The vast amount of Docker containers are less than worthless. Though most providers give extensive directions on what commands to type for installation, most won't even tell you what the software actually does. Once installed, you are on your own. That is why this particular video was especially helpful. This was the third time trying to install Heimdall and I made it! Thanks.

Something I like about Heimdall is that it uses the Laravel framework which is php/mysql. This allows for quickly adding your own features/templates etc.

Excellent. Very clear, thanks. Maybe the only useful feature that lacks is the online/offline status check of services listed in its menu which other apps (like dashy, if I remember correctly) seem to have.

Yeah, the service APIs are super useful, but I've really settled on Dashy, and had some great replies from the Dashy author as well. Super terrific, and invested in the Dashy build!

Great video. Having a difficult time adding Heimdall (Docker install) to Nginx proxy manager on a separate host. Any tips?

So, if Heimdall is on a separate host from NPM, then make sure you're putting the Heimdall host IP into NPM, as well as the Heimdall port. If you're doing that, reach out to me on Telegram @MickInTx, or on discuss.opensourceisawesome.com and let's see what's going on.

It appears that you can not add an app that isn't on the list. I tried to add sonarr and it appears to add it (it does show in the listing) but does not show on the dashboard page

You have to tick the pinned option.

@@terraqueodev8933 Yep, if you want to set one not in the list, you keep application type as 'None', then tick the Pinned option to on, and it will show up.

I've added it to docker via docker-compose but my application list is empty. Neither have I been able to get a Certificate for it with NPM. But i've had this problem with pihole too....maybe sth to do with the fact they listen on the same port? Do you have any idea?

Can you reach Heimdall by IP and Port? If not, then it may be that it's getting a conflict with Pi-hole. You definitely cannot have two apps using the same host port (left side).

@@AwesomeOpenSource i can reach it via reverse proxy just fine. Ive got the port on 1111:80. I can add applications but not select what type it is. Neither does the ssl certificate work in nginx. Not sure why. Also when i add it to the npm Docker network, it becomes unreachable. Ill read into it more. But i still dont get why it wont work.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to edit the php.ini file in the docker instance to allow me to change the background image. Driving me absolutely bonkers. Any idea how to get around that?

you can enter the docker VM with the command docker exec -it name-of-container /bin/bash then try to locate the php.ini file, but if this is not in a mapped volume, when you update the container, or remove and re-add it, your changes will be gone. So it's best to find where the php.ini is, then map a volume to that location, and make your change in the mapped volume folder.

I think you might be able to find the configuration file that is built, but it's been so long since I looked at it, I'm not sure. It would be better to ask over on their project page.

Not that I've seen, but there are other mechanisms. I believe you can make different "boards".

You'd have to look at the Heimdall docs to see that, or check the Dockerfile...it's just a script on how it's built and installed for the containers (which is just a really lightweight VM).

Useless new tab worxs almost the same way in "new page u can create that in new tab remove the shortcuts" firefox or chrome and smaller so i can put more in app needs work, or i just use my favorite's. But great work on the open source software this one is not for me. Needs more like server ip goto new page, search does not work and there should be whoogle

I think they've had a recent new release, may have improved, but you can always make suggestions for improvement since it's open source.

People build tools like this for an international community but they don’t take the effort to make these tools in at least do U.N official languages. Nobody seems to care about Arabic. If you’re not building for everybody then you are not open source.

That's where the open source community comes in. Translation is not easy, nor an out of the box kind of thing (yet), so it takes effort and time. Keep in mind, these projects are done in spare time, by volunteers 99.9% of the time.

open source just means the license requires that source code is publicly available . That’s it. No, i’m not going to translate an app I made one weekend in my spare time into languages that I don’t even know. But I will share the source code.

@@AwesomeOpenSource Agreed. I am aware that open source is something done spare time. The community needs to organize itself to provide access to as many people as possible. However, I am seeing big companies follow the same trend. Many tools are not in Arabic. When they go eastern, they go Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese. They only look at countries that are true "allies" -Saudi Arabia being a secondary ally. I am Moroccan by the way. To sum it up: It's institutionalized.

@@majorgear1021 Agreed. Open source means just that. But I pitch it as if it's for everybody! That's wrong. Besides, I have seen big companies follow the same practice, unfortunately. When they go eastern, they have Korean, Japanese or Vietnamese, rarely Arabic. It's institutionalized.

there are hosts of tools to remove ads if they bother you, but it takes time and effort for anyone to create content, so an ad here or there helps pay for that on a non-subscription system like KZfaq.
