Hey guys , I used to operate one of those. It’s a 20 ton rough terrain crane. I ran it in Germany in 1969. Had a great driving it on the Autobahn. There is a master clutch on the operators right side near the floor that disconnects the crane from the engine so when you start it nothing is engaged. If you have any questions let me know and I’ll try to remember how everything works for ya.

You guys are great mechanics! You remind me of my dad. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t work on and get to running. Anytime, anyone who had problems with their equipment. They always called on my dad. I’ve seen my dad, pour sweat on the side of the road for hours. Working on folks vehicles that he had never met before. If he seen someone stranded he always stopped to lend a hand. I lost my dad on Father’s Day 2005. And the most thing that I remember him for is his gratefulness to others. He would do anything for anyone. Wether he knew you or not. And if they tried to pay him for the work he done. He would not except it. And the ones that told him that they didn’t have any money to pay him. Which he didn’t charge any money anyway. He would tell them to charge it. :) …. I will never forget my dad. Gone…. But, never forgotten!

When I was in the Army Reserve (1983 - 1993), the Engineer Battalion (CBT), I was with had one of those parked in the motor pool. There was only one soldier in the whole battalion (a SFC), who was authorized to do anything other than look (from a distance), at, or photograph it. Both cabs had a retrofit that placed locking mechanisms on the doors, and the windows were all in place. Memory Lane. 🙂

No, I think any common sense person (although I realize those are in short supply these days) can understand how unlikely and unexpected that was. I had to play it back about 5 or 6 times to see what it was they were talking about, because it was so unlikely, I didn't even notice the strap when it panned to Dave. I was in disbelief when I finally saw what had happened.

Thank you for saving her. We had those to load dummy cargo on are FS ( sister ship) of US Army Supply ship from WW-2 Mr. Roberts) Film fame. We had Stevidor come from a near by Guard unit to practice with the double boom on the FS. They set these cranes on dock to load pallets of dummy cargo on board. I remember watching the operator always checking his swing break in the crane cab. Good times back in the very late 1970s. The blade on front of crane, they used to smooth out area for crane set up. Very heavy duty truxk cranes.

I recognize that crane. I worked for a company back in the 90's that thought buying the old army crane was money well spent. LMAO! That is a mid to late 60's American Hoist & Derrick, 20 ton crane. I think it is model 2380 or 3285. I remember it has a V8 265 Cummins on the main power unit and a JN6I 6 cylinder for the crane. It can be quite noisy to operate. It's all mechanical and was very touchy. I was about the only person that would operate it. After I quite working there. The only time is was used, was for crushing 55 gal steel drums with the blade on the front. The master cylinders that operate the levers, were always a problem. If the fluid bypassed the cups, you could drop a load real easy.

Wondering what your thoughts on WD-40 are. Care to share? I mean, they say there’s 1000 uses for it. Just how many have you tried? Also, what’s the craziest thing you ever used it for? Mine was getting rid of a yellow jacket nest trying to happen in the outside wall of my basement (cinder blocks) by way of of the water spigot at the front of my house. Little bastahds were immune to everything else and I’m allergic. Out of pure desperation I sprayed half a can into the hole they made and watched for 3 days with no visible activity before sealing it up with insulation foam.Did the trick when all the hardware store recommended failed! Haven’t had a problem there since!

I once replaced all the clutches on an English machine similar to this. It was powered by a Dorman diesel for both traction (crawler) and crane. No new replacement parts were available so I scoured every wrecking yard and assembled a group of clutch plates and appropriate centres, reassembled them with a couple having to have new facings and it worked until the boss got in and tried to operate it and pulled the boom over vertical.
