I thought the scene and descriptions of Thomas in Hell were some of the most grim and bleak sentences I’ve ever read. I also disagree with you a bit on the action scenes, I was very much entertained by them. I wholeheartedly agree with you on the abrupt stop to the “good parts”, as well as the terminology regarding the military and French aspects (although I think it made the book more historically accurate.) “more of a personal problem”, as you said. I was hoping Delphine was a Devil actually, but it becomes obvious she’s not midway through Part IV. Overall, I enjoyed.

Great review! I just finished and talked ablut this one recently too, what a great book! I agree the night statues in paris is one of the best bits of the book, when they leave paris and wall past the statues on the way out was fantasticly creepy. The part of thomas in hell that gets me the most is how its mentioned that just shortly after he dies and goes to hell, heaven wins and forgives everyone there, taking all to heaven.

Yea the whole forgiving of those killed but not Thomas I think furthered the idea of an absent God who doesn’t seem to care much about what’s happening.

I just finished it, loved the characters but about 2/3 of the way through I kept getting lost. After Thomas and the Comte fought I kept getting confused. Is it just me or did you feel that as well?

Absolutely! I couldn’t tell if it was just me losing interest or I wasn’t following. That happened a few times throughout.
