I know we don’t have textual enough info re: books, but it seems very GRRM-like to have the unbroken content info of a Targ-heir prophecy lost in the Dance or Summerhall with only the knowledge of a lost prophecy (and not what it contains) or just fragments (which all decay over time & Dany doesn’t know). It’d be appropriately tragic for Dany’s arc for her not to understand how dreams & confidence can turn into hubris…something Viserys could have taught her.

Something I think this show has over even season 2 or 3 of GOT is that it's SO colorful. Every scene you can tell the colors were picked intentionally, and they didn't just drop a layer of blue on everything. A lot of the time in GOT, especially in the back half, everybody just wore black and the colors were only there to tell you what team everyone was on.

thank you for calling Aemma's death a murder. I really enjoyed the framing of that scene as one in which Viserys is sorrowful but unambiguously denying his wife any agency and having her killed. The show does so well expressing the depth there; the framing shows that this is absolutely horrible, but in universe, Viserys is treated as a man making a hard choice, and the only characters with speaking roles are other men who ignore Aemma's begging. It's such a complex, terrifying scene, and it doesn't get enough recognition for pulling it all off!

@LordKeram
@LordKeram Жыл бұрын
@@josephjackson9679 There were 6 heirs before the council was called, the last of which was Viserys's father Baelon. The council was called because the king knew he would die soon and so he wanted to prevent war of succession as Rhaenys and Viserys both had a good claim for different reasons. Rhaenys was the oldest child of the oldest child, while Viserys was the oldest child of the heir. Overall he is essentially right that the choice is about gender. Even if the "modern" lens some people view it from (aka. women are not chosen solely because of oppressive patriarchy and men being bad) takes everything important and interesting from the picture.

It's just a great visual tie in. To speak as someone who (unfortunately) hasn't read fire and blood as of yet, I found the first scene of the small council to be a bit aggressive with it's fast delivery of so much information and new characters, but I think it gave me the time to really focus on on that unspoken communication of character through the actors amazing performances. From Otto's first line, to the little glare from Rhaenyra, you could really feel the appropriate tension in the room. I knew by the end of that scene the dynamics between every character. And I have to say it's been very fun to learn through videos like these the meat behind that dialogue that originally went over my head. Super excited to see where the second episode goes! He burns through his goodwill with everyone else incredibly quickly because he sucks at being subtle and utterly refuses to ever look at things from anyone's perspective other than his own, which is excellent setup for [spoilers].

With court intrigue, supposedly, having a higher % than in GoT, the effect might be even more pronounced. More incest though, but at least Rhaenyra is no longer 8 years old as in source material. ( _Inb4 Netflix buying rights from HBO_ ;) ) Seeing how source material is something akin to LOTR appendices rather than to an "honest" novel, wooden dialogues during character exposition dump (chief example being characters introduced to the viewer by being described, sometimes even whle standing in the same room...) or other liberties made by some mediocrity personified are to be expected. Imo Daemon's chuckle when he's eavesdropping on the Succession meeting is because Viserys knows him too well. Despite all the bravado and acts and swagger Daemon tries to put on, he really does love his brother and wouldn't try to hurt him, and Viserys sees that. Makes it that much more heartbreaking when Daemon is sent away.

Can I blisstake too? Africa? Brilliant choice. It works! I'm already in love with Syrax. She's so beautiful and emotive. Young Rhaenyra is everything. I kinda thought "dragon" would smell kind of like a smouldering campfire. Corlys putting his hand over his cup without so much as looking at the princess cupbearer was one hell of a chad move. My first comment about Daemon was a muttered "creepy groomer f*ck" but admittedly I'm bringing book knowledge of his relationships into this. I cringed hard when Rhaenyra tore that page out of the book. I love that you noticed Daemon's horse too. That creature is magnificent. I bawled my eyes out when Rhaenyra choked on the word dracarys, and Syrax looked so concerned for her. I'm a little uncomfortable about the prophetic dreams and the link to the dagger, but honestly that's probably because of who ultimately wields it. The only real problem I have is that they let D&D sneak in and put a fart sound in the episode.

