Recently moved and the neighbour popped his head over and asked me not to block the hole in the fence because it’s hedgehog route for the ones that come to his hedgehog house in his garden! Best neighbour ever! Invited me to watch them on his cameras. Amazing!

I would like to point out to those who are unaware that it is not recommended to feed meal worms to hedgehogs, they love them but long term feeding can give them a particular bone disease, therefore I have stopped feeding these to ours and stick to Spike and ready made hedgehog food which comes in tins. I too started off with a home made storage box upturned but even with bricks on it the Badgers upended it & scoffed the lot!. I have now had a purpose built one and not a cat or badger can get into it. Love these little creatures. Nice video & good luck with your little family.

@@jamienewman1488 yeah i heard that they are getting hit alot on the roads. What are they doing to try to help them? Raccoons arent really that spectacular, they are considered pests. There are a ton of raccoons where i live they love to raid my outdoor cats food and knock down my bird feeders :/

WᴏʀʟᴅsSᴍᴀʟʟᴇsᴛVɪᴏʟɪɴ Ah maybe keep the Racoons then, though they do amuse me when they run on two legs haha. To be honest and like a common theme with most animals in decline the prime cause is humans... Housing and infrastructure development is destroying natural habitat. Its now thought that there are more hedgehogs living in the Urban Setting as opposed to woodland so that said people are actively building suitable habitats in the gardens for them. I have noticed that during the Covid-19 lockdown there has been a huge increase of butterflies and bees! Bees are another animal we are killing off with social development, destroying marshes full of wildflowers so people are planting bee gardens, I did so today, I hope during the lockdown animals such as hedgehogs will be on the rise . Seeing the positive impact lockdown has had on the environment I have found myself more caring about it, london alone has seen a fall of 60% carbon emissions!

We’ve got a minuscule garden but we built a hedgehog house out of old wood in the garage last year and it’s been occupied since around Christmas. The house is right under our kitchen window on a patio area so not up the back in the flower border. We built a bug house at the back of the garden using ridge tiles stacked on each other in fish scale pattern and filled the gaps with fur cones, straw, bamboo canes etc, two of the gaps have been rearranged by other hedgehogs and made into tiny sleeping chambers. They’re not always occupied but it’s nice to see the bug house used to the full.

5 nights ago I found a hedgehog coming into my garden. It’s a little courtyard city centre garden so I was very surprised to see it. I’ve been feeding it dog food and leaving fresh water out every evening and so far it’s decided to stick around. I’ll definitely be making a little feeding station for it, and perhaps another box filled with sticks and dried leaves etc for it to nest in safely.

Maybe you already know but I just wanted to mention that these days hedgehogs are much more common in the city areas than they are in the country areas I heard in the past that chicken or turkey dog food in jelly not gravy is what is best to feed them good luck with your hogs ❤

I think it’s lovely your helping the hedgehogs! The little house on the left…they might use it more if they could sleep in the back room where the food is. They are exposed sitting there in the little entranceway. Just my own thought though! My Grandmother and several Aunts and Uncles we’re from Norfolk. England is so beautiful! I was fortunate enough to go to England around 2006. Spent time in The New Forest area, Chester and Portsmouth. Lovely, lovely area! Keep up the good work now! Mary 🇺🇸🙏❤️🙏

Thanks so much for posting this. We became aware that we had hedgehog visitors in our urban garden and came across your video while searching for advice. We built a feeding station out of an old crate, like you did, and within one night - the food was all gone! Next day, bought a night vision camera, and after a few nights of trial and error managed to capture a large hog entering and leaving the station several times during a night. Even managed to capture the sound of it eating. Now to make a sleeping box ... Again, thanks for the inspiration.

Had hedgehogs in the garden every year since they first showed up in 2017, I think lockdown last year was a big turning point in their decline, thousands of people suddenly seeing what awesome wildlife was in their garden being stuck at home! The hedgehog group I joined on Facebook, awesome resource by the way for anyone wanting to help save our prickly friends so can highly recommend joining, was created in 2010 and as of the start of 2020 only had a few hundred members, fast forward to now & it's just over 18k, a, clear symbol right there of how many people have become aware of hedgehogs & are now helping them. Food of choice is tesco kitten biscuits, only 75p a box too & all the hogs absolutely love it.

I wash my visiting hedgehogs water and food bowls every day to get rid of anything nasty that may be lurking there so aim to feed only what I think they’ll eat in a night. What’s left I throw away. From our videos I can see some have ticks and/or fleas so I don’t want them being passed on. I love your hog’s fight. Great video, thanks.

I have about 2-3 hedgehogs in my garden during the summer... the two pushing each other are usually older males fighting for food dominance, I've found if its two young siblings or a male and female they tolerate each other.... try moving the two feeding stations to opposite ends of the garden... also caught the occasional fox and badger in the garden this year. I usually put just dried meal worms out in early spring, since if the hedgehogs aren't about they will go to feeding the local birds, then when the hedgehogs do make a regular appearance, it's a mixture of different dry food + semi-moist + dry kitten biscuits (i avoid 'wet' cat food since it attracts flies, and by late morning it's covered in fly eggs and has to be thrown)

We have just found a family, a petite mum and 3 or 4 babies. They visit every evening. I’m feeding them as they are all too small to survive winter. Currently they have cat meat, cat biscuit, hedgehog kibble, chopped apple and the last of the blackberries. They are creatures of habit, on my patio every night. I was surprised but delighted to see them, we have a large one in the front but my back garden is fenced, I had no idea there was a way for them to get into my back, so I’m very responsible for them now, I don’t want them getting out onto the road.

