Having moved house several times, I found that the best thing (besides energy savings) about weather compensation and room optimization is that you don't notice it - that is until you move on to a new house with conventional on-off controls and realize immediately how very poor these controls are at maintaining a stable temperature! Since you can save money and be much more comfortable at the same time, I really don't understand why these systems are not completely standard already. I think unfortunately that's largely due to ignorance and lack of knowledge in the heating sector - many of these systems are not difficult to install and use - so it's great to see that you are spreading the word with your blog.

A great explanation. I dread explaining this to customers. When you explain that you have range rated the boiler and then start to explain open therm controls and the modulation of the boiler. You see the vacant stare looking straight through you and you know you have lost them. I can point them to this video now and they can watch it over and over!!

After a house fire I had the opportunity to replumb my house. I researched "load compensation" and got a system (Evohome/Intergas) which does it. Honestly the best decision I ever made. Plumbers will tell you about efficiency but load compensation makes your place more COMFORTABLE. In other places I used to fiddle with the thermostat every week but no more. Load compensation just makes your home more comfortable by maintaining the right temperature and my boiler just hums instead of making horrid noises. I started as a stupid "I need a 50kw boiler" customer. Now I've educated myself through these videos I see how stupid I was. I never use more than 25kw to heat my home and even in those -2 temperatures last week it used 15kw most of the time, and in the Autumn it is more like 7 kw.

I've got a Vaillant Ecotech Plus 630, VRC700f controller and external weather sensor, VR920 gateway, VR50 Ambisense TRVs and VR51 temp sensors in most rooms. Expensive - Yes. Efficient - Probably Saving money - No idea Comfortable - Most definitely!! A true 'fit and forget' setup that allows separate temperature control for the rooms occupied by my elderly MIL and lower temps elsewhere.

We have a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 38CDi Classic ErP boiler, and currently a Hive controller, though I understand now that was far from the best option (both installed by Scottish Gas 4-5 years ago). We have a 1990 4-bed bungalow, so currently expensive to heat due to large footprint and poor insulation. I'd be interested to hear about better smart thermostat options, especially one with room/zone controls (as I tend to stay in 1 room for most of each workday until the evening). I was initially attracted to the Tado solution, but am put off by them dropping modulation control from the wireless kit.

We have a Baxi Platinum 28 ERP which I understand to be a modulating boiler, we live in a 3 bed semi with 6 standard rads with TRVs and a towel radiator. What solution would you suggest that would achieve per room controls (we work from home) whilst maintaining efficiency. I'm unsure if modulating control module or electronic TRVs or a combination of both would be best. Cheers in advance!

Another excellent video, well done. Funny you should say that about Evohome... I found my own at home asking for high temperatures more often than I thought it should so I limited the flow temp to 50°c and it works a lot better.

At last someone who thinks like I do, I have been fitting Vaillant or Glow worm outside weather comp systems for 11 years now, from their 1st hard wired outside sensor to the Glow worm Systempro controller, what I really like is that it was the only system control package that allowed 3 zone wireless heating and a wireless outside sensor making the install simple and compliant with Energy Efficiency regs, its been brilliant gear and I have had really good help from their tech team. At home I run underfloor heating with no blending pump downstairs as one zone and upstairs I have low temp rads with fans below that run on the same water temp as the underfloor heating in that second zone, the controls are Systempro3, wireless outside sensor, and two wireless Climapro2 room stats. I do use an unvented solar cylinder but both coils are connected to the boiler for super fast reheat times, in fact the high performance shower can not depleted the hot water store as it recovers in hot water priority faster than can be used, I am saving over £300 a year, plus its on from October until May. keep up the good information on here, its great.

I'm about to have my old, broken boiler changed to a Worcester 4000 30kw in my Victorian semi ( 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom), before either selling the property as a renovation project, or having it renovated it and then selling it. The plumber who seems like the likely choice for the job has quoted for the inclusion of an ESI wireless controller (model not specified). I don't know if this is a modulating controller. My quick research appears to show that the boiler is modulating, though I couldn't see what language it uses. I very much like what you have said regarding advanced weather compensating controllers, though I am a bit tight on budget. Could you advise as to whether I should go with the ESI controller or possibly recommend any other control systems that might best suit?

Just watched your video and love the message here. I am so new to this and want to get the most efficient set up that I can. So, I have a Baxi 600 being installed next Wednesday, with a google nest smart thermometer (3rd gen). My aim here is to have maximum efficiency, however I cannot purchase the temperature sensors for google nest so confused how the temperature in the house can be regulated properly via the bus control (I really don’t know what I’m talking about!)? Is this a good set up to go with?

