I feel you, a few years ago I had to sell my own Axis A-L2s and my trigger to midi interface and I so wish I still had them now. I play on a Trick Dominator which is great but I think I'd be better off if I had kept the Axis

its really about you an your want an ability an manipulation . i play these techniques stomping the pedals. which means i dont need triggers an editing software to make it happen... you can see bands who make good music like lorna shore do playthru where they cant even play their own stuff . but these people are all using triggers for some reason. so you (like i on guitar) can get way better by editing an using triggers. or just improve anyway you want to play

@@ShawnJonesHellionthey use triggers because 16th notes above 220/230 acoustically become one single note. Not to mention all of the other noise that accompanies the final sound going out to the crowd that would drown that out. If you want the crowd to hear every hit individually when you are at 220-290 bpm you need triggers for every hit ti be heard properly live. Not to mention that a bass drum sample can stay in the mix audibly and perfectly even when there is a shit Ton of other noise going on. This is why you see triggers almost with every drummer that plays anything technical.

Good luck. Just don't abandon your singles. I did only heel toe for too long and my fast singles were starting to lack a bit so i had to work hard at getting them back up to speed.

You don't need long boards or direct drive to do this technique. They can help, but they're not necessary at all. Two easy and cheap upgrades I recommend are: 1) Upgrade your bearings. Get skate bearings. Bones Reds are cheap ($20 for a pack of 8) and make a huge difference. 2) Trick or ACD driveshaft. Trick is about $130 and ACD is about $190. ACD is well worth spending the extra money but Trick will work perfectly. These two upgrades (even the bearings alone) will make your pedals very fast, smooth, & responsive. There are tutorials on YT for changing your bearings if you need help with that.

playing heel toe on longer pedal definitely feels better, much more especially with pedal with Heel-less plate like most long board.

@@jeromed2 You can actually do this technique on any pedal. Sure, direct drive and long boards can be helpful but they're not necessary. I know many other drummers who do heel-toe but prefer their standard short board/chain drive pedals over dd/longboards. You may want to experiment with your spring tension, board height, beater angle & head tension. A cheap and easy upgrade for your pedals that you should do *immediately* is replace your bearings. Get skate bearings. Bones Reds or Super Reds are cheap ($20-30$ for a pack of 8 depending on which you go for) and they make a massive difference. There are tutorials on YT if you need help with that and it's important to figure out how many bearings your pedals use so you know if you need 1 or 2 packs. Also, spending the $130 on a Trick driveshaft is worth every penny (if you play a double pedal and not two singles). Even better if you spend the extra bit of money to get the ACD Ultimate Driveshaft. Those two upgrades will make just about any pedal feel smooth & fast. Even just the bearings alone... Oh, and you don't need triggers either btw. What pedals are you using?

No problem man. Hit me up if you have questions. I just ripped my kit apart and got this thing working great. keep the springs loose, head tight, and mess with beater distance and beater height to adjust for the speed of the doubles and feel.. Beater height makes a big difference in the feel and time between the double (keeps it sounding consistant) beater distance from head will make it easier to play fast if you close, but hard to do slower doubles.

I just got my pedals in, and for some reason, I can't get the slaved left pedal springback to be the same as the man right pedal. They are used, but refurbished (and I have warranty on them). I saw on your vid that your left pedal springback was the same as your right. I messed with spring and shaft settings, but still no change. Any clue what the issue could be? (Example: my right pedal springs back 20 times once released, and the left only sprang back 9 times before it stopped).

Oh, mine are almost never the same, as long as they FEEL similar I am happy. the drive shaft makes a huge difference, try moving your left pedal forward or back adjusting the angle to see how much of a difference it makes. One trick is to not set up your pedals the EXACT same. They should be close, but sometimes my left spring is tighter or looser. Sometimes I may have the beater height a cm or so above or below the other. That drive shaft adds a bit of weight so you have to compensate. Right now on my new Axis pedals the left one stops well before the right. I don't worry about it.

