#Porsche356 #356ColdStart #Porsche Watch as we do a Cold Start on our 1958 Porsche 356 A Cab after not running for several weeks. This is an original Porsche 356A car (not a replica, or a speedster). It isn’t difficult, but with the carburetors completely dry and using the original fuel pump, it can take up to a minute of cranking to start. This is an important step as it lubricates the engine with a minimum of load on the internal rotary bits. We have an Optima 6V battery installed that we keep on a Battery Tender so it is always fully charged and cycled. The starter is in good shape and had its shaft bushing replaced the last time we replaced the clutch a few years ago.
After the car is running, we go for a nice little ride on some of the back roads here in Colorado. I try to get all the cars out at least once a month weather permitting during the winter to keep them fresh.
We hope you enjoyed this little Cold Start and Drive video. If you did, please give it a “Thumbs up” and Subscribe to Heidi and Franny’s Garage for more videos to come. Also, click the little “Bell” by the Subscribe button to get notified when we release new videos. Video releases are currently on Saturdays in the United States.

awesome vehicle must be a real treat to ride around in that Porsche even if its just a short ride to keep the engine going. I love a lady that appreciates a vintage car and knows how to handle it behind the wheel. Thank you hope to see more videos with some car revving.

Love your car and how you two show it off. Had a 66 VW in my late teens lasted ten years two crashes and two engines. Those were the days of great simple and reliable cars on a budget. The Porsche was just a dream back then. Wonderful to relive some of my early days and dreams. Thanks again

Thanks! That car is really special. If I could have picked out a 356 new, that is exactly what I would have bought. I love the "A" cars, T2 (1958), has to be ivroy with a red interior. A "Normal" ("Damen" German for lady) because the Normal, while only being 60hp, has 80ft-lbs ot torque and the "S" makes its extra 15hp in the upper RPM. So the Normal is easier to drive and better around town and tight roads in the mountains. ...And of course, the Cabriolet with its padded top and big back window. The Speedster had no crank windows and no padding anywhere - it just wasn't a GT car. The Convertible D was a little better, but the Cabs were the top of the line. I could go on and on... I'm sure I will ;) Franny

Hi Franny, Enjoying watching your videos here in New Zealand and crikey you have some nice cars. I would like to suggest a please start the engine in neutral with foot off the clutch, if foot is held on the clutch pedal it is very hard on the crankshaft thrust bearings and crankshaft journel due no/low oil supplied while cranking verse high pressure from the clutch pressure plate.

Actually, I just started the car last night and moved it for my next video and the starter was barely even warm. Starting and stopping them is a bit worse and tougher on the solenoid... The next 356 video I will be installing a relay for the ignition switch which will help protect the ignition switch. That is a part I don't want to burn up! Thanks for watching! Franny

Ah I see, well she's a credit to her keepers. Glad she fired up in the end, I was willing her too, hahahha. Always good to check the engine bay for rodents, my bikes often sit for a few months over winter, too much salt on the roads. So I check too, I've known people's bikes not start post winter, as rodents (mice), have nested in the engine area, and gnawed through the wiring lomb!
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 7 жыл бұрын
+steffydog1 yes. It's good advice about checking for rodents and we do. We do get them, but the lifts help by elevating the car off the ground. It would be very hard for them to climb up the slippery surface (I am sure they would find a way though). We try to at least start the cars once a month and run around a bit even if just through our neighbourhood. This helps the possibility of nests and it also is better for the car. If keeps your seals moist too (now, just starting the car is a whole different topic.). You have to get the engine warm. Heidi

Beautiful car!!! Now pre-oiling the engine is not a bad idea but not necessary if you use a good grade oil and the car has only be sitting a couple of months as she mentioned. The bearings are what you're concerned about. Further, that engine should have popped off before all the cranking but I'm not as familiar with the fuel system in this car. My classic pops off after a few rollovers after sitting a month or so!!!

Really great starting top, I have the same issue with my 63. 356 in fact, I tend to pop a cap full of petrol down Each carburettor and it starts almost instantly! Regards Peter
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, first off, I want to thank you, I appreciate your thoughts, but in this case, I would not recommend doing the petrol trick. I hope you have a fire extinguisher nearby for your own engine, because starting it with all that extra gas could potentially cause a carburetor fire. I have seen people do this trick in the past, but as Franny said before, it is best to wait on the filling of the carburetors to make sure that the engine has plenty of time to have the oil flowing through it before it starts running. If you want an instant start for your car, probably the best option is an electric fuel pump or a manual primer pump. Thanks again for your comment. Love to see your '63 someday. Heidi

What I do is grind the gear off an old distributer, like an 050, and then put a drill on the end and spin that, this lubricates the engine without turning it over. you might consider a spritz of ether and or a spray bottle with a little gas and 2 stroke pre mix, all it does is lubricate stuff.

Regarding the old carbs, lines and seals: Do you use the new gas with ethanol? Are the valve seats hardened to prevent damage from the lack of lead? Do you use Sta-Bil in your gas since the car sits so long between drives?

