This is no ordinary weather - burning wildfires, melting runways, warped roads and overheated hospitals - this is the reality of the UK's unprecedented heatwave.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Major incidents have been declared by five fire brigades including London with 10 separate blazes across the capital.
Temperatures above 40 degrees celsius for the first time and records broken in at least 29 sites across England - driven by climate change.
So rapid are the changes that it's shocked scientific experts.
The mercury hit an all time high at 40.3 in Coningsby in Lincolnshire - a fraction above the earlier high recorded at Heathrow.
This, after the hottest night ever recorded and Scotland also had its hottest ever day.

You can reduce rail temperature by about 3 °C by painting the sides in white (a practice that is gaining popularity here in Italy) , sure the main strategy remains to them to be relaxed at an higher temperature, but, as you said, that can't be changed overnight.

@@js1872 Yes and not: expansion joints are delicate, dangerous, expensive and they reduce confort, so they are scarcely used in main lines, most of the rails are "Long Welded Rails" and they work fine in most parts of the world, the range of working temperatures depends on the alloy, the profile, the locking system, the ties etc. It is not a matter where just one component solves it. Whatever is the range of operation of your rails, you need to pick the temperature that you want in the middle, the one where there aren't tensions, and here climatology and geography play an important role. Then there are the measures that you can take to reduce the heating, as I said, most rails in Italy are painted white on the sides (a practice that Germany started testing a cople years ago) and sometimes the Swiss will go as far as wetting their rails in the hottest spots, this links to the next part: what to do when rails are hot, first of all, how often you check the temperature, but you may intensify the inspections, reduce the speeds etc. this kind of procedures are very important to minimize disruption. As you can see many factors play a role, even if the deciding ones are part of the construction/renovation process and can't be changed, others are practices and procedures that an organization can implement.

To help cool the interior of your house, cover sun facing windows with thick cardboard or if you can get them, car windscreen reflectors to help block heat from getting in. Sleep under a wet towel with a fan or open window helping with evaporative cooling. Freeze ice in resealable bags & wrap them in a damp flannel & use that to cool your skin. Get a fine misting spray bottle & spray yourself regularly to help cool down Drink plenty of cool water - not sugary drinks or alcohol or hot tea as they dehydrate you. Stay safe 💕 from Australia

Why do YOU think that normal long term weather variability is a problem ? Nothing is happening with weather , temperature OR climate that is any way unusual. NOTHING. So why dont you answer these simple questions. Q. At what atmospheric concentration of Co2 does it produce its greatest warming effect ? Q. Does a doubling of the atmospheric concentration of Co2 produce more or less additional warming ? Q. What percentage of the annual out gassing of Co2 into the atmosphere is from non human sources ? Q.According to the AGW hypothesis which greenhouse gas is almost entirely responsible for the dangerous global warming feedback loop ? Q.What volume of the atmosphere does Co2 represent ? Q. Based on the paleoclimate data does atmospheric Co2 levels have very good or very poor correlation with the temperature cycles ? Q. Based on the ice core data does rising atmospheric Co2 levels drive up temperature or does rising temperatures drive up atmospheric Co2 levels ? Q.Do atmospheric Co2 concentrations COOL the atmosphere ? Q.Based on the ice core data do higher atmospheric levels of Co2 prevent subsequent cooling ? Q.Which is the most powerful and by far greatest volume of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere ? Q.Based on the physics of Co2 should there have been more additional warming or less additional warming when atmospheric Co2 levels were 100 ppm lower than now ? Q.Define climate and how it is measured ? These should take you about five minutes to answer lets see what you know if anything.

The Maldives are still above the Sea and Antarctica has been through its Coldest Summer and having another Brutal typical Winter. The Arctic is still impassable to shipping which was repeatedly claimed to be open ocean by now. The Climate is always changing and is cyclical this insane abandonment of fossil fuels is leading to energy bill many people can't afford to pay with the choice of eating or heating faced by Millions.

1. These four years apparently experienced drought, with 1540 & 1541 particularly dry - in both these latter years, the Thames was so low that sea water extended above London Bridge, even at ebb tide in 1541. Three successive fine / warm summers from 1538-1540: the weather in 1540 was so fine that picking of cherries commenced before the end of May and grapes were ripe in July. 2. General warmth over Europe during the spring & summer of 1540. For England, there are several references to a hot summer, with great heat & drought; also many deaths due to the 'Ague'. In this year (1540), there was so little water flowing in the Seine through Paris that people were able to walk across. (The next warm summer of equal worth is possibly that of 2003!) (also noted in usw via Holland .. " 1540 is described in contemporary chronicles as the 'Big Sun Year'; the lower part of the Rhine from Cologne into the Netherlands is 'dry' - it didn't rain over Italy, with Rome dry for something like 9 months. Forest/city fires, with many people dying of heat stroke, heart failure etc.") 3. 1541: as indicated above, another drought year with rivers drying up (must have been quite extreme given that the previous year was notably dry). Cattle / other livestock dying for lack of water: dysentery killed thousands. Wonder what caused the heat back then, no climate change then. The earth does what is wants when it wants. Stop fear mongering with climate change.

See, it went from "possibly someone set one on fire purposefully" to "A coordinated arson spree that was carefully calculated for nefarious means" It would make MORE sense if it was just one arsonist that set one field on fire, than it is to have them be an organised band where they carefully chose specific areas to start fires, possibly remaining in radio contact with each other to make sure the news will eventually capture it all at just the right moment. That's the problem with people who think with their gut first and then carry on filling in the blanks with their mind. What wonderful tapestries can be woven from the imagination.

