In this video I'll show you 5 very important yet sometimes overlooked upgrades to consider when building your Jeep Wrangler. I'll walk you around the AutoEdits 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubcion JKU and show how and why these top five areas are so important to get the right parts on!
Starting with the foundation of any good Jeep build is the off road suspension upgrade and often times this will include the lift. I chose the MetalCloak 3.5 Gamechanger with the 6Pak shocks and have been very happy with 2 years and lots of trail miles. My recommendation to people looking to upgrade their suspension is to get a name brand kit from a respected company. I obviously like MetalCloak but another local company near me is Synergy and then there's TerraFlex and BDS and lots more. My point here is to get good quality parts... it will pay off for years after.
Then it's the body armor and skid plate protection. I've heard horror stories from people trying to install low end budget skid plates and having an extremely difficult time. My skids were easy to install and are super tough... again... don't skimp out on the protection of your rig. Having good bumpers and fender protection is just a great plus. After skid plates... the most important body armor is the Rocker guards.
Next up is the Tom Wood's Driveshafts I have in this thing... top quality parts! I chose the 1350 U joints which is the upgrade to the standard shafts. I have beaten on them, scraped them on rocks and I'll explain the rear axle damage that they survived in this video. Getting super strong driveshafts offer you the peace of mind to hit obstacles hard and not worry about breaking them.
Next up is the PowerStop Z36 brake pads and cross drilled and slotted rotors. Many people forget to even do a brake upgrade because it is more fun to add stuff that you see. After adding larger tires and a bunch of weight in armor to your rig... you'll need to upgrade the brake system to keep up with that added mass. There are lots of options here and I chose the PowerStop because at $370 they are one of the most cost efficient for the big upgrade they offer.
And finally, just get a Warn winch... don't mess around. Save up and get a Warn winch. It is important to have a winch on your Jeep if you are going to go out and get awesome in the dirt or rocks ... a winch is an important piece of equipment to make sure you can safely recover yourself or your buddy if things get stuck. In my opinion, and that's all I can offer here, get a good winch if you plan to do a fair amount of off road adventures!
Thanks so much for watching!

I use to have a cj5 back in the day. Had a fiberglass body with a Lt1 corvette engine and 38 Mickey Thompson tires. Needless to say I've twisted the rear diff a few times. 2 times in Daytona for spring break doind stupid shit, pulling second gear wheelies and had to drive all the way back to Orlando on the front end. There's an unmistakable sound your drive shaft makes hitting the pavement that no one ever wants to hear. After I welded it like you did, I broke the welds and it twisted again. Finally had a 9in ford rear end custom made. Good times

Great advice in this video. I agree with you on getting the "Good Stuff" and it may cost higher but majority of the times companies stand behind their product and they replace the damage components for free. I've ran MetalCloaked suspension for 4yrs now and bent my tie rod by hitting rocks. They asked for pictures and 2 wks later I had a new one on my porch. Great video, glad to see PINTO is still around and in the videos.

This is a timely vid for me and some of these very things are going thru my head. My priorities have been shifting kinda naturally as i go thru my build. My jeep in storage is probably a good thing i think. First two mods were roofrack and lift, both quality. Want to regear and go to bigger tires but have put them on hold in favor of winch bumper and zeon s winch. Want to armor up and rear bumper my rig before i go to worrying about tires. You are on the money brother, thanks 👊🏻