Hi Adam, great video! I've been told my Valiant Ecotecplus combiner's boiler is on its last legs so am considering replacing it. If I do, I will take the opportunity to upgrade to a smart thermostat. My 50m2 one bedroom flat (victorian conversion) is reasonably warm (when the boiler works!) in the 'living areas', but my bedroom is in an extension on the north of the building with only one radiator. I guess when they built the extension in the 60s they didn't really put much insulation in the roof above it either... gets pretty nippy! As a result I am also considering getting smart radiator valves to make the bedroom radiator work a bit harder... Am I thinking too big? If not, which (not crazy expensive) boiler and smart system would you recommend I go for??? Many thanks in advance for any further pointers!

Great video, a little easier for me to understand! I’m trying to get the most from my heat pump (Mitsubishi ecodan 14kw)! Its heating 4 bed property with UFH downstairs and rads upstairs. It’s zoned using 2 nest e thermostat and I have started to use the Eve TRV’s to help regulate each room a little better (fall back temp set to 18 degrees). I feel I may be going too far so any advice welcome.

Solar gain makes an enormous difference to the temperature inside my house. Cloud free nights can produce really low temperatures, so the air temperature input suggests turning up the heating, but the following sunny day creates an over heated house for a slow reacting heat source such as storage heaters or heat pumps.. Not sure how this solar gain can be taken into account, but it does need to be compensated for in my house and surely many others. Haven't seen any mention of this problem, but still researching. Any suggestions?

It depends whether the boiler supports opentherm comm protocol. If the boiler does not, even Nest will apply on/off modulation. Also, the system dynamics can be controlled perfectly even with on/off modulation to avoid oscillations

Hoping you can help. Came across your video when researching smart stats. Very informative except I have no idea what would work with our boiler. We have an Ideal Independent Combi 30 which I believe is around 3 or 4 years old. We have a 3 bed terraced house but one bedroom is not used as often as it is my step son's room and he stays every other weekend. Can you recommend a couple of options for us that might work? I feel like we are always either freezing cold or boiling hot in winter 🙈

An eye-opening video that stopped me purchasing the wrong things, no doubt. Thank you! Please can you advise the best solution for me? Medium-large-ish flat. Worcester 15Ri boiler powering: 10 x radiators spread out. 3 x towel rails in the bathrooms. Hot water tank. Main issues: (1) Night: Heating is off (preferred). But one bedroom gets too cold (drops to 16C in cold winder with the heating off). I use an old-filled electric heater connected to a smart plug that goes on and off every 15 mins. I'd rather just use the radiator but that's wasteful based on my existing controls. (2) During the day probably only one room is occupied (sometimes two), but I have to heat the whole flat. Wasteful. So it means constantly reaching for the thermostat to manually control the on/off. I could use another electric heater and smart plug but this approach is just like sticking on band-aids. What I'd like to achieve: (1) Have a device that controls the heating and hot water (as now). (2) Individual control of the room you want to heat, when you want to heat it. Solves my main issues above. (3) Set a timer to turn on/off the heating by room (or by radiator if there are smart TRVs that do this). (4) Smart enough to control based on other smart automation in my home (e.g. motion sensors etc.), and voice-controllable by-room using Google Assistant, and preferably detect when a window is open to shut off that radiator. (5) Avoid WiFi if possible. I use SmartThings for all my smart home stuff, which works on Zigbee. I haven't searched extensively but I think there probably aren't any Zigbee-based thermostatic controllers and smart TRVs, yet. Overall this point is less important. (6) Preferable something I can install by myself. I'm handy enough. This is the least important because it's easiest to pay, smile and get it solved. Note: I'll avoid swapping out the bathroom TRVs otherwise they will look pretty unmatched. Any help appreciated!

Hi, been following you for a while now, great (if sometimes overwhelming} advice. Coming from an instrument, automation and control background, I'm amazed by the lack of technology built into our homes. Anyway, long story short... I live in a 1990 built four bed detached house and recently had my old (1990) boiler replaced with an Ideal 24+ heat only boiler. It's controlled by a Drayton Lifestyle controller, basic room, TRV and cylinder stats. I'm looking to make it "smarter" and am baffled by the choice of options. I was looking to change to hot water priority in conjunction with weather compensation but with the boiler being mounted south, I'd have a bit of a problem mounting a wired sensor on the north. Now I'm looking into the easier option of Ideal's Halo controller which being load compensating, would give gentler control to the heating. Can I combine the two? With the boiler being Open Therm, what route would you suggest please? A bit of a big ask but any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks, Phil.

