"In Maidjan" is basically repitition of the 24 Character "Elder Futhark" Runes, kind of like singing your ABC's.

It would be a good way to memorize the Elder Futhark. I started studying Runic alphabets after hearing this band for the first time. Heilung also does a song "Futhark" which is "poem" featuring the 33 Characters of the Anglo Saxon Futhark but it is more in depth stating the name of the Rune and the meaning and a little related blurb for each of the 33 Anglo Saxon Runes.

Their lyrics, when translated, would seem to be bad due to machine translation but it's actually because it translates into Old English. The syntax is very different. It's a lot of older Germanic languages they're singing in. They've also been quoted in interviews as having the desire for their music to send listeners into a trance-like state. People have told them that various conditions have been lessened through listening either live or with headphones. Conditions from depression, tinitus, and more. Their name is quite literal in some respects.

That throat singing is actually a variety of vocal fry called Strohbass. It probably was used in Germanic music of the time. An Arab traveler named Ibrahim ibn Yakoub Al-Tartushi visited Hedeby in Denmark about a thousand years ago and described Norse music as " I never heard any more awful singing then the singing of the people in Schleswig. It is a growl that comes out of their throats, similar to the bark of the dogs but even more like a wild animal.”

I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 10,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and this year they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. I hope this review helps you to understand a bit the context of this musical group. I recommend this video of her concert.

I am always happy to see people enjoy Heilung. The sounds you were looking for at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="933">15:33</a> is indeed one of the samples that Christopher uses, the man at the instruments on the front left (you can see him sing about his swordsung at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="553">9:13</a>). He is one of the three core members of Heilung and is the one who handles most of the instruments, the electronics, etc. He has a great ear for sound and the specific sounds you hear in his loops are recorded by and in authentic iron age to viking age settings. They instruments like percussive rock gongs in caves (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_gong), in other songs they use the sound of an arrow hitting wood. What makes them so entrancing is that they very neatly and carefully stack layers of sounds and rhythms on top of each other, until things collide or explode. PLEASE do yourself a favor and listen to In Maidjan, it is by far my most favorite song in Lifa. That is where Maria will take you by your ears and spirit you away. To experience them live is incredible, because they treat this as a ritual and they are not pompous about it. They treat the people, the stage, each other and everything else with respect. Every show starts with burning sage and pine-oils. Then they emerge and do the Heilung prayer. Then they start and they do not stop until they leave the stage again. They don't do encores. It's really beautiful. The feeling of those many reverberating drums is like magic to your body. They currently tour with an even bigger entourage of warriors, female vocalists (Traust is magical).

you're right when you say trancy... the rhythm is supposed to be like journeying. In fact the last thing she plays on the bones (Human ones btw) is a standard journeying call-back rhythm. English lyrics What am I supposed to do if I want to talk about peace and understanding But you only understand the language of the sword What if I want to make you understand that the path you chose leads to downfall But you only understand the language of the sword What if I want to tell you to leave me and my beloved ones in peace But you only understand the language of the sword So I let the blade do the talking So my tongue shall become iron And my words the mighty roar of war Revealing my divine arrows shall strike All action for the good of all I see my reflection in your eyes But my new age has just begun The sword is soft in the fire of the furnace It hungers to be hit and wants to have a hundred sisters In the coldest state of their existence That they may dance the maddest In the morass of the red rain Beloved brother enemy I sing this song for you The lullaby of obliteration So I can wake up with a smile And bliss in my heart And bliss in my heart Coexistence, conflict, combat, devastation, regeneration, transformation That is the best I can do for you I see a grey gloom on the horizon That promises a powerful sun to rise To melt away all moons It will make the old fires of purification...purification Look like dying embers... Look like dying embers... Look like dying embers... ...

Time dilutes listening to this song. Its a shamanistic experience. It is based on a poëm found on the Eggja stone, one of the oldest runes found. I am far from fluent in protogermanic, but it is a bit like Dutch/German/English (languages that came from protogermanic), so I did my best to translate: Min warb naseu (we where near the waterline) Wilr made thaim (doing the laundry) I bormotha hauni (I was disturbed a howling) Hu war (hu war) (who was it) Hu war opkam har a hit lot (who was it that has come upon to our lands) Got nafiskr orf (got masks on) Auim suimade (making havoc) Foki afa galande (people all panic) What am I supposed to do If I want to talk about peace and understanding But you only understand the language of the sword What if I want to make you understand that the path you chose leads to downfall But you only understand the language of the sword What if I want to tell you to leave me and my beloved ones in peace But you only understand the language of the sword I let the blade do the talking So my tongue shall become iron And my words the mighty roar of war Revealing my divine anger's arrow shall strike All action for the good of all I see my reflection in your eyes But my new age has just begun The sword is soft In the fire of the furnace It hungers to be hit And wants to have a hundred sisters In the coldest state of their existence They may dance the maddest In the morass of the red rain Beloved brother enemy I sing my sword song for you The lullaby of obliteration So I can wake up with a smile And bliss in my heart And bliss in my heart And bliss in my heart Coexistence, Conflict, combat Devastation, regeneration, transformation That is the best I can do for you I see a grey gloom on the horizon That promises a powerful sun to rise To melt away all moons It will make the old fires of purification (of purification) Look like dying embers (x10) Min warb naseu (we where near the waterline) Wilr made thaim (doing the laundry) I bormotha hauni (I was disturbed by a howling) Hu war (hu war) (who was it) Hu war opkam har a hit lot (who was it that has come upon to our lands) Got nafiskr orf (got masks on) Auim suimade (making havoc) Foki afa galande (people all panic) (all who have ears! Listen to this!) (x10)