Paint all of your after market metal accessories like bumpers, rock sliders, axles, lift kit springs, control arms, track bars & brackets with pickup truck bed liner. It's usually black but some box liners such as Raptor has lots of colors including color matching factory paint. Coating your parts with bed liner keeps them from rusting, scratches & is great for normal wear & tear. You need to buy a cheap applicator spray gun but they're cheap. Use about 40 psi for thick coats & 60 psi for thinner coats. Having rust all over your otherwise spotless Jeep is a total eye sore. Use about 80 grit sand paper on all the parts you plan to coat & clean with alcohol or brake cleaner. The better job you do here determines how good it will stick. The better the preparations the longer you won't have to deal with it if at all? Also, coating being applied doesn't run like paint & you don't have to worry about dust & flying debris. Body panels turn into darn near armor plating & has a beautiful color matched crinkle cut finish which can be applied in a fine or course crinkle pattern depending on the air pressure used. Every Wrangler I've seen repainted with Raptor color matched bed liner looks just brutal, tough & gives you the same feeling like the first time you put on a lift kit & big mudders. Scratches are a thing of the past. Great for shopping mall parking lots. I hope my story here inspires someone to start taping & masking up up all the places they don't want coated & prepare to save themselves thousands on a new paint job with something they most likely will never have to deal with again all while turning a lot of heads cause it looks so awesome. (PS.) IF POSSIBLE, Wash the entire underneath like the axles, floor boards, frame rails, skid plates etc. like anything that can rust over time like the inside of the rails & try to cover all sides inside & out. Your pride & joy will look great decades after you do it. I hope that this helps someone save enough money to be able to buy something badly wanted but couldn't afford if they had to bring it to an auto body repair shop.Be careful not to cover the nuts & bolts or you ain't gettin dem mudder flingers off. If you can afford it replace all of the bolts with a stainless steel equivalent & the nuts with stainless nylock nuts & flat washers. You'll away's be happy that you did & your friends will be impressed that you made that decision. You can use black crinkle finish paint on the nuts, bolts & washers, leave them the way they are or even anodise them. It's hard to believe that no one makes a similar vehicle cause these vehicle's have been very popular this past decade.

@@AutoEdits The powerstops are a budget upgrade compared to those big brake kits. They give that edge of safety needed the factory brakes don't have. Once your carrying all the extra weight from larger tires, winch, DANA 44 axles for Rubicons and armor.

Glad to hear that the rear axle demo wasn't as bad as could have been. Love the Jeep National Anthem ad. I have a Unimog that is 11000 lbs and with full locking diffs front & rear. Runs 41" tires and is an absolute Beast off road. It came with the Warn 18k winch. Could probably pull earth off its axis. If you cant afford the good stuff just wait, you'll end up paying a hell of a lot more going cheap, breaking, then fixing all the damage the cheap stuff caused and then you'll go to the good stuff to avoid what the cheap stuff did and now you've paid way more then you would have it you only waited just a hair longer. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, when i talk to my mom and friends about off roading, they always ask. "Cant you do that for so much cheaper?" "Yeah i can if i want to end up stuck in the middle of no-where with no way home with a busted truck." Then again...its rather hard to explain the appeal of something when someone else isnt interested in it hahaha

One thing you can try to offset a price the Warn winches can cost you is to buy a cheap Chinese wireless remote control to operate your winch. I found one at aliexpress.com for $10.00 & some of those small N-size, 12 volt about half the length of a double A get a large pack for a little more than it would cost you to buy just two at the hardware store here at $8.00 each or 50 for under $20.00 over there. Amazon & E-Bay might carry these items as well? The remote control kits that aliexpress. com sells have different hand ✋ controllers so look for the configuration that best suits your style. Wireless range is around 50 feet. The part that the hand ✋ controller operates will fit the solenoid box for your winch & you can hot glue gun 🔫 it to keep it still. These boards have a wire to act as an antenna. I made a tiny hole next to the antenna & pulled the wire through it in the hope that it would increase the reach of the hand units.

Expensive yep .. tires as well friend of mine jaw dropped on my price I paid for one as that twice what she wants to pay for her full set , but I get a phone call her tire fell apart . 4 years I have on mine and pretty sure I could stretch it 2 more , that's like 200 a year on good tires compared to the 50 a tire she paid .

