Hi and welcome to my humble farm nestled in the heart of central Portugal!
As the seasons change, so do the tasks on the homestead. One of the key tasks this time of year is cutting the tall grass that blankets the land. To tackle this, I acquired the heavy-duty Agrieuro GeoTech Pro GFM 860 LE flail mower bit.ly/3MRwmM2, a game-changer that has made strimming season much more manageable.
The farm boasts abundant wild grass and vegetation that require regular attention. You'll often find me working around the house, trimming small sections to maintain easy access to the upper gate, garden patch, or around the clothesline.
But for the rest, a bigger and game-changing tool was really necessary.

I started the day by strimming the "leirão da garagem" (garage strip land), also called "leirão das gingeiras" (sour cherry strip land). This area requires careful maneuvering around trees, contouring their shapes while ensuring the smaller ones remained unharmed. The bigger ones I had to deal with the lower branches. I could move the mower's adjustable gear to the sides to avoid lowering down or even hit those branches, but I always forget to do that...
With the garage strip land complete, I moved on to the "leirão da rua" (street field). a larger area with fewer trees, although I continue to plant more. Cherry and walnut trees already dot the landscape, with several spots earmarked for additional plantings in the future.
Navigating the field is relatively smooth, with only a few potholes to contend with, none of which impede the mower's progress. The results are impressive, effortlessly transforming overgrown areas into neatly trimmed sections.
Next on the agenda was the "leirão do poço" (well field), the largest expanse on the homestead. Here, the grass can reach towering heights, necessitating careful navigation to avoid hidden hazards. To aid in locating newly planted trees amid the dense foliage, I installed poles throughout the field, serving as markers for future reference.
Despite the physical demands of the task, I find great satisfaction in witnessing the immediate impact of my efforts. The #GeoTech Pro GFM 860 LE, equipped with a robust 15hp engine, effortlessly traverses the terrain, making short work of even the most challenging sections.

I don't remove the mulch resulting from all this heavy mowing because it still helps to protect the soil from the summer's scorching sun and simultaneously gives back nutrients to the land.
It was time to deal with the 4th field. This is the "leirão do fundo" (Bottom strip land) and it's the longest but also thinner field here at the homestead. It only has olive trees, for the exception of a small orange tree and a passion fruit I planted below one of the olive trees (so it could grab to it).
At this point I was getting tired, but I had to go on and seize the opportunity to do the most amount of mowing possible. So I went strimming the access path to the homestead's upper gate. This part is very important to maintain the access but at the same time to protect the farm (as little as it could be done) for those terrible wildfires.
To all effects, this is a public path, but it still's part of the homestead's property. It's actually the northwest boundary. The materials needed for the recovery of the garage passed through this passage and gate.
I still went for the "leirão do tanque" (tank field), also called "leirão dos pinheiros" (rock pine field), but I actually wasn't able to finish it.
I also didn't manage to deal with the uppermost field ("leirão do cimo") because it doesn't even have yet access for the mower. Still, it's the poorer and rockier strip of land here at the homestead and there's not much high grass flourishing there.
Nevertheless, as the day drew to a close, I reflected on the progress made and the challenges overcome. Each completed task brings me a sense of pride and accomplishment, reinforcing my commitment to stewarding this land for generations to come.
