Exactly what I was going to comment as well, especially the Tristars. I love that aircraft. I was a kid then and loved flying them back and forth on BA.

So many planes & airlines in this clip that I have flown on back in the day. I loved the BA Tristars, really comfortable. Tu-154's were scary and the Concorde well what can I say, I am blessed that I was fortunate enough to cross the pond numerous times on this iconic 'bird'. Never got to fly Luxair though...

You can almost smell the Jet A1. Look at all those wonderful and easily recognisable types and liveries! I have many happy ‘rooftop deck’ memories from the 70s, 80s and early 90s. We had the best of it, no question. Great video.

Concorde in Landor livery looked fantastic. The Queens Building was amazing, in the late 70's all of my paper-round wages were usually spent on the bus fare to get there. Binoculars and Ian Allen's "Civil Aircraft Markings" in hand of course! I remember space up on the little "bridge" like structure was always at a premium. We were so lucky to live in such an amazing period of aviation history.

Fantastic piece of aviation history from Heathrow. Such a popular location for so many people and not surprising. Great to see the historic aircraft and airlines too. Too many to list but TWA was a highlight and the TU154 and Concorde.

At the back end of last year the Luxair F50 was written off in Africa: "The aircraft departed Mogadishu-Aden Abdulle Airport on a cargo flight to Beledweyne, carrying four crew members and various goods on behalf of the AMISOM, the African Union Mission in Somalia. After takeoff, the crew informed ATC about hydraulic problems and was cleared to return. After touchdown on runway 05, the aircraft went out of control, veered off runway to the right and collided with a concrete wall. Two crew members were slightly injured while both pilots were seriously injured after the cockpit was severely damaged on impact."

What an awesome time capsule of a film. Back when Lang Haul flights were almost guaranteed to be a 747. Back in the days of drop down CRT screens from the roof and everyone had to watch the same movie, or if lucky enough choose from a range of "radio" channels from the little control pad built into the seat arm rest. I was living in Germany at this time, Dad was in the Army. It's fascinating for me to see what normal goings on where in places I had at that point never visited.

I love this video.... this is back when in-flight entertainment was one pull down screen in each cabin compartment. The only thing you could control was volume that went into twin air-tube (non electrical) headphones using big round dials. If you were lucky there might be a second dial giving you a few choices of music in addition to the sole film playing at any one time. When getting restless go to the back of the plane and hang out with the folks congregating together with a drink in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other. Always great conversation back there where hours would melt away.

I miss the aviation book and hobby shop up there on the Heathrow obs deck in the 90s. And of course there were the local blokes who I think lived up there. Whenever I would be at Heathrow from Canada I’d see the same fellows. They were enthusiasts but I wondered if they were rough sleepers too. Some were like soccer hooligans, lots of swearing, f bombs etc.

Those were the days. Many a happy hour spent roaming around the rooftop viewing area with it’s shops and cafes. That’s when the enthusiast was catered for, unlike today when you have to stand in a field and even then with a limited view. Terrorism security brought an end to all that unfortunately.

Hi mate, the viewing spot from the video is from Terminal 2. The airlines that served in Terminal 1 in the time period you asked was mainly British airways and British midlands (Short haul). There was also Air Lingus, Iceland air ,South African airways, EL AL, star alliance and a few others. Terminal 2 was Iberia, Alitalia, Swiss air, Lufthansa, TAP, Malta air, Air France, SAS, Finn air and Olympic (Pretty much all the European flights) There were many others airlines there, I think Aeroflot? but these are the only ones I am sure of, Hope that helps :-)