When I have changed tension and position I usually put the beaters to the head by hand and release them, just watch the sway and tweak them to go the same, all resistance canceled out I figure?..

HAHA.. That is a good analogy. Well think of a double stroke on your hands.. Your fingers stay on the stick, but very lightly and follow along for the ride giving control and only helping with the down stroke..

I do use singles as well. I get my settings good for doubles then just figure out how to make it work for singles. galloping is often fixed by pulling the beaters back further, adjusting pedal height, spring tension etc.

Thomas Gruseman I'm triggering first off Second of all with double pedals they are not always on the middle. If your not going to trigger or want super even consistent hits I would recommend single strokes.

They are both great. I am now Axis only. I have the AL-2's and the A21's.. the a21's have a bit more power in them. HUGE foot boards too... They feel very different I would suggest trying them at a shop and seeing what you like but I prefer Axis pedals.

It feels better to me for doing heel toe, but playing in shoes i get more power. It's a trade off.

It's one setting. Lucky for me when you put them a bit closer flatter is better. Although I have been moving them further back as of late. The adjustment is at the top of the spring. You use the allen key/drum key and then just move the beater back but it also lifts the pedal.

For me it was worth it. You can really change the feel of the pedal.

I have only tried on these pedals.. If you set them up right anything is possible. I just know these work.

Definitely not. I do this on Tama speed cobras. It's definitely more difficult with short board pedals though.

I use heel toe on the same pedals works fine and I have size 15 feet haha.

Danmar wood beaters in this video. They are pretty heavy I suppose. heavier than others I have used

@@filippsik5258 I'm actually not of a double bass player anymore, at least not in extreme tempos. Death metal wasn't really my main genre so I left the band. I do play some double kick still but mainly at slower tempos and with full leg motion. My right can do ankle motions and heel toe without problem(I do a lot of doubles), but I always had trouble getting my left warmed up. Nowadays I mainly play with rock bands and a pop artist haha!

you bet, but you will want to trigger them and CRANK the heads super tight... it might be hard to get them that tight in the middle. I have snapped a lug or 2 before and replaced them. I have my head looser these days.. and my springs a bit tighter.

The physical pedal actually. where it is makes a difference in feel as the shaft angle changes

Beater height, spring tension, distance from head, head tension all effect the time between the double stroke.. if your left pedal is hitting too slow you need to adjust.. I can't really see how yours need to change unfortunately without being there. try playing with these settings and it will come eventually

It does save energy. They aren't super high. pretty close to the middle of the drum. I go up or down a bit to even out the strokes. It takes a lot of playing with the settings to get it consistent

Sometimes I trigger from the audio, and sometimes I use the audio in my recordings. When I jam with my punk band I don't use the triggers either.

Rod Stiffington you need to take the spring assembly right off. once you do that and put it back on it hangs over the edge a bit

You are talking about the 2 springs on that pedal right? The metal part above that holds on the springs doesnt have enough room to slip off

I just got my pedals the other day. I got the A21 Sabres and I'm loving them. I set them up with the recommendations you made here in your video and immediately I was able start hitting double strokes. I'm already working on getting the doubles to roll together. I tried this technique with my Iron Cobras for months with no luck but as soon as I tried it with these Axis pedals the heel/toe technique felt so natural. I've been playing for a long time and I feel these Axis pedals have been one of the best drum investments I've ever made. This video was a huge help. Thank you so much for taking the time to post these!

Tough to say. I don't know what you are using. I'd suggest direct drive and long boards for this though. it helps a lot.

I've got speed cobras and find that the heel plate stops my heels from extending below the pedal like he does in the video.

I haven't tried on the coberas, but I prefer no heel block. The demon drives, and Axis re perfect for this.

