As a naval veteran, biggest tip for waves that are uncomfortable, saltines. And fruit. Oranges and bananas. Those are go to. Best wishes happy sailing!

Second that. Only thing keeping me from losing my cookies in a heavy sea is saltines. And eating regularly and drinking lots of water. Alot of people just don't eat and that seems to make it worse.

Yes, saltines work well and staying hydrated is key!

I used to eat some salty stuff before flying in weather. It was amazing. Never got airsick. We dropped 100 ft on the altimeter - everything not strapped down hit the overhead and then after a second slammed onto the deck. Not the same as sailing, but after a full breakfast at the Sedona airport restaurant, it was amusing. I love flying. The only time I got seasick was after all night drinking and 15+ foot swells out of Monterey on a fishing boat. It was cool watching the dolphins swimming across the swells just a few yards off of the boat like in an aquarium. BTW, I love these videos. One of my friends is a naval architect. I think I may retire on a boat.

As someone who unfortunately gets motion sickness really easily, yet absolutely loves the sea (go figure), I watch sailing channels such as this (Delos, La Vagabonde, etc) for a little escapism. As rough as those seas were, it looked absolutely magnificent. I'd have been permanently green and hanging over the rail the whole time had I been there in person, but from my comfy seat behind my computer it was amazing! Thanks for sharing the journey with us. It's easy to see why French Polynesia is on every sailor's bucket list to visit. It's truly stunning out there.

Gary and Brooke, It is guest my opinion only that going days through any type of challenge bad sea what ever is totally worth the amazing, stunning bless the atolls offer during nice weather patterns. Being in solitude is heath for us Homo sapiens. It quiets the mind, allowing one to have some introspection and all while absorbing the Fantastic peace, ecosystems and night sky. I can't imagine being seasick and having to deal with it for three straight days with rough seas like that. Thankfully I have never gotten seasick but I have seen many people who have. I would just want somebody to shoot me and put me out of my misery because I hate throwing up I think I'd rather be beat up than do that. You know watching these sailing videos we see the beautiful waters and turquoise and so many different colors and the diving and the fishing and all the good things but you know it has really made me realize that sailing is not for the faint at heart. That would drive me crazy having to drop sails, put up a different one then have to change again and again and again because of conditions. You guys truly are amazing The life you live and what you have to put up with but I'm sure those days when you have crystal clear turquoise and blue waters calm seas make it all worthwhile. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you both May God bless you with many happy healthy and prosperous years to come stay safe, safe sailing

Hey Guys, great video and awesome sail 🫣. That was an edge of the seat production for sure. Three days of the big waves and such prob causes your bodies to say, “what happened to normal”. Great job managing the sails in the rough seas!!! Wishing for you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2024. Cheers 🥂

A suggestion friends: Learn to take reefs sailing in any direction, it is not difficult at all, and in strong winds it is much more comfortable than taking reefs sailing against the wind.

true with slab reefing. not with the in boom set up they have unfortunately

What about heaving to, easing the main sheet and reefing? Easier when waves are steep and aligned with wind direction, and single-handed or small crew.

I would have opted for a visa to stay much more longer, because Polynesia wouldn't get anymore remote or beautiful. Maybe you'll think about visiting the Gambiers, to whose people a German couple fell in love for as well as for the entire atoll from a divers point of view. They left the Sea of Cortez just a little bit ahead of you and navigated directly to the Gambiers, followed by the Tuamotos and the Marquesas. From there they want to get to Chile, imo still having the Gambiers in mind as their (not so bad) back-up, in case the conditions won't favor the crossing to South America in the long run. In case of failure , Pitcairn and Easter Island might be their alternatives for Chile.

Yes, lots of people stay in French Polynesia for quite awhile. There is certainly lots to do and see there. We wanted to explore some of the other remote islands (The Cooks, Tonga, etc) in the South Pacific so decided for us personally it was best to keep moving.

OMG 😱 for you guys ‼️ Another rough few days at sea. Yet.....here you are....The Tuamotu's. I'm curious as to why you only get 90 days to visit this whole area. Not sure how to explain other sailing channels seem to have been in this area for much longer. Curious. Enjoy. See you next year.✨ 🌊 💨 ⛵️ 🏝️ 👙 🌞 ✨

Hey Richard! We could have applied for a long stay visa to stay longer than the 90 days but we opted not to go that route for personal reasons. Some are able to stay longer because they have an EU passport or are married to an EU citizen (for example Delos, Brian is a US citizen but married to Kazza who is Swedish). Many variables & costs associated with this. Merry Christmas!!❤️💚

Hey Guys - well done man - so proud of you Tuamotos - time to blow bubbles and dive - yeeeha. How did you find the entrnaces to the atolls- scary - was Navionics accurate - and I heard SoggyPaws has good tracks and waypoints into atolls- Gazza have you played with Open CPN yet? oh Merry Christmas in the land of the long White cloud...hope One Life gets some cool pressies.
@SailingOneLife

Hey Dirk! Thank you! Each atoll's entrance was a bit different depending on the wind and direction of entrance to the pass. The narrower the pass the faster the current which made things a bit stressful at times. Soggy Paw's guides are amazing and extremely useful. We do have open CPN but haven't used it much. Mainly rely on google maps satellite view and Navionics. Merry Christmas to you from the Long White Cloud! One Life will be getting a couple pressies while we are here!

I have always been told that you should not crank your winches backwards and forwards, yet i see most sailors on KZfaq do this. Can this action damage your winches? Awesome video by the way.
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 7 ай бұрын
Don't think it would cause any harm, those winches are quite bulletproof. Some of our winches were mounted in spots where you can't do a full rotation without hitting the enclosure frame. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Great! One question (maybe dumb one but ?) could you have a remote zoom camera on the mast head with a good polarized lens to help see the bommies (?) or other shallow spots, since looking down on the water has less reflection?
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 7 ай бұрын
Hey Jerry! A camera with a polarized lens at the top of the mast facing forward would be extremely helpful. Not sure if there is one already on the market, sounds a bit too fancy for One Life. 🤣

there are a number of security cameras that are outdoor rated ip66 that are solar powered (battery with included small solar ) some are WiFi and some are hard wired. They have remote zoom and pan (270 degree) with night vision. features and viewable from your tablet or cell phone. From $75.00 to $200.00. Might be able to mount on the spreader.

Hello, great to see you guys again. I was wondering because I heard you mentioned it. But what you said was you had to put a triple reef in your main. I didn't know that you had to reef your main because I thought that you would just have to reel it in on your boom. Can you elaborate why this is so verses just reeling it in on your boom?

Very basic math and geometry to use electronic chartplotters. For paper charts with a compass and sextant, you'd need a lot more trigonometry.