Hello Adam, I am having a bit of a difficulty in choosing as smart thermostat for my house in Toronto Canada. It is a 3 story red brick with cast iron style radiators in most rooms. My boiler model is a Slant/Fin VSPH120XEP Natural gas boiler. I am also looking to install thermostatic valves to regular the irregular heat distribution on each of the floors so I am not sure if that might affect the type of smart thermostat I get. What would you suggest as a good smart thermostat. (I already use a lot of alexa based devices for lighting, security and automation) Thanks a bunch for your informative video as well.

Awesome video. I have worcester greenstar 28si with a telford unvented cylinder. I have a hive installed in the hall (no trv on rad) i cant seem to get the house comfortable. (Hall toonwarm living room cool) I was thinking of smart trvs and / or moving to nest. I also have nest smoke / carbon monoxide sensors too. Also thinking of moving the stat to the livingroom and trv in hall? Any advice appreciated

Hi, thanks very much for the useful video. I was wondering your opinion though please - I have a WB greenstar 34cdi classic combo boiler in a 3-bed house. This is controlled by two wired Honeywell programmable thermostats (hydronic UFH downstairs and radiators upstairs). One of those is losing its LCD display so I've decided to take the opportunity to go for a smart control system, and have just invested in Tado (liking the interface & particularly seeing the attraction of being able to individually control rooms upstairs). I've not started to install the various bits yet, but reviewing your video, looking at the manual and seeing your comment below, am I right in thinking that Tado will work fine with this boiler but won't do modulation? Is there an alternative you'd recommend instead which would get modulation please, and do you think that would be worth it over Tado? Unfortunately I came across your video after making the purchase and now I'm wondering if I've made a mistake! Thanks, Nick

This is so so helpful - many thanks! But I'm still unsure on the best way to control heating in our 4 bed house with largely open plan downstairs. 2012 Baxi Megaflo 2 Compact 32 System boiler. WFH so at least one room used most of the time. Need to be easy to use, better at keeping us comfortable and help us save energy too. What would you recommend? Tado? Nest? Drayton Wiser? Something else? Will SRVs help or hinder? Really appreciate all your efforts to educate and improve home heating.

We have a 4 bed house, Samsung 16KW AE160RXYDEG/EU and a Hive controller, recently had Hive TRV's too but since watching your other vid, I've now put the standard ones back, opened them full which has improved our cop :) Having said that it's still up and down (cycling? ) albeit less severe so do I simply turn the weather comp down or is there a better stat that's compatible with the Samsung?

really awesome video. just spent hours researching HIVE and NEST thermostats, but this pretty much explained everything i needed to know. Ive got a Greenstar 30cdi combi. Youve suggested a Worcester control in another comment previously. However, the boiler is around 8 years old. If I ever replace it, i might not stick with Worcester. So would a TADO controller work with my current boiler? and will it modulate?I guess it might not have a physical weather control.

I have just replaced my ancient oil boiler with a Stiebel Eltron WPL 25 ASHP which seems to be working very well - except that I was also persuaded that my existing Tado smart stats would not be compatible and had to be replaced with Stiebels own Easytron Connect system. But in most rooms, there is quite a variation between the target temp and actual. I cannot see how it can possibly be otherwise as TRVs are sensing the temp of the hot water entering the TRV rather than the room temp, and closing them off long before the room gets anywhere near the target temperature. With the Tado system, I also had portable room stats that effectively overrode the TRVs. But I would appreciate knowing if you have experience of the Stiebel system and what can be done about it. I have Alpha HE33 Combi. I have 2x Nest thermostats at present controlling 8x MiHome ETRV's and i'm not happy with them. What would you suggest, happy to rip the lot out and start again if needed. I tend to only heat the bedrooms in the morning and evening to 19deg via a schedule and the rest of the house to 22 deg.

Great video, awesome content, appreciate it being "simple" as I'm a DIYer. I have a valiant and I'm using a couple of Nests for my room stats. I've not actually connected any to the opentherm connections on nest, there doesn't seem to be any guides, will you be doing anything like this? Also, Ive got a heatmiser wiring centre controlling 4 ufh zones. Do these support modulation, or have I effectively lost this now matter how I connect my nests to it?

