Often the only chance I get to skate during the week is 20 minutes in the evening in my driveway after work and the ground is super rough so it chews my board up really fast, so I keep a worn out deck for those sessions and use a better deck for my real sessions, and just keep rotating them through like that.

Was super frustrated with my inconsistency on this trick and I decided to start from scratch on heelflips one day doing all your suggestions (weight thrown back, upright stance, shifting to heels, pop from a full crouch, maintaining the crouch, aiming for the nose) and I had them with such consistency and clarity that I was super surprised. I wasn't even trying to do the foot hanging off thing but when I committed to putting everything together my foot started naturally doing it. I would be so scared that they under rotated because they were rotating slower than usual but they always completed before I came back down. Definitely the most in control I've ever felt on a heelflip. I haven't had them that consistent since that session but every time I try to emulate those steps I get closer to landing them how I had before. Accidently landed a 90 degree heelflip (due to a consistent shoulder throwing problem I have during heelflip flicks) with my feet hanging past the board and it felt so natural with how fast it came up to my feet and how gently it landed. This is definitely the way.

Hi Norman. I mostly skate flat, but today I went to skatepark and tried to do Ollie in the lower part of the ramp. I made several successful attempts, but I had many scary moments as well. It feels for me that it is so easier to slam in transition just because the board can accelerate faster and slip out from under you. Will it always be this dangerous or is it just skill issue? I want to practice transition but this fear and constant feeling of unstable board really bothers me

@NormanWoods
@NormanWoods 4 күн бұрын
@@LameBalsam whole other strategy for that. I’d say start in really mellow transition. Figure out the best time to pop. For me, I have to pop just before I start rolling backwards. Too soon, and I land in a deck check. Too late, and the board falls behind me. Steeper the ramp, the harder to time.

@@NormanWoods Yeah the first try went pretty bad. I just gotta start trying again. I think probably dial in my speed more than just “fast” to get a good pop. Even I tend to rush tricks, I gotta look into what I’m doing further. Maybe start recording my efforts. I can’t always tell what I’m doing wrong in footage but sometimes it’s pretty obvious lol

I had the same issue for years. I don’t know if this will help for you as everyone is different but it changed everything for me. This is for Ollies, Heelflips and kickflips. I usually have my feet just below the front bolts when doing tricks on flat, but for some reason I decided when positioning my front foot to do Ollies kickflips and Heelflips up banks, I covered the first two of the front bolts. And I don’t know why but instantly the tricks actually felt controlled. And like I said earlier, I struggled to pop out of banks for years. Until I tried this. Give it a go and see what happens.

yo wattup Norman, kinda off topic but any tips on learning how to commit to ollying down something for the first time? I can ollie perfectly fine while moving but get hella scared when attempting to do it even off a little curb; I always judge the height by where my eyes are and saw a tip that you should judge it by where your feet are to minimize your fear but still feel pretty intimidated when doing it. Also just wanted to say thanks for your videos they're def the most in depth and helpful tutorials on youtube; I definitely wouldn't have been able to learn how to ollie and kickflip without them and really appreciate all the effort you put in

I'm seriously dealing with the "jumping in a row boat effect". It's not so much heel side/toe side leaning but leaning too far forward towards the nose, or too far back on the tail. When I say "too far" I don't mean a lot, just enough to mess up my trick though. I've been skating for 1.5 years and have a decent stance on my board but I still find that when I ollie/kickflip/heelflip that I will be leaning too far forward and it's hard to get over the board and use my front foot to flick the board when I have too much weight forward. I've got some ideas for things to try next time I'm out but I know it's probably just going to come with time. 1.5 years isn't that long for something as technically difficult as skateboarding. Also I only skate like twice a week and sometimes miss weeks, so it's not like I've been skating 5 days a week for 1.5 years.

When I skated as a kid in the 90's people use to call mongo "sh*t footed". I started skating that way but quickly changed lol. I also find it less stable since you are further back on the board from a perspective of where your momentum is going. You also have now added another foot shift because when you push the "standard way" it's your back foot that is pushing so you can just put your foot right on the tail and quickly set up for a trick, or navigate over cracks and other obstacles. When you push mongo you have to shift you back foot back to the tail and then off the tail as you come in and out of pushing, not efficient and sets you up to be off balance. I use the same technique when skating switch, if you can't push standard with switch don't succumb to mongo, practice your switch pushing. When it comes to skating fakie or nollie, sometimes I will push mongo if I need to set up for a trick quickly because I can immediately put my foot on the nose/tail. So it's about being able to set up for the trick quickly. If I have plenty of time then I will just push standard in regular or switch position depending on the stance I'm going to be doing the trick in. You'd be surprised how much board control you gain by being able to push, ride, and stand in all these different ways. However don't take shortcuts and push mongo just because you're used to it now, use it when it makes sense but most of the time standard pushing in the appropriate stance is going to be the better option.

hey I have a question, maybe you could give me an answer to that: last year I bought a new skateboard, but when doing manuals or other tricks, its not that smooth, for example the manuals are impossible to do... now I grabbed my old skateboard, I could do manuals easily... could it be because of the wheels or the type of deck... now I havent checked the wheels if they are the same or the deck... could these kind of things be a reason why I have such a bad skating experience with the new skateboard?
@Jeffreyketcham
@Jeffreyketcham 8 күн бұрын
It could be the deck, wheels, or trucks honestly. The length of the tail or wheelbase of the board can throw off your manuals. Bigger or smaller wheels will also change your balance point. Lastly trucks are different heights and lean more inward (Indys) or out (ventures) so that can throw you off. The good news is you can adjust it will just take time. You have “muscle memory” from a different setup but you can relearn them on the new board just keep at it.
@NormanWoods
@NormanWoods 7 күн бұрын
I can’t be certain. But, it could just be a bad shape for you. Not every deck shape, truck type, wheel size….etc, will work for you. Sometimes you get a dud, unfortunately. I’ve been there countless times.