It makes sense. Danaerys learned High Valyrian from her brother (who also probably wasn't very good at it) while they were constantly running around Essos. I assume the Targaryens here have been formally tutored in it so it comes naturally for them.

@@unc54 Dialects of Valyrian are spoken in the Free Cities (the places in Essos Dany and Viserys were probably spending the most time in) because they used to be colonies of the Valyrian Freehold. So Dany would've grown up speaking mostly Valyrian her entire life, and quite honestly it would've made more sense if she was less fluent in the common tongue of Westeros.

@@mariadaniella07 her Valerian would be vulgate in pronunciation then. Nobody speaks High Valerian in Essos. Just like how French, Spanish and Italian are derivatives of Latin amd each have their own way of pronouncing classical Latin if spoken at all. Danearys' first language would always have been Westerosi, simply because its her brothers' native tongue. And any High Valerian she first learned from him.

As someone who hasn’t read Fire and Blood I think the pacing was great, maybe some things were unclear at first but it was so refreshing to see subtle exposition and characterisation after the dragon show. Thanks for pointing out Condal’s decisions in adapting the source material, I kinda took a lot of it for granted initially, not knowing the book. I appreciate the show even more now. Also, Alicent/Rhaenyra fanfic reading stream ? Maybe?

Having never read Fire and Blood (or any of ASoIaF for that matter until very recently), I found the pacing to be mostly great. Save for a couple moments in the first small council scene, I was never lost as to what was going on, and never felt overwhelmed with information. As you said, I appreciated that they took the time to let scenes breathe, allowing the story to feel much less like the characters are simply going from plot point to plot point (unlike some other shows I know). Overall, I thought it was a very solid start to the show, and I am thoroughly invested. Also that Africa cover went extremely hard

I've read the book and the first council scene was really quick but it makes sense to not drag it too long to bore people with uncontextualised politics but enough to give each character a line of dialogue to establish their role and priorities. Remember the first council scene of GoT is also a lot to handle and most people don't pick up that Renly is the king's brother and things like that.

As someone who hasn't read Fire and blood I would describe the pacing as dense, not fast. I think I'm missing a lot of subtle stuff due to my lack of foreknowledge but I wouldn't say that's necessarily bad. I love how much meaning and subtext there is in scenes like that small council meeting

about the "heir for a day" line, in the Rogue Prince, (iirc) we get a mention that one of Harwin Strong's kids has joined the gold cloaks as a captain, and then in the next paragraph we find out the main source for the "heir for a day" line was some gold cloak captain looking to advance their position, so the connection is there. And since we hear nothing of who this captain is or if their position really was advanced, we can theorise that perhaps the intention was not what was stated. This, along with the Mellos and Otto being shady, all works well to paint the whole council as playing their game of thrones with their own little intentions and devious actions.

That's because of game of thrones ending. No one can look me straight in the face and tell me the first 4 seasons of GOT were bad because they were actually peak television that remains unmatched, The ending is what broke people everywhere around the world and ironically no one was attacking George RR Martin (The main complaint was NO WINDS OF WINTER) for his writting because he is actually a very good "gardener" writter. r/Freefolk know this, r/ASOIAF knows this, Critical drinker knows this but everyone is skeptical because after the fail with GOT we have been getting dissaster after dissaster in the form of prequels, sequels, remakes and terrible book adaptations.

I think "The king's arrival" was more connected to the King and less to a specific house. It appears several times with Joffrey and also when Tommen is crowned(who both are not Baratheons). The only scene where it's kind of connected to Robert specifically is when Joffrey kills the basterds, and it never appears in connection to Renly or the Mannis. I think it's just a majestic theme that strengthens the authority and weight the king carries. So I don't think it was intentionally alluding to Rhaenys being a Baratheon.

@@coralineschmidt1078 sry it's at their weddings, not at their coronations. So I think it's more about big ceremonies. I think Ramin did it at the beginning scene because it fitted the mood, not because it was specifically tied to 1 out of the 10 people standing there. He has done that before(using themes not because they're linked to anything in the scene but because it fits the mood), for example when Robb executes Rickard Karstark.

@@highground7761 It also appears when Dany arrives at Winterfell in season 8.