The rail track was all seam welded about 15 years ago, throughout the network. That’s why you don’t hear the “clickety clack” of rail joins any more. They didn’t use prestressed rails or expansion joints, to save money. If they had just left it alone, it would still be fine! Britain invented the railways, and now our whole network is screwed. I live with this heat and 80% or more of humidity every summer. Last January we had days of 47ºC in Buenos Aires. You have to wear light colored cloths, cotton fabrics, no jeans, no polyester fibers, sandals and drink loads of water, only water. No sodas, no beer, no tea, no coffee. And eat loads of fruits and raw veggies, don't even bother to cook warm food. Don't eat carbs, dairy. Open the windows!! Don't keep your house all sealed up because it's worse. EDIT: For all those ranting about this being ill advice. I would say "You know nothing, Jon Snow". Block the sun with curtains, any fabric the darker the better, towels, but let air in the house. Even if it's hot air. At night take it down and open everything up. Air circulation is the most important thing to keep cool. When you use a fan you don't cool the air, you make the air move, and by opening your windows and creating draft in your home it's a way to cool down the house, even it's 40ºC outside.

No, the highest temperature ever recorded in Buenos Aires was 43.3ºC on 29 January 1957. The highest temperature in Jan 2022 was 41.1ºC. You really need to check your wires then dude a heater can pull enough current to overheat a receptacle but a fan doesn't draw anywhere enough current that that should be happening you really need to check it out before your house burns down it sounds like you can get electrical outlets with fuses in it if you need I put a couple in my house in any place where I knew my wife would plug in something like a hair dryer or a flat iron stuff like that can pull a lot of current but a fan shouldn't

One deeply troubling issue, is the issue of "tipping points" when the weather system reaches a certain point, in how much heat energy the planet can absorb and "sink" without undergoing irreversible change, we actually don't know what those "tipping points" are, but we can rest assured that the way things are going, we are moving ever closer to those points, in terms of temperature of various parts of the planet, like the air, the sea, the land etc. if we pass some tipping point, it may be impossible to get the planet back to cooler times because the changes create even more dangerous changes in a runaway process, if that happens, we fucked...or at the least, certain places will become completely uninhabitable. And because of the complexity of the way the Earth circulates heat, it may not be just places like near the equator, it could be far north or south, we just don't know....yet.

Well given that what's happened in London is happening 30 years earlier than predicted, I'd suggest everyone go nuts clime-change proofing their homes. I already want to invest more in air-conditioning, getting shutters, and in time raising the electrical sockets and appliances for the flood water; I live in the UK. It's going to very hot and dry some times of the year, and really wet other times. Our storms will get worse, so maybe our home will suffer damages on levels I won't predict but I've been saving like a squirrel since my first job when I was a teenager so I might be able to deal with it (When I started saving, my concerns then were "What if the washing machine breaks and I need to fork out hundreds?", now it's "What if the whole roof comes off and we have to cover what £10,000 or so the insurance can't pay for"?). I want everyone on the UK to arm themselves with info on how to transform their homes in as many ways as possible, as soon as possible. Why leave it? Time is on our side.

In the UK the sheer increase of vehicles on the roads over the past 10 years is diabolical, it's so bad that everywhere you go there's constant road works, and most households have more cars than people. That's my observations anyways, and I know how bad the volume of traffic is in other countries so is it no wonder the earth is heating up. I've noticed the increase in temperature for years now, the climate in the UK is nothing to what it use to be, I don't care what people say or what the weather forecasts say, I know for a fact each year has been getting hotter and hotter for a long time now.

@Gamming Enthusiast - it is not. I've spend 4 years in Aus. Not even close, due to a different humidity and climate between different states. I recommend South Australia during the Summer. I wonder how you will do outside? (and this is not even extreme comparing to places such as Alice Springs). Melbourne? Sydney? Cairns at the top? All completely different. So depends where you are. UK is simply not prepared for any of extreme temps - low or high (exception being Scotland, as they also have a harsh winters). Some datacenters in UK, that are supporting critical infrastructure, are suffering too at this point. Including almost a day off yesterday, and asking some of the staff to go back to the paper procedures for a duration of the day (Hospital trust). Hospitals trusts in the middle of London, some of the financial companies and so on - and none of that is getting to news as such. So all in all, the country is not really prepared for it, lack of air cons, poorly insulted houses and offices - that suppose to keep warm during the winter, and cool during the summer. Such a poor infrastructure here to deal with it, and that includes a public transport too (regarding the weather, otherwise during the whole year - is is more or less OK).

Actually hotter on the forest floor and it can still catch fire

It's a heat wave, Caroline. Not a sunshine wave. In high temperatures, shaded areas become hot and dry. This is what causes forest fires.

They destroyed their own environment over decades but lecture everyone else, haven't you wondered why there are literally no large woods left in England .

and private homeowners. since release from lockdown, on my short walk to the corner shop, 3 parking spaces have been put down to tarmac with brick border and gravel - extra heat and rain run off. 80m of diverse old farmland hedge between the old and new bits of the estate has been leveled and replaced with concrete posts and wooden panels. 7m x 1.5m of shrubby shade and bird habitat cleared to let more light in - bet they are regretting that now.

That home for the older people I bet the rent from each person is very expensive to live like that in that home.

It’s been very hot in the West Midlands too. No fires though. Let’s hope the fire doesn’t spread elsewhere. 😅

8 weeks of rain in a row here in NZ, never seen it before. Our water reserves must be maxed out. Mind you we had like 20 weeks of no rain from like November to March, mid April. summer just gone. On upside probably only 2 frosts this winter.
