The sports science part you mentioned was fantastic. Power and athletic explosion are NOT the same thing.

So very different. I guess it’s hard to tell, without either experience or study. I’m very light on the study and heavy on the experience.

Since you posted this I went from heelflip level 1 to level 3. I'm so grateful. It is all because of your tips, and with all credit, the tips of Dan Corrigan (who doesn't really do tip tricks, they're not even on his channel - they're on Dale Decker's). Your emphasis on how you jump differently than maybe you have conceptualized it before was the biggest revelation for me here. You are good at framing things, like oh, it's different, let me actually absorb that and tell my muscles. Before, I had almost this idea that I was launching myself off the ground, but of course most of your height comes from how high you can lift your legs - depending on what sports you've played this is prob obvious but I just hadn't had the conscious realization. Like in hurdles and high jump, you're changing the position of your body, not actually launching yrself several feet off the ground (usually!). Also, actually calling attention to focusing on sucking yr legs up is a lot more instructive than just "ollie" or "ollie then flick" which is the dense approach my brain was taking (and how it's almost always explained by everyone else) Blah blah. If you still reading I think you'd appreciate Dan Corrigan's most clever tips for kf/hf (IMO) - the physics are smart: put your feet in the normal starting positions, maybe like 50% more towards a normal ollie, and when you flick, don't think about where you are flicking FROM but where you are flicking TO - imagine two spots right in front and below the corners of the nose for kf/hf you are flicking/kicking. If you think about only where you are flicking from, who knows where your foot goes from there, but if you think about where you are flicking TO, all the in between motion happens without thinking about it, and your foot is in the proper place to come back over the board! And it works for both advanced kf & hf. Also very good tip - conceptualize kf/hf as ollie norths, but instead of kicking out, kick down through the nose to those special spots! He does not emphasize the beginning of the trick tho, or how you lift your legs up..Between the two of you I feel like I have a full understanding, even if my muscle memory isn't there yet. The ones I am catching now are soooooo satisfying. Thx so much. I will repay you somehow, prob a Collage deck :)

blah blah ps i have reduced the technique to a mantra i repeat in my head while i practice. kinda suggestive but: "pop suck flick". workin for me so far

I like that point you mentioned that power and height in a heelflip is generated mainly from the back foot because the flat footed nature of doing the trick. I tend to use my nose for heelflips to generate more height and power. Also helps with my timing so I tend to have a delayed flick with most tricks.

Love how you talk about the psychology and intangibles around tricks. When I first started learning flip tricks I just did not have the reflex muscles needed, they are such weird musckles that you take for granted once you have them. Gotta eat that spinach. And it is so easy to get overwhelmed or be lost by the details of what you are supposed to do unless you have some mental tricks.
