What an utterly charming film, I'm in awe. Everyone is sweet and understanding and caring with one another. This healed something in me, I had several expectations throughout about how the characters would react (negatively) but instead they always found a caring solution. So beautiful.

I read the book as a child, then spent decades dreaming the dream. Now at 74 years of age, I understand Grandfather. A lovely evolution in the lives of these characters, including me. (Less graciously, a movie with Shirley Temple as Heidi is sick, sick, sick.) Thank you, Johanna Spyri.

Why is Temple's Heidi "sick, sick sick"?
@susanelainesanner
@susanelainesanner 10 ай бұрын
@@villanelle8888 A few actors become so exclusively known for endearing - or otherwise - traits of their own that any role they play oozes with that trait. Think of Marilyn Monroe, perhaps. Or Bob Hope. Shirley Temple is among that unfortunate group of actors. With Marilyn Monroe, it's sex poured over her roles. In the movies of Bob Hope, it's yuck-it-up humor. Little Shirley Temple poured sugar, sugar, and more sugar over Heidi. Had the original story of Heidi been written in the genre of the young Shirley Temple, it would never have become a classic. Thank heavens for the talent and integrity of Johanna Spyri.

Listening to the music while watching this movie, I can capture some of the flavor maestro John Williams used in his later works. Sometimes I hear the flavor of E.T. The Extraterrestrial, Star Wars, Hook, and some Jurassic Park in there. But that's how a great composer works, he carries his style with him with every music score he makes.

This was the television adaptation of "Heidi" that, through no fault of its own, became embroiled in a U.S. broadcasting brouhaha known to this day as the "Heidi Bowl." On Sunday, November 17, 1968, NBC was scheduled to begin airing this movie at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, following coverage of a National Football League game between the New York Jets and Oakland Raiders. The game ran long; however, with the Jets leading the Raiders, 32-29, NBC broke away to begin this movie on schedule. During the unseen remaining minute of play, Oakland managed to score two touchdowns, and ended up beating New York, 43-32. Outraged football fans inundated NBC switchboards. The network expressed regret, saying it had intended to stay with the game until it ended, and blaming a series of miscommunications for the gaffe. A result of this fiasco is that National Football League television contracts require games to be televised in their entirety in the markets of the two teams. 😎
@johnoconnor6356
@johnoconnor6356 Жыл бұрын
The last minute of the football game was seen by those who were at the game, and by those in the western half of the country, where this did not interfere with the game on TV. It was toward the end of the movie that they ran the scroll revealing the outcome of the game, by which point that most of the audience watching the game had turned off their TV sets, and the only audience watching by that point were those who were looking forward to the movie, and didn't really care who won the game.

Thank you for this backstory. I remember waiting for this movie to come on. We were all ready for bed and staying up late to watch this. It was a lovely family movie to watch together. Not much concern about families in 2023.

@@johnoconnor6356 NBC switched the feed in the East Coast from the end of the Jets-Raiders game to the beginning of 'Heidi', the movie had been heavily promoted in the weeks leading up, & back then, most football games were completed before the Sunday night 'primetime' slot, but the Jets-Raiders game ran extra-long because of numerous stoppages, penalties, injury timeouts, not to mention it was a high-scoring affair, all of which caused the game to run past the 7 pm time slot, where 'Heidi' was to begin. NBC did plan at the last minute to keep the game on 1st & then start 'Heidi', but lack of communications prompted the decision to cut away from the last minute of the game & go ahead with 'Heidi', & thus fans who were watching the game on the East Coast missed the ending( the Raiders scored two touchdowns in 9 seconds while fans in the East did not see it happen since NBC had already switched over to 'Heidi' ). The switchboards were lit up with folks upset the game had been cut away before the ending. NBC eventually apologized, but the damage had been done. Henceforth, sporting events are now shown in their entirety if they happen to run into the start of the Sunday 'primetime' schedule, although now NBC itself has the Sunday Night games on the schedule.

The Jets/Raiders 2023 regular season game brought me here, because Jennifer Edwards was shown, before the game, recalling that Heidi interrupted that Jets/Raiders 1968 regular season game.👍

Although I like the version with Shirley Temple, I do think this version is much better in many ways.

I saw the first minute of this movie when it first aired. Then I realized it wasn't a commercial and went to put the Jets' game on the radio. A few decades later,Jennifer Edwards was on a plane on which Joe Namath was also a passenger.