Just listen to the entire album, and keep looking up the lyrics, its awesome. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npdypq56tZrZiYE.html - Opening Ceremony (chant/prayer with band and public about Yggdrasil, the tree of life, that we are all part off) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npdypq56tZrZiYE.html95 - In Maidjan (the corruption) about creation: the gods are called to create the sun, and everything that sprouts from it. Then the Elder Futhark is chanted: the runic alphabet. Each rune both a sound humans make to communicate, a letter, as a 'concept' in itself, for example S, Sowilo, also means 'Sun', M(annaz) also means 'Man', D(agaz) also means 'day' (concept of time) etc. Then Odin is asked to look at our struggle. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npdypq56tZrZiYE.html - Alfadhirhaiti (All names that the allfather, god, has) About the things created and experienced by god through his creation. From wolf to human warriors. Who will always continue to exist, because we remember them. Then follows a list of names of 'god'. Basically: 'everything'. ('God of the hanged' is a reference to their religion, where they thought god hanged himself upside down in the tree of life, to splinter in 'life', and to experience the universe through us, so god himself, as an entity is 'dead', and only continues to live, because we remember him, we are 'gods eyes'. Jup: Its complicated) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npdypq56tZrZiYE.html390 - Carpathian Forest is a reference to the protogermanic greatest accomplishment of defense: the battle with the roman invaders in the carpathian forest: where complete legions of romans 'went in, but never came out'. The war-chants of the 'pagan' army coming from the dark woods still makes any roman shiver. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npdypq56tZrZiYE.html628 - Krigsgaldr (war chant) about what choice we are left with if someone invades our lands. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npdypq56tZrZiYE.html - Hakkerskaldyr (shield formation) Lyrics: 'Hey! Every men! Hear our voices! Listen to us now: In thy hands is death Thy people we shall slaughter And no mercy will be given Fearless we are Death makes us laugh War is what we want Thou! Dies! In this battle thou shall dies.' kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npdypq56tZrZiYE.html - Fylgija Ear / Futhorck. Fylgija Ear () : "The grave is terrible to every earl, when the fixed flesh begins, the corpse cooling, to choose the earth, paleness as its bedmate. Fruits fail, joys depart, mankind ceases to be. " first in (old) german, then in old english. This describes that both sides in war mourn exactly the same. Then, in 'Futhorck', runes are rolled, and with each rune a small story is told. Depicting all things that can happen in life, but then the 'death' rune is pulled, and its all over. Death, being as much part of life, as life. Your life can be short or long, filled with events, but in the end we all roll 'death', and thats ok. That is how it is. Without 'death' as event, there would be NO events. (this is all very religious). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npdypq56tZrZiYE.html - Othan (Odin) is a poëm about the actual fight. It begins with untranslatable warchant/spell: "Hariuha laþu laukar gakar alu ole lule laukar" then a man tells about how he started as 1 in 11, who led them in battle, he prays they go to the fight, and come back home, as a whole. But when he comes back, he is only 1 in 5. Arrows struck the rest down. And there was nothing he could do, even when he could see it happen. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npdypq56tZrZiYE.html - Hamrer Hippyer is about bringing in some prisoners: and taking revenge on them for the losses of the kinsmen. They chant: 'hang the animals' and 'blood for blood' 'a bone for a bone' 'so that wounds can heal again' Then it says: 'may this story be of any help'

Somewhat reminiscent of Indian drone music, which reminds me of a great band from Britain named Kula Shaker. They combine rock with Indian music and have very catchy pop hooks. "Govinda" is one of their catchiest "hits" and I'd recommend the live version because of the Indian guest musicians. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbl1oc-g0s_PeKc.html Kula Shaker Live Govinda. If you dig it "Tatva" official video is probably their catchiest tune.

Krigsgaldr is kinda warmagic but galdr is a form of word / sung magic. so its more like magical warsong =) your second pronounciation of heilung was near perfect and you said Krigsgaldr well. In Old norse (and mdoern icelandic) youd have to really pronounce and roll the r though for grammatical reasons

The use of English may come off as surprising, but English is a largely Germanic language, which is what Heilung specializes in. The original Aenglisc or Old English was a language spoken in Anglo-Saxon England, which seems to have included the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and Frisii: all Germanic tribes that invaded Britain, pushing many of the native Celtic Britons into modern Wales, and absorbing the rest. The Norse, another Germanic group, requently raided, settled, and invaded England during this time period, and in 1066 the Normans began their conquest of England. The Normans were Norse who had settled along what's now Northern Modern France, but were heavily influenced by Frankish, (also Germanic), and Gallo-Romance language and culture. The merger of Aenglisc and Norman French created Middle English, which gave rise to Modern English after various vowels and consonants went through restructuring after the late 14th and early 15th Century. In other words, English is a mutt of a Germanic language, mixed with a respectable dose of Celtic and Gallo-Latin, (i.e., Latin spoken by Celts from Continental Europe). As a result, there are a number of words from other Germanic languages that are recognizable to an English speaker.
