The book: Between Two Fires is a 2012 period piece horror novel by Christopher Buehlman. (www.thriftbooks.com/w/between...)
The booze: Basil Hayden Toast consists of an entirely new brown rice mashbill and a secondary finish in toasted barrels. The result is a bourbon with less spice, and deepened notes of sweet caramel with a bright, light mouthfeel. (www.basilhaydenbourbon.com/toast)

Man, that was a great review. I just finished the novel, and I enjoyed it deeply! As an Orthodox Christian, I appreciated the sacrifical love aspect.

Its honestly refreshing to hear another Christian talk about this book. I feel that, even though Buehlman is agnostic, he captured something infinitely true about the beauty of the gospel, grace and redemption. I kept seeing a lot of readers who were very confused at some of the themes and references to Christ, and I didn't realize how much it resonated with me on a spiritual level until I realized that I had taken some of the knowledge I have as a Christian for granted. Great review! And I'll have to check out that bourbon too.

Thank you so much! I am glad you liked it! I can see why many might get confused why this book is so heavy on Christian themes yet has such a bleak and dark tone at times. I think a lot of people are not used to having to juggle those things sometimes (at least in the United States), but I find it really enriching for my spiritual life. I actually have my first book list video in the works, and I think you might find some others on there you would like, given what you've shared here. Be on the lookout for it here soon.

That book helped me get out of a depressive episode last year, one of my favorite novels ever

I am sorry that you are going through that. I encourage you to check it out. I find that having hopeful and meaningful stories around when going through those episodes has helped me a lot in the past, and I think this book fulfills that.

I finished Between Two Fires a few days ago, and was absolutely floored. So glad to hear a thorough, theological perspective on this.

I have watched six different reviews of this book now, and this is the best one. How nice that you actually read the whole book first! Almost none of the other reviewers bothered to. As an atheist, I found it was the use of magical realism that made the religious moments so good. Each character had a unique relationship with God, too, that was explored so well before resolving. I had the experience of feeling like I was reading a collection of old folk tales woven together to make this story - probably due to the early chapters way of breaking events up. It made the story feel timeless is a great way. Anyway, great job, man. Love what you had to say.

Thank you so much for this comment and for watching! I'm shocked others would even consider talking about it before reading the whole thing. Totally agree about how it already feels timeless.
