Heavy Duty Jeep SportGate Tire Carrier - Install and Compare to a Bumper Mount

This time on the AutoEdits Jeep Wrangler JKU Rubicon build up... Jeepin Jason will take you through the installation of the beefy MetalCloak SportGate Tire Carrier and convert the swing out bumper ends on the Crawler bumper to change up the form and function of the rear end of this Jeep!
It might seem odd to convert from the super strong MetalCloak Crawler Swing Out Tire Carrier over to the door mount but after a few years of wheeling on the setup... I am interested in trying out a simplified way to access the rear cargo area of my Jeep. I had absolutely no issues at all with the bumper mounted tire carrier and appreciated the strength and stability it offered but since most of what I do with the Jeep doesn't seem to require that and I need to access the cargo area a bunch... it was time to try the tailgate style mount.
The installation is pretty easy and kind of fun so everyone should feel comfortable trying this one out. The only heavy lifting is actually of the tire at the end of it all!

One of the many cool features of this upgrade is that you can run the SportGate Tire Carrier with many different bumper options... I just happen to have the MetalCloak Crawler on my Jeep (and love it).
PLUS, since so many of Jeepers use their tailgate as the central part of camping and cooking... the heavy duty hinges and support this kit provides is extremely beneficial.

I did the hinged bumper setup from Metalcloak largely because of your original video. I freaking love it. i also did the license plate relocate kit, and I did an Alpine X209WRA-OR restyle kit at the same time. i used an alpine license plate frame with the built-in backup camera and plate light, so i just cut off the bottom of the metalcloak platemount bracket where the white light goes. it is so clean and functional. easily one of the best upgrades i've made. having the backup camera is sooo nice with most of my view taken up by the 37" Ridge Grappler back there! thanks for the great content, i always look forward to it.

@@AutoEdits The X209 stereo unit is spendy, but it is so much nicer than the stock setup. the screen is huge and bright, it has apple car play and android auto, and a really great built-in gps system. I found the best price on Morris 4x4 using a 10% discount code. i'll see if I can find the code.

I have mostly Metalcloak all over my Jeep. I went with the Teraflex mount because Metalcloak didn’t make one at the time. Just installed the mid width front bumper last week. I like the look of the Metalcloak rear bumper, but I want one with recovery points. If you have any pull with the folks up there, ask them to make a rear bumper with shackle mounting points. Great videos, love watching Pinto enjoy himself.

I have no "pull" over there...LOL but I hear what you are saying. I don't feel like I need a shackle on there... I usually run one in the trailer hitch and that's all I've ever needed.

At the end with those other end caps on the bumper, the jeep looks great! At least in this shot, the angle of the endcaps lines up with the rear flares, and it looks so clean!! Make sure it doesn’t stay that way!

I have the rugged ridge hinge, what I did was removed that rubber tire stopper and sucked the tire all the way until the rubber of the tire was touching the hinge, loosened the lug nuts and went about an eighth of an inch closer then tightened the lug nuts. What you get is another inch of clearance and the tire gripping on the hinge helps stabilize it even more.

I’ve got the DV8 RS2 single action bumper. You get the carrier but it connects to the old tire mount so it swings with the tailgate. Sturdy and functional! Luckily I got it for $200 on offer up.

I've had the Teraflex hinge carrier for 3 years now. Ended up getting the basket for it too. And over the years I have gone bigger on my tire size, started at the 35's, then a 37, and now I have a set of 39's. And the 39 barely fits under the rack but it's been holding up no differently. The JK's rear tub corners are unbelievably strong. That carrier is holding up the tailgate, and the basket, and the tire, and all my camping gear in the basket. Almost 500lbs of gear being held by that corner and it doesn't even flex.

That is a nice thing about the AEV rear bumper .. It not only holds spare water but it is supported by the bumper and is attached to the door so they come out together by simply opening the rear door latch .. Nice video ..

great vid. thanks for mentioning to wedge a support to keep the tailgate from dropping when hinge bolts are removed. My Rough Country reinforcement instruction didn't mention that and i had to realign the tailgate after installation of the whole bracket.

Great install and video as always! Kinda interesting as I went the opposite route. I used to run a Terraflex HD swing arm but swapped to an AEV bumper mount on a Poison Spider stubby as I was carrying more weight on longer trips (including a 13 gallon gas tank) and worried I was overloading/over-stressing the body mount off-road. More piece of mind than anything else, mighta held up fine. I think you’ll be plenty happy with a body mount as long as you don’t start adding a lot more weight than the spare 38 on there.

Yes, if I were to continue and run lots of accessories back there... I would’ve kept the bumper mount because it is so strong. But, most of my trips need a gas can and a tire... that’s it... so ease of use becomes the priority!

My JK came with the Mopar HD Tire Carrier as a factory option, and its been awesome. I love not having to have a separate swing out carrier. Its also adjustable up and down and in and out. I did get some extended bump stops when I went to my aftermarket wheels and tires, just because it firms things up a bit for the tire. Its not required, but I drive a lot of miles on bumpy dirt roads, and I wanted the extra stability it offered. I think you will really like this. OH, and you can get a 'stinger' the slides into your receiver hitch so that you dont hit your tire.

