Ever wonder why RVers choose an HDT to pull their RVs? Here are some awesome HDT trucks and interviews with some of the owners from the HDT West Coast Rally in Caldwell, Idaho. See why they chose an HDT and what they tow with them.
********** WHO WE ARE ************************
We are Jim and Kellie, a retired couple living full time in our RV and traveling North America in our Heavy Duty RV Hauler, 5th wheel and Smart car. FYI @ 9:56 a large amount of water is dripping off the coach. I hope it's rain water, but nothing else is showing it rained earlier. Great up front vid. Can't wait to get to a HDT Rally when were let out of jail... oh I mean cross the border to the USA.

Great video. I would have like to see some more of the inside of some of these beautiful HDT's. I don't even own an RV, but sometime in the future maybe 1-2 years from now I will be able to own my first RV and your videos have given me much more perspective of what is possible. I am really enjoying what I see. Keep up the great work you and your wife are doing in your channel.

I'm seeing that you're not the only big rig out there! How interesting! I had absolutely no idea that this was such a big thing! Now, I can't help but wonder about the cost of that big rig! Honestly, if something were to happen to your 5th wheel, you could actually stay temporarily in your rig comfortably huh? This way, you don't have to worry about whether or not your rig is gonna pull your weight along with the vehicle you choose to bring along as well. I do see the benefits of your choice.Also, I'm finding out from your video that this is not such an impossibility for us! I'm enjoying your channel very much! Thanks! Tammie

EXCELLENT ! I don't necessarily need an HDT to pull our rig, but want one. Just a bit gun shy of the costs involved though. Although they can last many years if driven & maintained correctly. They can be expensive. Years ago had a CDL, so not concerned of the driving part. I guess I need to go to the rally and talk to some owners. Are most of these automatics ? many 8,10,13 or 18 speeds ? I learned on a "twin stick".
@SuiteTravels
@SuiteTravels 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Herb....the "want" is understandable 😉 and the costs aren't really as bad as you may think. Our truck is a 2016 and we take it into the dealer once a year (15k to 20k miles) to have the oil and filters changed, fuel filters, lube the chassis and a safety inspection. It runs us about $400 a year. The upfront cost is actually less than we would have spent on a new F-450 😮....and we don't expect to wear this truck out. Most of the trucks that we've seen converted to a RV hauler are automatics. Ours is a 10-speed auto with double overdrive and we absolutely love it!
@herb7877
@herb7877 4 жыл бұрын
@@SuiteTravels A sincere thank you. My neighbor had a diesel pusher and got rid of it back & to gas. He said the maintenance costs were very high. Cost him $6k to replace the radiator & expensive to replace a couple of tires & brakes. I'm a DIY type and would probably save a bunch but engine & transmission issues ???? I hear what you're saying about F450's. Those & F350's are getting in the $80's -$90k range now. I'm still going to look into a HDT & thank you for the reply.

Hi Richard. I would guess we don't see any cabovers because there aren't that many on the road in the US. We have a friend that's researching that right now and wants to convert one because he wants to shorten his overall length.

Hi guys, I’m new to your channel, LOVE IT! I’m a single woman, who full times in a 2009 Heartland Big Horn. I’m loving the DRVs and, may go with that for my next RV down the road. My question is about the semis. Kellie, do you ever drive your semi when in tow? If so, what are your pros and cons about it?
@SuiteTravels
@SuiteTravels 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joy, welcome to our community! And to answer your question, no, I have not driven the semi yet because Jim loves to drive (and I am ok with that!😊), but I will drive it eventually. I do know a couple of ladies who do drive them and they love it! Thank you for coming along and have a great week!! 😃

This is probably a silly question, but my wife hates the Smart Cars. Have you ever seen anyone piggyback a different type of car , such as a Fiat? I love your setup personally, especially the Western Star. Hopefully, one day I will get there........safe travels brother!
@SuiteTravels
@SuiteTravels 4 жыл бұрын
Hey William. We have seen everything from a Smart car to a 4 door jeep on the back. The Smart is used primarily because it's 106" long so it fits sideways on the bed. The others have to sit length wise requiring a longer bed for the truck.

I just retired after 44 + years of heavy haul. I pull my 34 foot Forest River 5th wheel and 19 and 1/2 foot Sanger ski boat with my f350. Both my girlfriend and I still have our CDL's with endorsements and have been contemplating the HDT move for the last year. Unfortunately I live in California and I can't get a straight answer from either dot or DMV on a HDT with regards to combinations and registration as an RV. I know of two people with hdt's registered as RVs in CA. however they purchased them that way and have no idea what the process is. Now to my question do you or do you know of anybody in California that I could use as a resource for my multiple questions? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Im in CA too. I have a CDL and pull my 5th wheel and a boat in combination. The CA DMV manual states the length can be up to 75 feet if no vehicle in the combination is longer than 28 feet 6 inches. My trailer is 28 feet and my boat (including the trailer) is 28 feet ( the boat is a 22 footer), so I'm good for up to 75 feet. I use a SRW RAM 3500 to pull everything. For you, with that 34 foot 5th wheel, you will be limited to 65 feet overall length.

So a couple questions. I’ve seen one of these setups in Red Bluff and thought it was interesting. I have a commercial class A since you guys are a private coach or registered rv etc are you regulated with your drive time and mandatory breaks and do you need to get 90 day inspections?

The short answer is no. We're a private truck and not commercial, so the commercial DOT laws don't apply.