Slayer i can do the heel toe technique perfectly on speedcobras. so yes you can. i can on regular Iron Cobras and (not perfect every time) even the cheap $99 pdp pedals

Should be the same thing. I like a tighter batter head and looser springs but thats personal preference, lately i have been making the springs a bit tighter and the head a bit looser. seems to work good.

Less than you think. My left is my weaker foot, but it just takes repetition to get used to it. I was able to start doing this in a few weeks of practice. The settings matter more than anything.

I am loving the Axis A21 Lasers.. they hit harder, the foot boards are WAY bigger as well.... They are super fast. Axis sell microtune spring tensioners that you could try out which make adjustents easier.. You can get heavy duty springs as well... You should need that with the adjustments.. Tighten em up, pull the beaters back, move the VDL towards your feet... you will be good to go.

Jamster I have not. Not sure how it would feel. Could always try it. That is why I got the microtune . good thing is once my springs are set i often leave them for months. remove the hats and snare while you set em up also

What about in technique to adapt to the new movement and feel? I’m leaning towards the tricks correct.

I had to adjust my technique for direct drive. They feel VERY light. You almost don't even feel your feet on them. Alot of it is due to the leverage. I'd suggest trying some in a music store. Tricks, Axis, Pearl Demons etc. They all have a very different feel from one another.

beyondbetrayal crazy thing is here in Vegas none of our guitar centers carry anything above the RARE set of demon drives and although they did offer 30 money back guarantee that’s still a big swing to try something and Sam ash said “nope try it and if you don’t like it we can try to figure something out at that point” I laughed and left.

Give it some time.. The first while I made the switch I was worried I had made a big mistake buying Direct Drives. They feel so light and are so fast. the 9000's I have a hard time playing on now actually. It took a while to adjust but once you get used to it you won't go back.. The first bit it feels like re learning how to drum though.

I got the Axis George Kollias pedals. I had to rehab anyway after an cal reconstruction so I didn't notice the change as much starting out on them after 4 months of not playing. Like them a lot, although I had to put some grip tape on as my feet moved too much. Looking forward to trying this technique though. Wish I'd seen this when I was starting over.

I'm gonna be buying an axis longboard with e-kits here soon, pretty stoked.

When it's not picking up it is often threshold, or sensitivity. 7 is pretty low so that shouldn't be the issue. You never stated what your sensitivity is. If it is ok, next I would look at WHERE your beaters are hitting. I raised mine up so they hit higher up closer to where my trigger is... things like bass drum tension make a big difference. I had to loosen mine a bit the other day as too tight or too loose doesn't transmit the vibrations. I use the small axis beaters now, but the wood beaters had some good weight behind them. Where is your trigger? at 12 oclock? 1 oclock? etc... and lastly the retrig cancel i have set to 2... if its too high you will miss hits also.

beyondbetrayal if you read my comment again I stated my sensitivity is as high as possible. 32, to clarify. My head is tight as hell. Aquarian superkick 2. My triggers are 11o clock and 4 o’clock on the left and right bass drums, respectively. I did not think about the retrig. The length of my beaters is set almost as long as they can go, that seems to feel the most comfortable to me. I just am wondering if it’s technique more than external source variables. I think I’ll try bravo beaters and the retrig setting first. Also, when I’m pushing for a new bpm max, I am stressing the muscles right? I imagine you have to work them no matter how easy the technique is

I mostly use my hip flexors/glutes for this technique as my springs are pretty loose.. with the tight head the pedal bounces back then i get the toe stroke. if that makes sense. if you had tighter springs you would feel it more in the shins... 32... sorry i missed that. that should be VERY sensitive.. try playing with the retrig first. mine is at 2... I have a video on here of all my settings and pedal settings etc. if you lightly tap the drum with the pedal does it trigger? mine is pretty sensitive.. i have the threshold just high enough so my snare and floor tom won't set it off... you could try making it tighet or looser as well to see if it changes anything... you have 2 bass drums? i missed that too. I have one kick and my trigger is at 1 oclock or 2 oclock. is it a consistent hit missing? such as the second hit in the double? if so i'd mess with the pedal settings and try and get it a bit harder... my beaters are not smashing the drum head by any means though.

