This song is based on the Norwegian Runic Poem, which, as in the Icelandic Runic Poem, names all the runes of the young futhark accompanied by a stanza alluding to the name of each of the runes. There is also a third Runic Poem: the Anglo-Saxon. Runic poems are believed to have served as a mnemonic tool for remembering the names of the runes and their order in the alphabet. It is an important compilation of popular culture of the time, comparable to old English sayings, Gnomonic poetry, and Old Norse poetry. The Norwegian runic poem, written in Old Norse, has been preserved in a 17th century copy of a destroyed 13th century manuscript. This poem appears in skaldic meter. And it has the following structure: The first line of each stanza is a phrase of the following type: "name of the rune + copula + X", where X is an attribute to the name of the rune, followed by a second rhymed line that provides some information somehow related to the previous sentence. In this poem and in Icelandic, all the runes of the young futhark appear in the same order. The names of the 16 runes and their order is as follows: Fé, Úr, Þurs, Óss, Ræið, Kaun, Hagall, Nauðr, Ís, Ár, Sól, Týr, Bjarkan, Maðr, Lögr, Ýr ᚠ - Wealth causes dispute between relatives. The wolf inhabits the forest. ᚢ - All dross comes from bad iron. Reindeer often run on frozen snow. ᚦ - A troll causes disease in women. Few men find joy in misfortune. ᚬ - The end of the river is the path for most trips. And a scabbard is the fate of swords. ᚱ - It is said that riding is the worst for the horse. Reginn forged the best sword. ᚴ - The ulcer is a curse for children. Death makes a man pale. ᚼ - Hail is the coldest grain. Kristr created the world of yesteryear. ᚾ - Anguish leaves little choice. A naked man is chilled by frost. ᛁ - Ice we call a wide bridge. A blind man needs guidance. ᛅ - Abundance is a blessing to men. I say that Fróde was generous. ᛋ - The sun is the light of the world. I bow down to all that is sacred. ᛏ - Tyr is a one-handed god. Often a blacksmith must forge. ᛒ - A birch has the greenest leaves. Loki forged times of deception. ᛘ - Man is the product of dust. Strong is the claw of a hawk. ᛚ - A waterfall is a river that falls from the mountain. All treasures are gold. ᛦ - Yew is the greenest of winter trees. It tends to crunch when burned. The ritual they perform is a possible recreation. Very little is still known about Viking culture. Archaeologists believe that 90% of the objects are still buried. Heilung work closely with archaeologists, so it is possible that this ritual may have been similar to those performed 1000 years ago in the bronze and iron ages of northern Europe. The three members of the group try with their bodies and arms to recreate the 16 runes of the ancient fhutark. The video was filmed on the site ‘Les Menhirs de Monteneuf’ in France. Very true what you said about whites not having a culture, they do, but it's buried. Indigenous cultures exist around the world are certainly not limited by ethnicity, the dominate colonizing white culture has simply strayed so far from it's roots that it has forgotten what it means to have a relationship with the land we walk upon. There are still Europeans who understand, just far far too few to change the worldview of the majority. Heilung has always been such an inspirational band, they are genuine and respectful people...they even invited our relatives to perform with them when they played at Red Rocks here on Turtle Island. One of my great regrets is having missed that ritual...Wela'lin for giving them more exposure!

I listen to them EVERY MORNING when I'm working out. I love watching peoples first reactions to them. They were the first band that resonated with my soul. If I don't start my day with them, I'm going to have a shitty day.

Everything about them is authentic. They really are a fascinating group. Their music is based off of ancient texts, relics, artifacts, runes, spells etc... You need to watch their full performance at lifa. It's a mesmerizing experience to say the least. It's hard to believe, but they sound even better live. It was their first live performance as a group too. Insanely good.

From everything I've heard from Heilung, Norupo is my favorite. Would recommend you check out Wardruna. Initial recommendations are either Wardruna and Aurora - "Helvegen" (Live) for some lovely live harmonies or "Kvitravn" music video. Both videos have English translations of the lyrics if you activate the closed captions on them.

Sápmi joik (indigenous people of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Northern Russia) sounds like native American music too. Maria plays with both joik and traditional norwegian folk tones.

This song struck a chord with me too and reminded me of Native American chanting so I went to watching some on KZfaq. I also listened to Buffy St Marie back in the 60’s and she is Cherokee. It certainly peaked my interest in the culture of ancient times. Love what Heilung are doing and especially like their video for their song Anoana.

re: American tribal rhythms. I would suggest they came over from Asia via the ice age land bridge, whilst at the same time going west into Europe from the Siberian steppe. which would explain to some extent a connection.

Up here in Canada, they're experimenting with opening up psychedelics for therapeutic use and when the topic came up on a college radio station they were talking about how the sessions often involved music alongside the guidance of a therapist. One of the questions that came up was what kind of music would be best. These guys were my first thought.

Man your really going to enjoy Darkher "Lowly Weep" that I already suggested. Heilung sounds amazing I'm definitely checking them out. I mentioned to you the other day us metalheads listen to alot of other stuff. I mainly listen to deathcore but I absolutely love this stuff, European/nordic folk hits you on a spiritual and emotional level. Keep in mind I'm from Detroit so that just shows us no matter where your from that you can really experience and enjoy music like this. Also check out Skáld "Rún" or "Ó Vallhalla" they are amazing, very viking folk feel.

The similarities in sound has more to do with what kind of instruments are available for use, AND the purpose of the music. If it is ritual in nature, the intent is to induce trance. Certain rhythms and musical frequencies aid in trance induction, so these techniques take president, hence the similarity. If music is to entertain, cultural differences are more apparent. Most tribal or clan use of music is ritual in nature, though not all.

Your comment about getting Midsomer vibes at the start: I dont know if it is the wrong culture - that similarity you're seeing is because Midsomer was drawing on a pagan history that was common across most of northern Europe. There were distinctions as the different tribes and areas developed away from each other but the similarities were strong well into the early medieval period

Well the "viking"(Danes) where the first to interact with native American and both exchanged things. Then they left. So maybe the sound is from that exchanged or maybe it's this deep primal part of us no one's sure.

You know the thing that blows my mind about this group is their mastery of the mushroom. You haven't "listened" to heilung until you've at least eaten an eighth. Their music is good, but their control of the psilocybin realm is one of the wildest things I've ever experienced.

One thing I love about Heilung is their unapologetic use of OUR ancient runes and symbols (like the Sun Wheel we see a flash of) which have been appropriated by radical right-wing and racist groups, many of which have no legitimate connection to any of the Nordic countries. It's so frustrating because they'll claim to be bringing back ideals of what they perceive as the 'vikings' but it's the complete opposite. Norse culture was pretty 'liberal' by our standards for their time and none of their violence (e.g. raids) were ever motivated by racism. They raided anywhere. There were vikings who worked as bodyguards and warriors for the emperor of Constantinople. There were black vikings (not slaves), even chiefs. I'm just so fed up of people misusing the different nordic cultures. Sorry, rant over
