Heat treating stainless steel blade, Heat treating 12C27 stainless steel
G'day and welcome to a new series on making a beginner knife.
This is a simple little knife that is a copy of the first knife that I personally made, it has a very simple design that I first drew onto a piece of steel from a kit that i had purchased. The design was simple and made to fit the piece of steel I had by all means copy it or look at the references below.
Today is the heat treatment of the blade, a more complex 12C27 stainless steel but still very much in the reach of beginner knife makers to use.

Thanks 👍 nothing to hard in it at all, this steel requires a few extra dollars in equipment than a carbon steel but yeah trying to keep this build nice and simple.

I love the video and the time you took to clearly explain the full process and steps involved for stainless. I learned so much. Any chance you can provide more information on the Thermometer / Digital Temperature Control gage..? Temperature control and exhaust / pressure control seems so important and any added advice there would be amazing..!

Hey Thomas, I have changed my system out to a new automated system since then, but not sure i really like the new PID system that much, seems to require more playing around with than the old system to be honest. I may well be changing up again and using a needle valve in the supply line and going back to that previous system you watched. Always adapting to get the prefect system. I have a heat treat oven but due to it's size 3ft it just takes way to long to get to the desired temps can take an hour and a half to get that 5-6minute soak, get for steels that require ramping temperatures but not for the simple hold and soak style, hence the use of the gas system from cold 15 minute until quench. Mate that one has saved me a lot of time effort and frustration in straightening blades, and the odd shorter knife😱

Good knowledgeable video on the heating processes,did you build up that forge? I like the temp gauge set up .I’m interested in this stuff ,iv done a bit of forge work ,mainly on horse shoes ,shaping and clipping them,and therapeutic type shoes. Keep up the good work cheers for now Wayne

Hey Wayne, the forge is a kit i bought from Artisan Supplies, the kit and a gas bottle are the basic components, but I would add in a refractory coating if i was to build it again. the fibres of the Kaowoll do come loose when you knock them with metal. It's awesome for knives, small work and multiple pieces, but a good coke forge (which mine isn't) beats it hands down for larger work. need to get around to a build on a better coke forge, but my dodgy welding skills hold me back there.

Ye the one iv been using is a small gas job ,great for shoes and small stuff. Have been looking out for stuff to make a bigger coke one ,been keeping an eye on farm clearing sales in a hope,but getting to many dealers around now lol ,cheers wayne

Homestead Aus I do have a tank end and a commodore brake drum and can nick the rest of my other one, the killer is my welding skills and spare time

Ive got a coke forge and a gas forge. I'll use gas any day of the week for my knives. It's so much cleaner lol. Coke forge is painful in summer too.

leetpg yep gas for Heat treat on knives. Coke is great for forging but mine needs an upgrade.