We already have a boiler that support weather comp so adding the sensor is a low cost addition. Would weather comp be suitable for a property that mainly heats first thing in the morning and then again in the afternoon/evening? Or, would we be better off heating (at a low level) in the middle part of the day, so avoid a large drop in temp. Our current thermostat is not smart (or opentherm) but does allow for scheduling throughout the day.

And I’m wondering if it is possible to replace my programmer with nest or other smart thermostat so I can have more control over the temperature in my house.

Sitting here with lots of jumpers on and a blanket over my knees - with occasional trips to the boiler boost button to keep the house at about 14 degrees (it's a very old cottage with solid walls and old sash windows, currently -3 outside). The idea of having the heating on all day at no extra cost sounds like a fantasy - but one I'm going to try to achieve. Have a Vaillant Ecotec Plus 618 - which I believe is modulating and an unvented cylinder. Any advice on which thermostat should I go for? Thanks very much for the help. My 24 hour timer thermostat (Flash Immermat) has recently broken (no matter if I turn it to full on, timer, or full off it remains on and heating 24/7). Okay this video was a couple of years ago but hopefully the offer to recommend still stands. I inherited when i moved into a 50-year-old house an open-vented heating system with a Worcester Bosh GreenStar i18R boiler and HIVE controller. Not a great combination but I've removed the old last century copper cylinder and converted the system to unvented with off peak electrically heated SunAmp (PCM) Heatstore for domestic hot water so I can lower my flow temp without compromise. However, the Boiler is now 9 or 10 years old so although I'd like to dump-the-gas I can't financially having installed Solar PV and Battery storage. Question is what is the most cost-effective, Eco-friendly way to modify/control of the i18R Boiler and is is compatible with a more efficient modulating control strategy?

We Have a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i ErP with a Hive 2 thermostat. Quite happy to change stat since it is a constant battle overshooting then giving us a draught as the house cools again, so can you suggest which is the best for our system. 4 Bed 1 bath semi c 1905 with average / poor insulation.

Hi. I am having a heat only, open vent Intergas boiler installed soon to replace a 1997 installed Myson Appollo. The thermostat I currently have in the hallway is a Potterton prt2. If I change that to the Intergas Comfort Touch thermostat will that make it work in modulating way or would I have to change my current programmer (Drayton Lifestyle LP722) to an opentherm compatible programmer too for Intergas boiler to modulate?

I have a Glow*Worm Betacom24c combi that is controlled via Honeywell thermostat. Minimum modulation is down to 10.5kW and the MCS heatpump heatloss calcs spreadsheet says my midterrace needs 10kW at a -1.8C design. Wondering if my boiler can do advanced weather comp in any way at all (currently start stop via Honeywell). Rads are fully upgraded to mostly K3s, and "self balancing" TRVs are installed with a system fully balanced and TRVs set to design temps of various rooms (19-21 for me since the 18-22 didn't suit). If boiler breaks (currently in great condition), I'm going for a heatpump after some window/wall work (floors mostly done). This year is about seeing if 55C flow/45C return max can keep the place warm. Heatpump (about 6-7kW after envelope upgrade) right after. What can I do weather-comp wise in the meantime?

Hey, I have a Valliant 938 boiler. I am looking to have have radiators + UFH. I would like to control my central heating and UFH separately but ideally via the same App or smart system. I was thinking of having my radiators on smart TRVs and controlled through an App, and UFH through an App. Any ideas or suggestions on which thermostats or system you would recommend?

Hi, Great videos, lot's of information, keep them coming. We've got a large house built in 1904 with some insulation, but we are limited to what we can do to improve it further. We have a 22year old Ideal Mexico Super RS3/12 which is non-condensing and i would guess non-modulating. The rads all have thermostatic valves fitted, no room thermostat. I've been looking at Smart Thermostats, used in combination with smart radiator thermostats. Given the age of the boiler (which seems to work fine), do you think I can make savings on heating costs by installing a smart thermostat system and would you recommend any model in particular. - Thanks.

Hi I have a idea logic combi esp35 but I have just a Siemens controller I would like to upgrade to the nest. What would you recommend I have 2 zones upstairs and downstairs but a Plummer had told me he could wire them together so I have one controller which I could keep down stairs. I want to get the most from it Thanks you great video

I’m looking at the Tado smart controller for a Vaillant air source heat pump. Would this be the best system for me with having UFH in the main living area on the ground floor but also wanting to keep the bedrooms and other rooms we don’t use as much that may require lower or higher flower temps to maintain comfortable room temps.
