The most popular image associated with kata is that of a karate practitioner performing a series of punches and kicks in the air. The kata are executed as a specified series of approximately 20 to 70 moves, generally with stepping and turning, while attempting to maintain perfect form. There are perhaps 100 kata across the various forms of karate, each with many minor variations. The number of moves in a kata may be referred to in the name of the kata, eg. Gojushiho, which means "54 steps." The number of moves may also have links with Buddhist spirituality. The number 108 is significant in Buddhism, and kata with 54, 36, or 27 moves (divisors of 108) are common. The practitioner is generally counselled to visualize the enemy attacks, and his or her responses, as actually occurring, and karateka are often told to "read" a kata, to explain the imagined events.
In teaching the open handed kata, most styles of Karate start with a series of three, or sometimes two, very simple kata called blocking forms before advancing to five basic kata named Pinan in some systems and Heian in others. By working through this series (in order: Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan (except in Wado Ryu Karate, where Shodan and Nidan are reversed)) the practitioner learns all the basic stances and techniques before moving on to more advanced kata. Traditionally, kata are taught in stages. Previously learned kata are returned to in order to show more advanced techniques or ways of doing things, as beginners do not have the same knowledge and experience that practitioners further up the ranks have. It is not uncommon in some styles for students testing for Shodan (first rank black belt) to have to repeat every kata they have learned from the first belt, but at a "black belt" level, for example, with better technique, power, amongst others. This system is often used for the lower grades as well. The student will perform one new kata and one or two previous ones, to demonstrate how much they have progressed and how quickly they can learn new things.

When you took a break from karate because of corona and then you join in person later than everyone else, then to find out that some lower ranker does this kata better than you so you keep rewatching this sensei's videos so you can be sure to beat that random kid next time well aware that he probably hasn't even acknowledged you :) edit: i got promoted to the next next belt, finally 😭

I think i've finally "got" this Kata, just need to start perfecting it now...... I've recently read Gichin Funakoshi's book about his life and think I am gradually getting Karate and now realise that I am going to have to put a lot more effort into it to further my training - training that will probably never end. Thanks to masters like Kanazawa for bringing us videos to help us, it doesn't matter if people think the styles vary or the belt colours are different, it's what Karate does for you

I see no reason why any heian would be unsuitable for a yellow belt, especially since a yellow belt probably can't show a very good nidan either. I agree that having beginners learning Unsu and such seems a little bit pointless, but praticing heians is always good, whatever your level is !

@alexanony9487 6 жыл бұрын
It's not about what belt level you are. It's the amount of hours of hard effort you've put into practising. A yellow belt who trains 4 hours a week in the dojo and then comes home and practises more is going to be more advanced than the orange belt who trains 1 hour a week.

Been doing Shotokan-based karate for over 16 years, this stuff is basic once you have muscle-memory of the moves. It all comes down to knowledge, application (bunkai/oyo) and technique. All the Heian kata are traced back to one 'mother' kata, called Kanku-Dai. It's a very long kata, and if you do it properly you should be exhausted about halfway through. =)

I remember watching my senior do this. That time, I was 8 and learning yondan. Months passed and it was time for my grading. Got brown belt at the age of 9. Sensei said I was fast😂 I told him obviously, you dont let us rest until our legs dont start to shiver , he wouldnt actually do that I said that to sensei as a joke. And then shit happened. I had to shift to another state, my dad got a job offer in a different state. Tried to find an academy that teached the same form. Didnt find any. 3 years of hardwork gone to waste. I didnt want to start from basic either. Now im 15 and watching the katas for nostalgia. Its sad thinking that had I not moved to another place, by now I could have been a black belt.

This is the Shotokan version of the kata called Heian Godan. But close to all the traditional style practice this kata (called Pinan Godan in all other styles). Of the biggest karate styles in the world: Shitō-Ryū, Wadō-Ryū and Shotokan practice the Pinan/Heian katas. Shotokan, Wadō-Ryū and Shitō-Ryū are by far the biggest styles in the world so you should be able to find a dojo of one of them near you. Shorin-Ryū is a traditional style that is somewhat big in the US, that also practice the Pinan/Heian katas. Even Kyokushin trains their adaption of shotokans Heian katas. I know there is a lot of Americanised karate in the US. But if you actually find a traditional Japanese or Okinawan style you are very likely to be training the Pinan/Heian katas. Depending on the quality of your former Dojo, you should be able to have your previous belt recognised in their organisation within half a year to a year, or be able to progress very quickly. As the differences between Shotokan, Wadō-Ryū, Shitō-Ryū, Shorin-Ryū are small and they are all closely related. So you should be able to adapt very quickly. Gōjū-Ryū and Uechi-Ryū are among the bigger traditional karate styles that will not train the Pinan/Heian katas. instead train Naha-te lineage of katas. Many Americanised styles will train katas the made up themselves.