Awesome video! I have the Smittybilt version of that but was planning on going to the bumper carrier... This video answered questions about the MC bumper system for me and now I think I'm just going to stick with the regular MC bumper. Save some money in the process too!

Great video as always! I went to the AEV rear tire carrier after having my stock tailgate extend too far while on a side hill when I opened it, pulling the tailgate catch out of its holder. Be leary of a side hill swing building momentum on the tailgate swing (downhill) because the tailgate catch isn’t improved by the reinforcement of the installed part. When the catch pulls out, the tailgate hinges are damaged and they also damage the body (slightly). Good luck and thanks for you hard work.

AutoEdits It wont be a wear issue. One time when you are least expecting it, you will open your tailgate, it will swing open, and your mind will remember too late....flash, the catch pulls out. It doesn’t ruin the day. It’s just pain.

Hi Jason, I have a similar hd tire set up on my baby’s tailgate and I run a Rear hitch “Stinger” in the trailer hitch mount that extends out past my tire and angles up a bit for clearance. That way if I drop off of a ledge, the stinger will catch the Jeep before the rear tire does (at least in theory it will). Love your vids man!

I have a black one too, and I had allot more paint behind my hinges than you. It was just around the bolt that was light on paint for me. I had no concerns about rust when I did my hinge replacement. If I had what you have, I definitely would have got some paint.

Jason- I read your response. Allow me to articulate better. I watch and enjoy the channel. I’ve added some modifications to my Jeep that I saw here. When I say this video is grasping, I mean this Jeep is already done very nicely, needing nothing. Problem with needing nothing, it doesn’t make for great videos. I wouldn’t change the tire carrier. Feels like you did this mod to get content out there. I love videos of Jeeps being worked on. Unless you’re going to take this Jeep to the extreme (Cummins re-power & 1 ton axles) put it away for content. Get a beater. Show it some love, I’ll be here to see what you do next.

I'm not even bummed that I started with the swing out, it was a great lesson and a super strong option. If I were to stick with carrying a ton of stuff on the back with my tire... would've stayed with it. I think the Terraflex is the best other option in this segment!

@@AutoEdits Yeah thats my biggest enemy, especially on long trips away from gas stations. Always short on fuel or at least the idea that I might need more. However on those planned trips, having a roof rack to carry extra rotopax, and highlift jack have solved my problem, Just want to say love your channel, and have gone alot of the direction that you have with your Jeep, as I have the same Black JKUR manual, and just dropped the 38" Patagonia's on. Thanks for all the info!!

I have the rugged ridge heavy duty tailgate mount and it works Great. No tire shake. Problem is if you have a flat is getting the 100 pound tire n wheel combo off your tailgate. I'm looking for a HD swing down tire carrier

I have the atlas xrc swing out, combined with a tilt tire mount so it slants flush with the back window of my Bestop Trektop Pro. It's not as practical, but it's sturdy. And I completely lose all visibility in the back window, but I solved it with a rear view mirror/camera setup. Sometimes I just like the look of a thing rather than practicality. 😎

If you are worried about hitting the spare coming off of a ledge, then use a hitch extension or bent piece similar to how Wayalife does on their jk and jk wranglers. It hits before the spare would and is structural being mounted in the hitch.

Looks really nice Jason . Trying to figure out what to do with my TJ 's set up . I have a swing out tire carrier that works very well , however I don't like my rear bumper anymore .I also don't like the spare tire hanging on the back and how it blocks visibility . I'm thinking about mounting it to the floor in the back but then I will loose floor space . So I'm at a crossroad on what to do . I think I will order your new set up for my wife's JK though. I've been extremely happy with this so far. I don't even notice those areas and they look fine after inspection. The biggest sales point for this upgrade is if you watch through my Baja trip video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m8-Da6qA09SaeWg.html and every shot of that thing in the background is rock solid... even blasting 70mph down the Baja1000 race course. I'm thrilled with this tire mount.

I have one of those license plate mount from Metalcloak. But I wish they would have made it to fit on the lug nuts that hold the spare tire on. Because not all tire carriers come with a hole in the middle of it. So I had to have my brother that has a welding shop fabricate it to mount useing the lugs that holds the spare tire. If they made it that way in the first place you can use it on all tire carriers. Someone should let Metalcloak no that. Then I just ran the wire to the light around from back of the tire and got a wire plug from the junk yard and hookup the light that way and it works great. then all I have to do when I have to take tire off is unplug the wire plug and take off license plate.

Love it... I went with the rugged ridge support first and sold it after 3 months from being sick of the rattle. Loose manufacturing tolerances. Ran the metal cloak for almost a year and it oval’d out the upper bracket that is made of aluminum. My guess is they had to get around the teraflex patent for steel brackets. Got rid of the metal cloak because it had a lot of flex and failed in less than a year. Good riddance. Finally went with the teraflex and it is amazing. Very smooth, tight tolerances, steel brackets and a thoroughly engineered gate/tire support.

