It’s ultimately a player’s decision whether they want to celebrate or not. I have no problem if a player does celebrate against a former team , but it’s not a “disgrace” if they don’t. It’s just a sign of appreciation and respect for their former club. No one should have a problem with a player celebrating and you definitely shouldn’t have a problem if they don’t celebrate

Tom is right tbh, you already scored the goal if you want to celebrate it you should. I think its fair that players dont if they feel like they dont want to but to give someone hate or boo them for celebrating etc is too much. You cant expect a former player to not celebrate he's moved on from your team and plays for another. It's his work, its a professional relationship.

Tom's the type of person to realize they're wrong halfway through an argument and argue even harder for their obviously wrong opinion. It's not black and white but in general if the fans treated you well and the split from the team was amicable it makes sense to keep that relationship positive by being respectful (which could be not celebrating or a subdued just hugging your teammates type celebration), if the fans/team treated you poorly then go ahead and celebrate your little heart out because they don't deserve your respect.

Its entirely dependant for me, I know I wouldn't celebrate against my favourite club or against a club I had spent 5+ years with because you're obviously going to have a level of attachment after that length of time. Players not celebrating against teams they spent 1-2 years with or been on loan with is where I think it's a bit silly just doing the "respect" thing because its "expected" more than it's necessary.

The only reason why I’d have a problem with a player celebrating would be if they were a massive legend at the club. For instance I’m a Newcastle fan, if Alan Shearer had a late career move to Aston Villa and scored against us and celebrated, then it would feel very weird and strange. Meanwhile if Bruno Guimarães moved to Man United next season and scored against us and celebrated, as much as I would hate to see it, I wouldn’t be angry with him because he’s not a legend, and therefore him as a player doesn’t personify the club in the same way a Shearer does for Newcastle, or Henry does for Arsenal, or Kompany does for City, Rooney does for Man United, or Kane does for Tottenham, etc.

Tom L on this one. These aren't that common. I agree with him when it's players who's only played a couple of years at a club. Just celebrate. However club legends who doesn't celebrate will probably still have strong feelings for the club. That Tom can't separate being employed by another team from loving a club is so odd. Like, if QPR came a gave him a fat salary to do Social Media work for them it doesn't mean he would celebrate like a lunatic if they beat WBA. The club legends will in most cases view the club as more than just an employer. Unbelievable that he thinks you should shit all over that and the fans who supported you for years. Maybe he thinks that celebrating wouldn't be disrespectful, but that is equally as weird - depending on how you do it, and what it means to your current club.

I Agree with Tom on this, if a Club doesn’t show loyalty to the players, why should the player show loyalty? They have every right to celebrate the goal, let it be against their former club. Why does a fan base or a club be so petty about a former player celebrating a goal against them? If you hate it, then why did you let him go?

There’s a difference in “Scoring a goal & celebrating that moment” & “scoring a goal against your former club & celebrating like you want to prove something”. When a player scores a goal against his former club and goes on to celebrate in front of his new clubs fans, that’s alright. If they want to just prove a point and end up celebrating like a prick in front of his former club’s fans, that’s debatable on being disrespectful.

For the “It’s respecting the fans” debate. Do the fans refrain from booing players who are having a bad run of form?! Do they show respect then?! Or do they make him/her feel exactly what they feel at that moment?! So, why celebrating a goal , not just against those fans but for scoring an actual goal in a game of football, such a crucified thing.

Not going to lie if you don't celebrate a goal bc it was against your former club I see it as a little disrespectful to your current club. Also, footballers do kinda owe a club if they gave them a career but don't owe that much bc it's not like they were giving charity from the club. Also if a former club/fans can respect a player enough to let a player celebrate a goal against them thats messed up. The player made the decision that was best for there career and don't punish them for that

Why are we talking about the club giving them a chance like they would have never been able to play football anywhere else. Ultimately this is a business and not celebrating almost seems disrespectful the the fans that they currently represent. Harry Kane doesn't owe Totenham anything he has made that club relevant over the last 8 years. He probably won't celebrate because he wants the relationship after his career but why are we acting like players owe these billion dollar organizations their life..

Footballers need to protect their personal brand. Using Walcott as an example, he may have ambitions to return to Arsenal in a non playing role in the future. If he celebrates here he would not be accepted by the fans. We can talk about respect and thats how its portrayed but theres more to it. Adebayor could never become a striker coach at Arsenal for example. Maybe Tom should think more about his personal brand going forward before he slips up and starts talking about bombing countries for no apparent reason 🤣🙈