beyondbetrayal ok yeah then it’s the trigger and perhaps sub par form on my part. If i lightly tap the head with my kick it does not set the trigger off. It’s been a very long time since I messed with the retrig setting. That will be my first change. I do believe heavier beaters may help, as well. I will keep practicing. Thank you for your help. The greatest thing about my choice to start to learn heel toe, is that it’s actually indirectly helping my swivel technique 😀

Try a tighter batter head and dial the spring down a bit,. It's more about rebound and technique than powering it out

beyondbetrayal Wouldn‘t that require me to lug my kick drum to every gig though? Backline kits kicks are rarely tuned all too high.

@@zb695 Well tighten your springs then and use a loser head. I pretty much use my own kit at every gig. Most metal bands do where I live. The punk band I play in uses a backline often. I have been working on tuning my head down for this technique though.

I don't use it in my punk band. I use it in my extreme metal band. It really depends on when you should use it. I always recommend getting good at double bass without triggers and doing heal toe first.

I do but not as much. Mostly because I am used to it..... I like something resting against the head.. but I stuff it way more with regular triggers.

You would have to move the beaters back further and maybe add to your spring tension.. Your springs are related to your batter head. so if the head is tight, your springs can be looser.. vice versa.... If you want to hammer this technique it works, but your not going to have the same top speed either.

Thanks for your reply, I can hammer down around 180~200 bpm right now i just wanted to be faster with trying this. My spring tension is very tight and beaters are somewhere near 75 degrees. Like i said if i can hit harder trough practising it will be worth trying but if i need to use triggers anyway for going over 200bpm, i'd like to continue hammering instead of trying to learn this.

Well I don't know your exact settings, tensions, your style, what you play etc.. I am playing well above 200 so I use triggers, I think even single strokes sound better with triggers at 240bpm. You have to be the judge of it. To be honest I do recommend triggers for this technique as sometimes the second hit of the double isn't as loud.

Rod Stiffington a friend had this happen. I had to remove the sticker and tighten the set screws. your not supposed to touch em but if they come loose you gotta. is it clicking? or the beater feel loose?

I didn't even know that there was screws under the sticker. The only thing that is happening is that my left pedal where the sticker was will lower the angle a little bit in like a day or 2..It only happens to the left pedal.

I'd take the sticker off and check.. there is 2 set screws under there, if they are fine just leave em alone

up to you. the a's have the adjustable vdl which I really like. the A21 lasers are great also. it takes a while to go from chain to direct drive. weeks. even months. they feel very different. once you get used to em you won't go back. 2 days isn't even a test drive with em Lol.

learn solid singles first. it's better than heel toe. I wish I never started some days because I neglected my singles. it's also a hassle to have to trigger it all the time. it doesn't take long to learn. takes longer to dial In the settings and get it tight. fast tight singles would be a better goal. also get used to your pedals before learning an obscure technique. just being honest from a guy who plays heel toe. :)

I really wanted to learn heel toe because i cant seem to get my single strokes any faster. 2 perfect example songs of my fastest i can do my fastest single strokes with would be Decapitateds - Spheres of madness, And Kalmahs - Sacramentum. I've been playing at those songs speeds for a while and cant seem to play any faster.

it takes hours and hours of practice man. years of playing. if it was easy everybody would be awesome fast drummers playing crazy double kick. there is no shortcuts and heel toe will not be a shortcut to singles. it works best for 220bpm and above. I'd suggest getting tight singles to at least 220 or 230 before learning it. but to each their own. if you watch my videos you will get it

Bruce Richards just a few weeks. it's simple once the settings are dialed in. my guitar player can do it with the right settings. it took longer to dial it in and get it consistent at Super high bpm though