Like the old one, no scress on sheet metal body... 10x stronger. That shaking flex of the tire on there is asking for stress cracks/breakage...

That corner of the tub is very strong and reinforced from the factory. I still completely understand that the bumper mount is still stronger but for what I need, this has been a great swap.

These wheels come at 4.25" backspace and work pretty good.

It looked to me like the tire jiggles a lot when you close the tailgate. I would suggest taking the tire off and adjusting the mount in an extra quarter inch. This will suck the tire tight against the tailgate.

Good suggestion. It sits flush against the mount and doesn't wiggle at all on the road, I'm thrilled with it.

AutoEdits the shop that installed my carrier suggested adjusting it so the tire rests on the bumper, or as close as possible to it, to reduce the stress and possible fatigue on the hinge when closed. It’s a little sticky when opening/closing but I like the piece of mind that the extra weight won’t cause problems in the future.

Now that you have been running the Milestars for awhile which do you like better? The Milestars or the Razrs? I'm really on the fence between those two tires and Cooper SST Pros.

The Patagonia's are all around better... nicer on the road and very capable off road. In my opinion, the Razrs look tougher and gave me more peace of mind due to the reinforcements on the sidewalls but the more I drive the Milestars, the more I'm happy with them.

My very first mod to my JK was a tub mounted tire carrier. I just went the other direction and installed a bumper mount carrier. I found that the latch side was taking a lot of stress and because it is not supported extremely well on the latch side things were moving and becoming more difficult to close over time. Adjustment would remedy things for awhile but it always came back and the loop the latch grabs was actually starting to wear. If that loop ever failed the tailgate would be swinging in the breeze. I agree having to open twice is kind of a pain but I feel more secure knowing all that weight is not dependent on that small loop. I left the tub mount on the tailgate minus the tire carrier portion and now my tailgate closes effortlessly. Just something to watch for, Love the channel Jason and I have a question about your Metal Cloak rear fenders. Do you have to install the exoskins to install the fenders or can they be mounted directly to the body? Thanks. I see Pinto likes to shred stuffed toys also.

Good information here, never thought of that aspect. As for the rear fenders, yes the exo-skin panels are part of the installation to ad the strength you will want from those things.

Squeak city when it gets cold. I have had my MC sport gate for almost a year. I rock it with a pretty heavy 35 (toyo m/t). I have tried to tighten every bolt, I have used PB blaster....etc. it is fine in earnest temps. But when it drops below 50, you will want to pull your hair out it squeaks so bad

No squeaks yet but I actually used a bit of wheel bearing grease inside the hinges and pins.

What size are these tires? The last video I saw for a tire swap was 37s or 38s can't remember which but they made me plan on getting 37s for mine.

There is a better way to lift tires. With the out side of the wheel facing the jeep you sort of dead lift it and when you start go get it up use you leg/knee to lift it into your arms so you dont hurt your back.

@@AutoEdits it's hard to explain in a comment but I used to be skinny and I worked at an offroad shop. My boss showed me this technique so I could lift the heavier wheels

If I remember correctly a viewer from New Jersey mentioned an aftermarket LED 3rd brake light wont pass inspection but I don't know if that's true.

Well made product but the the lugs shouke be pre installed. Your local company's cant really expect us common folk to own a lug press or for that matter ann impacf gun and compressor. I bet they loose alot of business for that. Me personally, I went with the tereflex HD tire carrier. Great vid !

I’m having serious trouble finding a place to do my wiring. They all want $400+ for it and don’t understand what needs to be done. I’ve been meaning to mimick this great setup for a while and the license plate bracket has been the toughest hump. Hoping you could point me to a spot in San Diego that could do it if you know any at all. TIA

I don't know anyone in San Diego... check with TrailRecon... he lives down there. I did this myself with the instructions included with the Metalcloak license plate relocation kit if that helps a little.

I would prefer some of the other kits as a lot of them have stronger inner hinge plates (Inside the Jeep body) that make it much stronger.

What could possibly be bouncing? Adjust your tire so it's as close the tailgate and low as possible and tighten everything up. Watch a little of this video and see how well this thing does blasting down the baja1000 racecourse kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m8-Da6qA09SaeWg.html

The factory hinges mounts on the tub of the Jeep have a very stout reinforcement from the factory.

I still love it and was thinking of doing a new video showing how I made it kind of a convertible and can run my license plate flush without the tire for around town use and then re-install the tire mount in just few minutes. It's great.

The only reason I swapped to begin with was the Trail to Sema trip a few years ago had Maxxis as tire sponsor so they had us all swap to Rzrs and I liked them for a couple years. Meanwhile I was running a set of Falkens on my truck and appreciated getting a sense of how they performed... and then a couple of friends started running the Patagonias and I thought to give them a try as well. Haven't been dissapointed at all. I would like to try the 39" bfg's next but they are REALLY expensive.

This looks cheap and thrown together, MetalCloak should have but more time into this. The teraflex one looks really good Id expect something similar to that from MetalCloak.
