I lived in Shepperton in the early 70’s and used to cycle to Heathrow as often as I could to watch and dream about being a pilot one day…………..I’m still dreaming but I have a car now 🤣

In my humble opinion the VC 10 was the best looking jet ………..and the Bristol Britannia the best looking prop !

Excellent. My father worked fore BOAC and then BA in Washington DC and later in Miami Florida. We flew to London on a BOAC 707 in 1962 when I was 10 years old. Great Airline and a great life. Flying was wonderful back then. "Today?" NOT SO... Thanks for this wonderful reminder. Best Regards

On my family's Summer trips to Yugoslavia to visit family we would usually fly either National or PA to Heathrow. I can still remember being carried up the spiral staircase by a stewardess to visit the cockpit.

…….to be fair it was way easier back then to identify aircraft due to them all having very different distinct designs . These days its mainly copies of the same basic standard two engine layout ! They all look like the 737/ Airbus A320 type in various different sizes ! ……must be so boring being a plane spotter these days 😬

Even worse, I’ve flown on most of em 😲 except the vc10, that’s definitely a regret. A m8 used to pilot em.

I remember sleepovers at grandparents under the 09 approach, way back in the 60s to early 70s. So many prop aircraft still flying, and award for the loudest jet by a big margin goes to the Caravelle. Love the VC10s in this.

Wow! A real trip down memory lane. A childhood visit to the roof terrace was always a real treat. So many different liveries and aircraft types to be seen. Resulted in me enjoying a 30 year career in the airline industry. Happy days!

An engine fire during our family’s emigration flight on a BOAC 707 1971 to Adelaide via Darwin and Melbourne TAA, caused us to land in New Delhi an await the fitting of a replacement engine. Very cool when you’re 7 years old.

Raymond Thurlby absolute quality 1971 and colour Super 8 film. Well a huge variety of aircraft and airlines. Just noted Ryanair 300 Boeing 737 Max order just now. How boring air travel is today! Love and miss the old times not today. Ansett 727.

My airline career began at JFK in 1974. I was offered a position with BA there. I always regretted not accepting it and the wonderful BA manager's offer and going with an American carrier. Super video. I remember those classic red brick buildings at LHR and my first time there in Oct. 1975.

Looked so much less busy. The BOAC insignia and colour was so classy. and to see a National 747, that is rare. It was the airline that advertised by having a sexy American mini skirted air stewardess speaking to camera about the destinations that National flew to and ended with 'I'm Cheryl, Fly me' ( or whatever name!). The tag line inspired the 10cc song 'I'm Mandy, Fly me'

Absolutely wonderful video! Happy memories of my aircraft spotting days on the Queen’s Building or top of car park 2. Thank you so much for not trying to ‘enhance’ the video with inaccurate, over-dubbed sounds. Those of us of that era know exactly what sounds and smells were in the air watching those beautiful classic aircraft 🥰

Memories memories... VC10, B707 B747-200 and last but not least the Vickers Vanguard.... I mis these days when there were soooo many different types of aircraft on an airfield, nowadays it is only Boeing or Airbus.... not so interesting anymore for an old guy.

i lived about 200m from the church spire you can see behind the cargo sheds and often after school cycled up to the longford river gate to watch 27L departures. If you thought that BOAC 74 took a lot of runway then you should have watched the Monday night SAA 747 do Joburg non stop , Only did it one day a week, all the other days it stopped somewhere, and got airborne just aboutt he intersection with the old 23R or block 78 -you could here the tyres thundering above the engine noise. Magic days

The first aircraft (G-AWNA) was delivered to London Heathrow on 22 April 1970, followed by two more aircraft (G-AWNB and G-AWNC) in May and June 1970. However, a long-running industrial dispute, first with BOAC’s pilots and then with the flight engineers and cabin crew, delayed the entry of the 747 into service. This was perhaps a blessing in disguise, as the early Pratt & Whitney JT9D engines used on the 747-100 were unreliable for over a year after the aircraft’s initial certification. BOAC began passenger services using the 747 on 14 April 1971 when G-AWNF flew from Heathrow to New York. By May 1971 this was a daily flight
