We were so impressed with the boondocking capabilities of this HDT RV Hauler we just had to share! Our friend Roger shows us his awesome Heavy Duty Truck and how he customized it for off grid RVing. Watch as he shows us his solar install as well as some other great features on his HDT RV.

He reminds my of my Dad who didn't have a high school education but was a really smart guy. I'm not implying tis guy's educational level; the point is what he's put together comes from a lot of common sense and intelligence. I'm very impressed with everything he did. Add in a DRV fifth-wheel and that tells you a lot about this guy.

I'm a truck driver. I've paid for some engine rebuilds, transmission replacements, maintenance etc on my trucks. I'm here to tell you if you have a pre emission rig (2007 or older) it will be a heck of a lot cheaper to maintain and operate one of these trucks vs a newer pickup truck. They are built to last! You will even get comparable fuel mileage. 👍 I also used one to pull my 36ft double slide toy hauler. Seriously, I find myself checking my mirrors constantly to see if it's still hooked to my truck. My one ton? Oh yeah, I new it was there. You can go up and down the steepest longest hills at highway speeds , stop better and see better too.

This was the most stunning shit I’ve ever seen. My mouth didn’t close until after the video ended. 3800 watts of solar, 8k inverters, over 200 gallons of fresh water...........that’s just scratching the service of this infinity boondocking beast. New to the channel and after a few videos I’m just amazed and so happy I found your channel. You and your wife are so down to earth. I need to finish up my masters before I hit the road and see the country we call home and I’d love to meet you both in a few years. Such an amazing community you all have built and willingly share. Hmm that gives me some ideas on future solar project... Im a travel nurse and about a year ago watts on wheels convinced me to buy an HDT running into them in Yuma, AZ, so i bought one with the intentions of turning it into the RV hauler, here i am a year later and im still using it as my sleeping location, because its just so dang affordable while i shop for the RV i want.. Ive done 4 contracts so far this past year living out of the sleeper cab on the road in the truck. I picked up a 2014 Peterbilt w/389k for 17k and had it converted to Motorhome title. Ive been using the APU on the truck for cooling and heating, but i installed a small solar system on the truck also so i can run the a/c straight off the inverter and batteries via the flip of a switch, but I wired the charging side of the APU to the solar batteries and off the semi-truck batteries, so it will auto-start to charge the batteries when the voltage on them drops to low. Im very happy with the truck, its just saved me so much money since purchasing it, before buying the HDT, i rented a single bedroom furnished apartment while on assignment and it would be $2500+/month and had a Ram 2500 Hemi pickup that got 15ish mpg. The HDT, the insurance is much cheaper than my Ram 2500 was a year and the cost to drive the HDT seems like its more expensive to drive only getting 10-13mpg not pulling a trailer, but i picked up a bulk diesel fuel savings account with tsdlogistics and i spent less now drivng the HDT than it cost in gas to drive my ram 2500 i had previously. I have stopped in for diesel and got as much as $0.80/gal off the price on diesel fillups with the discount program, my last fillup after the savings I got diesel for $1.83/gal. Typically i setup my work shifts so i work my 3-4 shifts in a row and i just park in the back of the hospital employee parking and so far at all 4 hospitals, noone has asked me to leave after staying parked for 3-4 days before leaving, then ill drive down to a nice park that i can park at for a few days to a week before returning back to work. Its just been a blessing really on all the money its saved me this past year traveling the country.

What a small world. I met Roger when we were both broken down in Tucumcari NM. I was pulling my new ATC toy hauler back from Florida to Ca. and we met at John's truck repair. Pray you don't have to go there because the bill was outrageous for a simple manifold replacement. He is a character and I hope we meet again. I just converted my 2007 Freightliner Columbia with 58k miles, so I feel much safer than with my dually. I found out the hard way when I saw a red light too late and even with the trailer brake gain on 10 with no load I rolled right through that red light. Never again with my Columbia which is rated to haul 80k lbs.

WOW! What a setup Roger has..and, to think he designed most of it! Absolutely amazing! There's just one thing that makes me very curious: I've often seen the cars riding on back of the trucks ['large cars' as we called them in the trucking industry!] and always wondered what keeps one from driving off the truck deck on the other side of the truck? That's one reason I would never become a automobile hauler when I was trucking for 38 years cross country! I was always afraid of the brakes going out and here I am driving off the front of the trailer on the top deck like Evil Keneval only smashing onto the hood of the truck! Scary thought.... that and I'm afraid of heights stopped me also! LOL. Great video, Jim! I am so happy I found your channel! Stay safe, be happy, love God, and, I'll see y'all in the next video! I’m have Popup truck camper with the same magnum inverter with solar panels. Never knew you could build a solar setup that could run 1 much less 2 AC’s. This is a eye opener for me. I’ve trying to decide if I want to build a crawler hauler RV. I own a 53’ lowboy trailer all I need it a truck. Thinking about driving Jeep in the back and the rest living quarters. For those who say a waste of money have no clue how reasonable you can build this. We Boondock 100 percent of the time. Only issue is being sure of where your going to camp. How many times have you seen a 1 ton pickup pulling a trailer that's too big for it? You can buy a semi like this for about 15k (just the truck, not all the extras) and never be in danger of losing control. I've got an old 96 Walmart Cabover (700k original miles for 4$,000) with 25 feet of frame that will be great for this. I can't wait to start building it out.

Jim said in another video about the fact that the hdt weighs more than the trailer. If you have a dually which does not weigh more than the trailer, if you stop that trailer is still back there behind you coming at you. When you stop with an hdt it weighs more than the trailer and that trailer will stop. I was impressed! He has this rig set up nice! 😎

We started spec’ing the roll up doors on fire trucks after having several doors tore off when an apparatus pulled out of the station after somebody forgot to close them … take heed of my experience when I say, make sure your cabinet items are secure … getting the doors up with items jammed up against them from the back side make if difficult to get the doors to roll up

Amazing cool setup! Did he design that all himself? Who would you even consult to help you with that?

I constant;y watch people spending a fortune on 1 ton trucks and 5th wheels. After commercial truck driving for 10 years and pulling over the Rockies with a lot more weight than the USA trucks, semis are the best way to pull a 5th wheel for sure. The brakes and exhaust brakes wouldn’t even feel the trailer. Heck running an empty reefer unit is 20-22,000lbs so technically it’s running around with an empty trailer on it all day. I do recall driving a Volvo getting around 8mpg with an empty trailer, so it may be slightly better with an RV. My idea is to stretch the frame of Volvo and place on the back as long as straight box possible and build a unit from there but I need room for my motorbike which is where the power tail gate comes in handy, a mini garage under a rear bed for the bike.

Hey Colin....welcome to our community! We couldn't agree more. The safety issues alone were enough for us to switch...and the conveniences are just a bonus! Your setup sound amazing....all it takes is an idea!
