About the Renogy: It takes 4 amps from a charge source via the terminals only when the BMS senses the temp is 5c or below and only when it senses a charging input. It does not take energy from the battery all the time. Perhaps you can amend the video so your viewers are given accurate info.

I just watched the video and caught the error as well. Renogy only heats when it senses charge power. Depending on your application the Battleborn may be better for you or in my situation, the Renogy self heating function is better for my application.

I am considering the single unit 300 ah. Should I go with 2 150 ah I order to add a 3 later if needed? Also the 150 ah currently include a free Victron charger. 2- 150 ah are same price as 1- 300ah. Are there any other considerations in this decision? How does battery stay warm when no other charging source is operating like when no shore power or solar (night)?
@madetoexplore
@madetoexplore 2 жыл бұрын
What brand? Canbat? 2- 150 amp hour batteries would be easier to move around because they would be lighter. The battery doesn’t need to stay warm when it’s discharging, only when it’s charging.

Hi from Edmonton. Great video for us Northern folk. Just finishing our custom off-road trailer. Been looking into all 3 of the batteries. I'm just curious if you feel Canbat is worth 2x the cost of the Renogy?
@madetoexplore
@madetoexplore 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure that it’s worth 2x the cost but I do know that they back their products much better than Renogy. If anything goes wrong down the road, getting ahold of Renogy for troubleshooting, warranty or returns is a PAIN. Trust me, I’ve done it before. Canbat has AWESOME costumer service.

Nice video, the Renogy battery only heats the battery when it has 4 amps of charge from solar or the alternator. It works below 5c until it reaches 10c. It works very well and can discharge at very low temperatures.
@madetoexplore
@madetoexplore 2 жыл бұрын
“The intelligent self-heating function will start operating automatically once the battery’s core temperature drops below 41°F (5°C), effortlessly keeping your battery charged in cold environments.” It doesn’t say anything about receiving 4 amps of charge?

@@madetoexplore So let's say it is -30 C : when i start to charge the battery (20 A), will the heating element heat the battery first until the battery reaches +5 C, and then the battery will start to charge ? is that how it works ? Also if the battery is not charging, are you confirming it will never heat automatically ? Thanks

My experience: Within 1 week of 20a dc-dc charging at about freezing (32F) temps, the self heating function seems to have broken. Renogy says I have to warm up the batteries first before the heating will turn on (no, I'm not kidding)

Hey guys thank you so much for the video ! I have a question ! I have the renogy life po4 lithium battery (12v 100ah) . In the manual it is written that the charge temperature range is 0 to 55 celcius degree ! Does that mean it does not warm up in cold weather and that i should not use it under 0 degree ? Plz help out with this thanks you guys it is very appreciated

Welcome! Thanks for watching. The BMS won’t allow the battery to charge if the temperature is below 0C. The battery can still discharge though.
@danielsmorodin5478
@danielsmorodin5478 2 жыл бұрын
renogy heating function is a benefit, if you are just planning to discharge (use the battery) discharging a lifepo4 battery at a warmer temp offers more performance/ longer life by maintaining an better operational temp
@madetoexplore
@madetoexplore 2 жыл бұрын
I agree but what if the battery is sitting in cold temperatures for a long period of time without being recharged. The battery would eventually drain itself trying to stay warm and freeze.
@cbdane
@cbdane 11 ай бұрын
One thing that wasn't clear in your review. When the Battleborn heating system is "turned on," it doesn't start heating until the battery temperature drops below threshold. In other words, there shouldn't be a downside to leaving the heating system enabled even in warmer temperatures. The ability to disable it is for long term storage when you know there won't be any need for charging at cold temperatures.

Thank-you for this video. I have an off-grid cabin which is only water accessible. During winter, we wait for the lake to freeze before crossing over. Last couple of weeks we have been getting freezing spells, reaching -39C with windchill. I have been looking to switch to lithium batteries for a long while but concerned with how to keep them warm when we're not there. Never heard of CANBAT and happy to hear how they handle heating the batteries. Their LT version seem to make better sense for my application.

Hi, great videos, thank you. I'm looking at different Lithium batteries, and would love to support a Canadian company. Recently heard about Canbat, and watched your reviews. I was also looking at Volthium (out of Quebec) - pricing and specs look very similar to Canbat. Wondering if you have any experience or heard anything about the Volthium batteries? - side question, did you consider having 2 100Ah in parallel instead of the one 200Ah - just for redundancy if one fails? Thanks!

No I haven’t had any personal experience with Volthium unfortunately. Yes I did consider that. Twice the components also double the chance of something going wrong though doesn’t it? I think theres pros and cons to both

Hi. So the Renogy starts heating below 41 degrees, and stops heating above 50 degrees. This is stated on the website page for the battery. I think you were saying that the heating element draws a charge from the battery all the time. But again, rather, it only draws a charge if it's below 41, then switches itself off over 50. Great video otherwise. Thx.

@@madetoexplore Slow yes, 3 days to answer a question regarding the change from 50 Ah v1 to v2 and running them in parallel. When they answered the response was it's not recommended without any specific detail. I could of read the amazon description and learned the same, in fact their website says nothing about it. It appears they changed the BMS to include low temp protection and modified parameters. Same manufacturer, capacity, and model but now a new version, yet they no longer sell the older version. I used my v1's maybe 10 times and mistakenly bought the v2's to run in parallel now that I have the opportunity to build on the renogy 50amp dc to dc charger. To make matters worse, Li time is currently selling a 50 aH for $65 cheaper with twice the lifecycle, if I can even believe the websites specifications. Granted Li time is not a company owned in north america and I would prefer to support domestic businesses. However and also, if they didn't update their website, it's possible the specifications are not accurate. So not only is the support slow, there was no technical support, quite probably faulty advertising, and a number of other concerns I have uncovered through this process with their business model. Their batteries may be decent quality, but their business model is concerning. I'm not very happy.

To keep my setup the same , wow they did not understand what I was looking for i screamed at the rep on phone because they kept asking me what I was talking about I bought these panels in 2019 as a upgrade , came in a black frame and is a little smaller in size , anyway renogy customer service. I can honestly say that until you try and return something do you find out how the customer service really works... After a bit more discovery, they are just a well funded marketing company with very little after sales support. I strongly suggest you don't support them. Maybe an alternative is Victron or a no name one?