Hi Charles, We usually do drive the car once a month or so in the winter, but we had a stretch of yucky weather and Colorado just switched away from gravel to salt. Not sure which is worst... It just got away from us so I thought a drive was in order. I only need to start the car like that a couple times a year. So, the car is a family car and has been in Heidi's family since 1961! We need to do an intro video on the car soon. It is amazing to drive - even today. Just love that thing! Thanks for the comment! Franny

What's the oil light? What does it tell you if it's on or off? Also, did you do anything a minute into the motor turning over to get it to fire or did it really just take that long on its own?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 7 жыл бұрын
The oil light (green light) is an oil pressure light for the end of the oil line. If it is on, then there is no pressure, off is no pressure. So, in the video, during the cranking and it will remain on until oil completes it cycle thru the engine. Yes, it really takes about a minute, it was very cold and carbs were dry, so yes, it takes time. Franny

I think the better option would be to remove air filters and pour fuel down the carbys .you would be overhead the leads and over loading the battery.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny Ай бұрын
That is crazy dangerous! You can have a carb fire. Too many cars lost to that. I had the starter rebuilt recently and after 60+ years was just fine. The solenoid had gone bad. So it is the switching that did it in and not the running. The battery can handle it. If you want to break it up into a couple segments you can do that but that doubles the cycles on the solenoid and that is the part that failed.

I suppose 2018, did Audi make the TT with the TDI in previous years? I was really enthused about getting a TT with the TDI and then Volkwagen/Audi messed with the EPA and it is gone , now. The performance and handling, with great fuel mileage really seemed like a winner.

Why did it take so long to start?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
After a couple/few weeks the carbs will completely dry out and the small fuel pump then has to fill both float chambers. It takes a surprising amount of time because the lobe on the distributor drive shaft the pump drives from is only on one side of the shaft. But,... In that time the engine (which has also been sitting) is getting lubricated.

Beautiful 356. I cringe with cranking that long. Better to attach a large socket to the crank pulley and slowly trigger a long handle air ratchet.

I just had breakfast with Joe Leoni... I talked about these comments and he mentioned that the biggest wear is the initial contact on the solenoid. Once the starter is running, it is fine. The car has over 120K miles and that starter is 60 years old and works just fine. If you crank on that pully nut, you will over torque it (you can't get to it anyway). Common misconception that the starter will be damaged. It is the ignition switch (initial latch current) that is bad. But, that can be solved with a relay (I did a video on that). You can add a bulb primer or an electric pump, but I feel it is better to crank cold until the engine is lubricated. I do appreciate the concern. F

and why dont you make a short brake between cranking? Is it always start at first try ore sometimes dying after start or something. Tell me that would be great:)
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 7 жыл бұрын
That is a good suggestion. The reason I stay on it is that the solenoid can pull up to 40A initially, but that drops a lot quickly so I didn't want to subject the ignition switch to that much current over and over. I just installed a starter switch relay so now I can take a brake ;) Thanks for watching!

Actually, it isn't tough on the starter at all. I was a little worried about the ignition switch, but I just did video on installing a relay for that so check that out. Even after a long start like that the starter is barely warm. It is original and still runs great after almost 60 years. Maybe other cars have weak starters, just not this car. To be fair, the manual would rather you don't run it for more than 20-30 sec or so, but without the starter relay you can do more damage to the switch with that 40A initial pull from the solenoid. The oil light will stay on for more than 30 sec and that is my biggest concern. Way easier to rebuild a starter than an engine and this engine has over 100K miles on it. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching! Franny

Thank you for posting this video. My wife and I have recently inherited her Uncle's 1963 Porsche 356B which he purchased new. I found the driver's manual which has been very helpful and a manila file folder with every receipt of service or repair and includes the original purchase contract. What I didn't receive was any instructions from her Uncle on the starting procedure. Again, thanks for posting this it has helped a lot.

I forgot to add, he had a starter button installed which will take the abuse of such a long start off of the key starter. Turn it to ignition, then press the start button. I found it by accident while pushing and prodding the functions of the various knobs and controls before I found the driver's manual in the passenger map pocket.

Hi, I am sorry to say that you are getting exactly the opposite result to your objective. An engine does not have oil pressure while cranking so, apart from excessively using the starting motor, the engine is likely suffering a premature wear. It the carbs get empty so fast is probably due to a bad sealing. But apart from that, you could install a bleeder on the line which can be easily hidden anywhere to prime them manually before cranking if you do not want to install an electric pump.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 жыл бұрын
cicli If that is true then why does the oil light go out? The oil does circulate through the engine - the pump is mechanical... All zenith carb'd 356s will be dry within two weeks. There have been several attempts to remedy that over the years, but nothing that works well. If you would like to have yours start faster, then I suggest an electrical pump.
@cicli
@cicli 6 жыл бұрын
We do not know at which pressure is set the oil light as to turn off, I recommend you plugging a pressure gauge on the pump/block if there is the option just to know the actual value. When I say that there is no pressure while crancking means not enough pressure. When the oil is cold the pressure is higher, but you also need higher pressure to get the oil into the parts. It has nothing to do a pressure of 25 psi, for example, with cold oil than with hot oil. It is just my recommendation, same as other have written on the comments. I feel that this is not a good practice.