Great vid, and one that people that are new to Jeeps should definitely pay attention to! I think when many people (me included) first get a wrangler, we start to think about modifying it and see parts on Amazon/eBay, think "Wow! That's so much cheaper than the name brand!" and end up regretting the purchase down the road when you realize why it was so much cheaper lol. Basically, If you can't afford $600 JW Speaker headlights right this moment, save up and buy them later, don't fall for crappy Chinese lights that will either burn out in a month or blind every driver that you come across. Same goes for basically any upgrade, just save up and buy quality rather than slap a bunch of Chinese junk on your Jeep that will inevitably fail and coast you even more down the road. Also, a tip for anyone on a budget, watch Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace, you can score some awesome deals. Obviously, some people will be trying to sell stuff that's basically junk, but I've seen a ton of great new and used parts as well. For instance, I got my wheels and tires (takeoffs from a brand new JL rubicon, with 87 miles on the tread) and a brand new, in box Mopar 2" lift for my JK for basically half retail price. If you aren't in a hurry, this is a great way to keep your cost down. You can occasionally find decent deals on eBay as well, but shipping costs typically kill any savings to be had.

To be honest about brakes, I was going to go with the big dollar Wilwood system and went completely the other direction because of the you tube channel. I wanted to show normal people a more viable and affordable option... took a chance on the PowerStop kit and it far surpassed my expectations. no looking back now...PowerStop on all my vehicles, even the wifes VW beetle.

I have a 10a sitting on 37s 3.5” RK X factor. I’m about to regear to 4.88(automatic) braking was horrible it was scary having to think about emergency braking. So I upgraded to Crown Automotive’s big brake kit. It’s probably the best thing I’ve done to the Jeep just with the front kit it stops better than stock. 13” rotors dual piston calipers (brakes from a ram 1500). It’s definitely one of my favorite things I’ve done. But when these pads and rotors need replacing I’m going to see if the power stop kit for rams will fit on it.

I too have to +1 a Tom Woods driveshaft. I had them build one up for a majorly lifted 79 CJ5. I got it that way (lifted) from the prior owner and grenaded 4 u joints. The double cardon joint in the TW shaft eliminated that problem forever. It’s run for tears without any issues. One question - are you looking into adding a supercharger? Maybe the Edelbrock bolt-on? I’ve been researching it a lot, but would love to see if it met your criteria before dropping $5K on it for my 2013 JKU.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 5 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you had a great experience with the Wood's driveshafts like me! I would NOT recommend the Edelbrock unit yet. All of the install stories I hear can't get the thing to deliver on horsepower... so for $6k I'd wait until they get that sorted or go with the many other options on the market.... And YES I do want boost for this Jeep!!!!
@TheGreatGastronaut
@TheGreatGastronaut 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thoughtful comments. I hadn’t seen postings in fora about that issue, just the ECU problems if someone had previously chipped the program. I’ll wait and see what you do. The paddle (Eaton) type blowers like the Edelbrock are supposed to work and fit better than the centrifugal ones. It sounds like reality may differ. It’d be great if you could provide some more extensive commentary on what you’ve found to date. With all the steel you (we’ve) added with the plates, bumpers, winches and other doodads, that already underpowered V6 really starts to suffer. On top of that, good old California has to approve any add-on like a supercharger or turbo.... That really limits the field. Lastly, this off-road application requires something robust and reliable with low complexity, lest one becomes stranded in the middle of nowhere. Cheers!

