I got thrown onto an old John Deere 770a today. I was shown how to start it and make it move... Then six hours on a dirt pile trying to figure out what everything did. Levers, pedals and knobs everywhere! This was a great video. Kinda gave me an idea of what to shoot for.

Best way to look at it is 'a finishing dozer' with a LOT of extra blade controls (and better viewpoint)...at least, with the new ones. Old ones still had more adjustments...but I don't really think the viewports were any better (especially when you had to have as spotter just to guide and direct you)... Good intro...LOT of experience required...and it's really easiest if you come 'off the seat of a dozer' (as a career) to start working graders...cuts the 'learn time' way down (versus being an excavator or roller or loader operator, first).

Biggest tip is roll blade full forward and as your coming to the end of your row begin to feather the blade by rowing the blade up and as it comes to full up you should be out of material and ready to back up. Only use that for when your moving small amounts of material. Also jamming both joysticks full forward puts the blade in float. Good way to put the blade down when parking and not lifting the machine having a constant load on the hydraulics

the whole world is rush rush and we seem not to get anywhere fast. “almost” everyone you talk to is in a rush. rushing to leave. rushing to arrive. rushing to get it started, and to get it done. rushing to get the conversation over with. then rushing to go talk to someone but then doesn’t have time to talk. and when you talk to them they are either pissed off, in a rush, or they know everythingggggg. it’s definitely not the way to enjoy your work or life. oh you should take it easy.....yeah well i’m trying to go at a nice paise but nobody likes that LOL i’m done rushing. the universe can wait, and if it can’t wait, it shouldn’t put it on others. i feel like i’m speaking for all the people that feel rushed when i say......fuck’m !

That is a mobile office, you could use that in a business suit, check e-mails, run a Laptop, have a cooler inside for Ice cold water.. Makes me want to learn how to run that machine. Man. I took a heavy equipment course and the I had the option to choose grader and I didnt. I got to play in one for a full day a M series aswell and I did like it but. If I picked grader that's the only machine I would have gotten trained on. So I chose Excavator, Dozer and I already had 1000's of house in a loader. Now I just had a job interview and they want me to become a grader operator and thats why I'm here for a refresher. I'm very intimidated with these. In the course though I did very well! I scraped up a road in a rock quarry and then with my windrow and smoothed out the road so I did pretty good just wish I had more seat time in one now.

I am so surprised to see a Ruston Paving unit! I grew up in Central NY and knew Diane Ruston, the daughter of the wealthy family the owned the company, along w/ their fantastical 25 acre lake-front estate on Syracuse-area Skaneateles Lake, “LakeLand”… Diane was a beautiful blonde young lady and a group of us all attended Syracuse University, back in the mid-80s. IIRC, their entire fleet of virtually every type of heavy construction equipment was painted in the baby-blue motif, as her mom (or grandma?) hated the usual CAT yellow…. Who’da thunk that some +36 yrs later, a random YT video in my queue would open up a flood gate of youthful memories….

some may cringe .... but what ive done , especially in slop conditions like that ............... is . as you come the end of your pass what you can do and very easy with both m series and ( 9 stick) as well call them or h pattern .// is roll and lift the mullboard gradually from pitched forward ( scrape ) to carry ( pitched back ) ... then at end of pass while stoped turn your circle drive to opposite direction then re pitch mull board all the way up * ( carry ) .. push both joysticks down leaving aprox 2" clearance from float mode // and then reverse at same time slowly lift mull board /// works very well for eliminating that slop pile at the end .

that's a tough one....I have very little stick time on a motor grader but know that they are the toughest machine to master. everybody always says the grader is the hardest to master and its true but not because of the actual piece of equipment its because of the operator. First you need to have patience final grading is a very slow and precise task you cannot rush otherwise youll fuck up the grade completely, and thats the second thing is actually knowing your grade knowing how things are supposed to look and transition.

Hi, Folks. Wotta LOTTA people will never tell you about graders 'cos they have never 'figgered' it out for themselves is that graders work on the law of the lever. If one front wheel runs over a rock or a bump a foot high, by the time that movement gets to the center of the front axle, it is reduced to 6 inches. By the time it gets back to the blade, 1/2-way to the rear of the machine, the movement is only 3 inches - even if you don't touch the controls. Come back and make another pass in that same track, the movement over the remaining bumps will be halved twice again, leaving you with a bump maybe 3/4 of an inch high. Let the machine do what it was designed and built to do and do what you can to help it do that. The REAL art of operating a grader is being able to set your blade to take the material from where it needs to be taken to where it needs to be placed in the condition that it needs to be in - moisture content, etc. - in the least possible number of passes. There is a lot of skill and experience needed to be able to now how to handle all the different types of materials that will be encountered as well. One of the main hallmarks of a good operator on any machine is that they sit up there and make it look like they are letting it happen. NO FUSS OR BOTHER. Just my 0.02. You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Exactly! Every time I try to explain to a new blade operator, that the grader will always average out with every pass, even without touching the controls, I always get a confused look in return. The few that have understood right away, said it made it less intimidating knowing that. I don't have as much seat time as some other guys, but I have loved every minute of every day I've ever spent in one of these machines over the years.

I've always only laid the blade down when cutting and rolled it back on up when your sticking up a grade or finishing.

I am not an expert nor am I experienced however I will say that the number one mistake operators make is making contact between the tandems and the heel of the blade.

It's easy to do if you're not careful and mindful of where that blade is when you're articulating your turn, swinging the blade from your last pass and sliding the board to get set for the next one at once. I always stay mindful of where the blade is when I'm moving it, though also keeping an eye out for any hazards, especially while turning around after a pass. When I was still very new to the Cat 140M3, I had a guy in a Cat 420F TLB who kept zooming up right in front of me to dump into the material pile as I was turning around and getting configured to take a bite out of the pile. He thought that I'd definitely see him, and while I did see him, him suddenly backing up or turning close caused me to slam on the brakes more than once that shift. We had words about it during lunch time, and worked it out. He didn't do that again after.