Used to have Hedgehog and Badgers visit the neighbours garden, they used to hunt for worms, but they built more houses and we no longer see any. Some have said they visit houses on the edge of the estate, but I have not seen them. The badgers dug a huge hole under the neighbours fence to escape when she surprised them, or should I say, they surprised her lol. I heard a noise outside one night and looked out and there was badgers tipping over things on the hunt for things to eat. Hedgehogs stopped coming when they built more houses.

It's a shame but seems to be a combination of roads and garden fences without access holes that make their life difficult...added to that strimmers, slug pellets and so on.
@BoB4jjjjs

@@harryrogers Loads of slugs around here for them to eat, but it appears they have decided to stay in the countryside which is not far away at the moment, just a few streets away at the moment, but they have expansion plans :-( but progress can't be stopped. However, someone bought a house here where they had planned to build houses, he also bought the fields around him, so that will hold them up for a while. Badgers life up on the rougher ground on the hill where they have a lot of cover. Neither badger or hedgehog has been back since the builders moved their machines in. There is to much concrete and tarmacadam around now. Though the builders opened up a drain and took it above ground as a stream now instead of a drain and the tadpoles that are in it is amazing, what they get to eat is beyond me, but there are plenty of frogs and toads around now.

It is so noble of you that you support the hedgies - I do that too. But it is IMMENSLY important to wash the water disch DAILY as well as the fooddish, and to put food-portion just for the night, because it gets contaminated with bakterias and thus you harm them rather than help them. I do wash all disches in the morning and fill them with fresh water and food in the evening.

We have hedgehogs in our countryhouse land, but we kinda like to leave them in peace. We just added a little foodbox (for cheese or something, like a bird-feeder) outside their bush, so they would stay. We also trained our dog that this box is a no-no. (she was too lazy to roam the full path anyway, she usually gone out on the street to "read the daily mail" from drifters) And it took only couple of shots (with blank shells) for neighboor cats to get that this is hostile territory for them. Now it's up to five of them at once, it's a joy of joys watching them roam around the lawn in the evening.

A very pertinent video - like all wildlife at this time of year they appreciate access to water in the summer months. Great that you are mastering wildlife cameras and bringing us the results ! For the sake of completeness, do you think that you ought to add to your introduction a link to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society ? it has loads of information and advice ! It is now over 2 years since its founder, Major Adrian Coles, passed on. Making this video proves your versatility in bringing a wide range of subjects to our attention - many thanks for doing so !

Thank you for this, I have just started using my wildlife camera and found I have a family of four badgers living at the bottom of my garden. I want to try and get a hedgehog or two so will build myself a feeding station 👍

@Tom Sanders Many thanks for this, the badgers are behind a fence in the woodland behind my garden so I have created a hedgehog doorway into my garden so I will set up a house for them.

They're so cute and so noisy. They grunt quite loudly. We had some just Infront of my house, mating with a young one beside them a few months ago.Could hear the noise indoors. It's a mild November and we have a hedgehog house unoccupied and now I'm worried that any babies they had may die. They do like cat food and raw chicken eggs besides the usual grubs.

Really enjoyed your video. I made a hedgehog nest / hibernation box from scrap wood which is very similar to the one you had purchased. I have been putting food in an offcut of plastic waste pipe to try and stop cats eating the food but it's not easy to keep the inside clean. I really like your plastic bin idea as it's much easier to replenish with food and keep clean. Out of interest do you have any details on the camera you have as I'd like to get one. Kind regards and keep up your sterling work 👍

Hedgehog food isn’t regulated like pet food is because it’s for wild animals. They overprice it and can put anything in it. Dried kitten food is best, for a fraction of the price. Less than £1 per kilo, and chicken or Turkey as a main ingredient is fine. NEVER feed hedgehogs mealworms. They are high in phosphorous and low in calcium, eventually crippling and killing the hedgehog. Multiple bowls in different areas help prevent fighting. They are naturally solitary.

Thank you for the pics. I have HH in my garden too. Do you live near countryside? I live near a wooded area in Bexley Borough in Kent & I feed many hogs most nights. I feed wet cat or dog food mixed with Brinvale dried food. It's good to know we are all supporting this endangered species.

Oh that has some nice rural areas, I am in the middle of town, but the gardens all back onto the hog area which is good.

@@harryrogers ..That's what's important . To live near rural areas w/o HH having to cross a main road to reach you. At least govt including HH on its Environment Bill now they are endangered. They want to include a clause to protect their environment. I read this on BHPS website when I signed the petition. Thank you again for sharing your experiences!!

Which camera do you have please? I have just purchased the Riverside woodcraft hedgehog house riverside golden brown starter set, Riverside woodcraft hedgehog eco feeding station & feeding kit and the Riverside woodcraft cat resistant hedgehog tunnel would you recommend putting them side by side like yours or linking them together with the tunnel?

Why don't you use the new house, as there home for nesting, had 3 in my garden at same time, making them a nest box, but I think they are in a lock up garage at the moment, so doubt they will trade down lol. Keep up the good work.

Good morning Harry, great video, what a good idea with the home made feeding station, lucky hedgehogs. Could you possibly tell me which hedgehog house, also which camera you have? please. I have hedgehogs in my garden in Lancashire, I would love to buy a camera to film them, also to feed them without the neighbours cats pinching all their food. Thank you.

Maybe the plastic one would be good as a feeding station and the left one as a nest, if you fill it with leaves etc