Jason and others Questions - I'm seriously considering taking the Jeep plunge in the next few months and I'm pondering which route(s) to go Looking at either a Sahara and doing some mods or going the Rubicon route. Sahara is between $7k - $10k cheaper from what I'm seeing online. But if I go with that and then look at mods like bigger tires (35") - $1,200 - $1,500 bigger rims - $1,000+ 2.5 - 3.5" lift - about $1,000 install lift - a few hundred $$ cost to upgrade transmission gears (incl install) - $1,000+ so right there we are talking a good $5k vs. Go Rubicon route which comes w/ a lift (2" I believe) plus stock 33" wheels on nicer rims. Plus the transmission is geared for the bigger tires. And it would all be under factory warranty plus I can then finance that on purchase vs. paying out of pocket for upgrades If I can talk the Jeep sales folks down on price, the difference would be modest at best Can I get your thoughts? Am I thinking things through completely here? Thanx
@ryantepley3662
@ryantepley3662 5 жыл бұрын
Hey George, this is just my opinion and everyone has different opinions about Jeeps so take it for what it is worth. I used to have a TJ....bought it in my mid-20's. It wasn't a Rubicon because they didn't have the Rubicon at that time and even if they had I probably wouldn't have been able to afford it at that time. I spent many years and a lot of money basically turning it into a Rubicon. My family grew and I needed to get three kids in seatbelts in the back of the Jeep so I sold the TJ and bought a used 2007 4 door Rubicon. I did this so that I wouldn't have to spend additional money on the lockers, the transfer case gearing, etc. Based on what you posted above, I would suggest you go for the Rubicon from the get go. Don't be afraid of getting something used either. If you know what to look for and what questions to ask, you can find a quality used jeep with good components/parts and it may already have the lift on it. What you choose can be determined by what you are going to do with the Jeep. If you are just going to hit some dirt roads and what a more aggressive stance/look on the jeep then maybe a Sahara is a good option. That being said, a lot of Jeep people will tell you that they started off just thinking they would take it on dirt roads to go find a good camping spot, next thing you know they are heading to Moab, the Rubicon Trail, etc. doing some tougher trails and they are building it up and putting lockers on it and all that. Obviously the Rubicon already comes with a lot of the stuff you might want later down the road. If you went with the Sahara then you would be spending a lot of money to do lockers, etc. If you plan on running bigger tires then the Dana 44's in the Rubicon will be better than the Dana 30 front that comes in the other models. If you ever go to 37" tires be prepared to spend some additional money. You will want to do a sleeve and gusset kit on the front Dana 44, you will want to invest in some better steering components too.....new tie rod, maybe a high steer drag link, new ball joints and so on. Obviously everyone has a budget, if your budget allows for a brand new Rubicon then go for it. My budget allowed for looking at a good used Rubicon that I could build up from there. Take this video seriously and do your research. There are good companies out there for lift kits and other after market components. These are a few that I looked at for a standard 3.5" lift kit. MetalCloak, RockKrawler, Teraflex, AEV. Those were the four that I considered and depending on what you want to do with your jeep can help determine what brand you go with. For example, MetalCloak and RockKrawler probably built more for rock crawling while AEV is more catered toward Overlanding but it can still be an effective rock crawling lift. If you go 3.5" in lift, then you will also want to invest in good driveshafts like Tom Woods or Adams. I am sitting here realizing that this is a very long answer to your post so I will stop! My opinion is, get a Rubicon! :) Good luck!

@@AutoEdits well, without sounding like some kind stalker, i just want to say some of us smaller channels envy you. Heh. I'm sure part of it is location, i'm out on the other side of the country. I enjoy your videos, keep it up!

Jason, I'm debating upgrading my shifter to the B&M unit you installed. Are you still a huge fan of it? Its a decent chunk of change I feel like I could put towards other things of higher priority.

It was a priority for me since this thing jumped out of gear every once in a while and I'm still super happy with it!

I added it after seeing the video (added the transfer case lever too). I hated how sloppy the stock one felt. The B&M is tight and precise. It’s taken a while to break in and for me to adapt to the tighter pattern and reduced throw, but you’ll never ever again miss the gate and hit reverse. Similarly, you’ll never miss 3rd and hit 5th. The more I use it, the better it feels.

@@AutoEdits Have you every replaced the manual tranny fluid? I've noticed in most cases they are underfilled from the factory. I use the AMSOIL syncromesh synthetic or the Royal Purple Syncromax synthetic fluids. Takes 2 quarts.

So should we weld the perimeter on the diffs as a pre-emptive measure?

It seems like the answer is yes if you are going to run 37" tires and do some aggressive off road activities. Otherwise, they are fine.
