The high pitched singing part that Maria Franz sings is actually called Kulning which from ancient Scandinavian Nordic herding calls that women used to call in cows, sheep, and other livestock from distances. I love how Heilung incorporates history into their songs rather rituals that they perform at their concerts. I must say the best thing about Heilung is their live performances. You get to FEEL the drums and the atmosphere of the whole production. They are currently on tour and if you get a chance to see Heilung, GO SEE IT! :)

They refer to their performances as "Rituals" because there's a very spiritual component to their music and performances. And the crowd is part of it... they vocalize and join in. Heilung is an experimental folk music band made up of members from Denmark, Norway, and Germany. Their music is based on texts and runic inscriptions from Germanic peoples of the Iron Age, and Viking Age. Heilung describe their music as "amplified history from early medieval northern Europe". Their music is usually about Germanic deities, the Jǫtnar, and valkyries. "Heilung" is a German noun meaning "healing" in English. Anoana is a song they wrote based on very ancient European coins that said Anoana on them, believed to be a word meaning "protector of the land." The song tells the story of a mystical child born on the night of an Eclipse. She grows up to be the Protector and eventually merges with her beast self. I highly recommend the music video... its absolutely gorgeous and tells the story of the song.

Cool that you found Heilung!! Me and my wife were at a heilung concert in Stockholm a while ago. It was amazing. And I really like that Maria plays tagelharpa in this video. I allso play one but I focus at scandinavian melodies.

This one should be a reminder to us modern people, that we all belong to the nature. We all lived as primitiv people with diffrent Gods, Nature Gods, people worshipped nature and its animals insects and so on. They ate animals, but they prayed for the animals soul. You can find it anywhere back in the history of us human beings.

This reminds me of finding strange bands playing in the old traveller fields at Glastonbury festival back in the 80's and 90s

There's a Wikipedia page on Heilung at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heilung. In short, their music and lyrics are based on Iron Age and Viking Age themes and mythology. In other words, pre-Christian. It's a lot more primitive than what people normally think of when they think of European music, and it's part of the appeal.
