals with water and/or vinegar water. Wet both sides of any paper used since it is the moisture that helps leach out the colors. Appreciate the comment:-)

Hi June, yes the process is time consuming. I find the boiled/steamed/cooked method to also be time consuming. Well even the iron takes time. Heck, eco printing is a time suck, LOL. what are the best types of leaves for eco printing? I can't find any that work for me. I live in las vegas though.

Hi, good question. The climate in Vegas is totally different than the Oregon coast, so i don't really know what grows there to recommend. Perhaps others reading this that live in a more desert type of area will be able to provide some ideas. I would just do some small scale tests to see what happens and enjoy the experience. Can you do this with a Cricket Easy Press

Hi, I have researched what a Cricket Easy Press is several months back as I thought about purchasing one. I don't know why it wouldn't work if it can get hot enough, say around 350 degrees or so. However, they seem much more expensive than an iron and eco printing can get messy. Other considerations my be how it holds up to this process and how easy is it to clean. Starting on something smaller or thinner first would be my suggestion. If you do, post a reply as others may also be interested in the results and have the same question:-)

I try and use botanicals I think will hold color well. If kept out of direct sunlight they can last a reasonable amount of time. They will fade or mellow over time just like may things. Even fabric, watercolors and other things fade over time - especially when kept in the sun. Thank you for watching:-)

Put damp felt under and on the top and steam for 4 or 5 min. You wouldn't need to spray it so many times.

Nonsense. This is science and exploration using botanicals. Steam is nature - like using an iron. Alum is nature. People are nature. Hot water is nature. Grow up
